This is the spillway from the #RiverExe into the #channel. The #engineers who designed and built it had foresight to see the future effects of #GlobalWarming, #Urbanization, changes in #CatchmentAreas and so on. It is by no means an easy task but I hazard a guess that they may have to revisit this and other flood-relief measures along the #River.

Lastly, this is the #bridge over the #RiverExe, which is a sign that my home is a mere 5 km away. A sight that is always welcome. The bridge is old but it a #cyclepath was constructed as an extension to it on the far side, which blends in very nicely with the existing #masonry.

Only a few minutes away in the car, I couldn't resist nipping down to the River Exe to see this beauty. An hour of watching it preen was good but then it flew out over the river and caught a fish, flying back over our heads to its perch. A couple of Crow tried to steal its catch but no chance!!

Sustainable Tiverton, Transition Exeter and Transition Exmouth worked together to create Friends of the River Exe (FORE), a vibrant campaign to bring everyone connected to the river together, through festival events, citizen science, conservation and more.
They were supported by a partnership grant from Transition Together seedfunding, made possible by The National Lottery Community Fund and National Lottery Players.

A morning on the east side of the River Exe, starting in the Maer Valley just outside #Exmouth where there is a small colony of Ring-necked Duck. Then onto Bowling Green Marsh for the high tide. The latter was quiet - both in terms of waders (hardly any) and peace and quiet (lots).

Part of the journey is past the #RiverExe and you can see part of a flood relief channel with a weir where sea #birds are often found resting. Today there were #gulls but other times you may see #cormorants or #shags there. Further on, the #cyclepath goes by the #ExeterCanal and it has been nice to see people still #exercising i.e. #running, #cycling or #walking by the water.
