🪨 PipeDream on the Acorn Archimedes 🛠️
A truly unique combination. We have the first ARM-based home computer, powering a bespoke OS, running software that says, "The barriers between productivity apps are a lie we tell ourselves."
This introduced so many new technologies, I had to run a check on "Where are they now?" The ARM chip's legacy is a given, but the other stuff in the stack might surprise you.

Very few things make #riscos programming less frustrating (vs time spent) than a working Ethernet card, NFS client, and a NetBSD box with Git, Diff and Vim.

Tested my light #arm #forth + ARMv2 assembler on early '90s #riscos 3.1.
Added a platform-specific dump word and few convenience stuff (comment word, simple I/O sample etc.) so i can use this Forth / assembler as a standalone RISC OS program and drop BBC BASIC reliance.
Experimented with a relocatable dictionary as well, a program pre compile the Forth assembler then outputs a dict. binary, this dictionary can be loaded / included as needed, code size barely increased.

"Works on any device".Amazing not only will it work on my PinePhone running mobian but even better it will work on my primary phone, a dumbphone with RAM counted in megabytes.
I am also looking forward to trying to use it on my Iyonix. Although I might need to upgrade to a later version of RISC OS.
At least I will not have to buy an Android or Apple device ever again.

#RISC_OS : Antoher tough piece of work for Merlin, an extended and fully multi-core VDU driver. It's working and cores can do VDU requests who are being rendered correctly on the screen.
And yes it's ugly 😂 I should find the time and make a video of the tests...

After nearly 2 years, an update to The Penultimate RISC OS Archive has been released! This includes RISC OS Select media, as well as more goodies! This update now takes up 7.9GB, so please keep in mind.

Arcology is starting to get some killer features... Yes, that's Acorn Sprite and DrawFile conversion to PNG and SVG respectively. And "browse anything browseable on the disc", which is very inadvisable for hard drives.
The input for all this was a RISC OS Zip file, disc images work too (ADF, IMG, HFE)

Today I'm paying with Risc OS on an old Raspberry Pi.
I wish modern desktops had paper like textured windows, a common title bar theme, and proper scroll bars.
Everything's so plain and bland nowadays.

"The FileSwitch module contains a special table which associates bug fixes that are needed for certain file systems. The table is associated by the file system number, and mostly covers RISC OS 2 file systems which have bugs that the later version of FileSwitch has to work around. Unfortunately, this causes problems for other file systems which reuse the numbers.
The case we found which was a problem was for IDEFS."

True absurdity is owning an Acorn A5000 with a 42.5MHz ARM3 instruction clock, 16.67MHz RAM clock, two MEMCs, 8MB RAM, Ethernet, SCSI... and hopefully later this week a Transputer Development System card.
I've benchmarked this machine. It holds its own very well against a RISC PC 600 (33MHz ARM610).
