  1. I've been buying issues of Drag-n-Drop magazine
    dragdrop.co.uk/shop.php
an online magazine covering RISC OS
And a lot of the games use the normal BBC micro keyboard keys for movement:
    Z = left, X = right, / = down, and @ = up

On a pi with an American USB keyboard, up becomes an issue... Because no shift-2 doesn't work (and would be horrible anyway)

So I sat down, read some code, tried some stuff, and the it turns out the key is ' on the modern keyboard!

    Problem solved!

  2. French PDF magazine: Mag42, issue 2

The September issue is the second edition of the French PDF magazine Mag42, which is dedicated to various alternative platforms - including not only AmigaOS but for example also MorphOS, Atari TOS/MiNT, RISC OS and Haiku, the successor to BeOS.

The current issue, in A5 format with 52 pages, costs 5.90 euros and covers the following topics, among others:

  3. Ok, results from trying SFTP tools and under Risc OS:

OpenSSH: current package version does not include SFTP. Previous version does but it fails with a message about socketpair protocol not supported.

!FTPC: just sits forever, even with the old SecureSockets module loaded.

SecureView: works but is still in alpha testing and is very fragile.

PuTTY Utils: Just sort of work without drama. CLI only though.

  4. Under RISC OS sftp is apparently available via the PuTTY tools port, !ftpc (uses the old securesockets instead of AcornSSL 😞) , And an alpha-test WIMP app called SecureView .

    I'll have to investigate further.

  5. Hacked around on RISC OS FOCAL last night.

Just realized, as this is experimental, I should have made a git branch for it ...

Added uppercase function names to the symbol table, and then a clause in the expression parser that F* as well as f* get looked up in the table.

And it works... Until it stops working. Weird.

But I'm still crazy tired and I'd had a beer... I think I missed the Ballmer Peak.

  6. Turns out vector remapping doesn't stop a .. decent number of #riscos viruses from working. Because a good chunk of them are written in BBC BASIC.

    There's a love-hate relationship going on here.

  7. Saw this in my desk drawer and thought of you @coypu #RISCOS

  8. And since the default config sets up the keyboard in mednafen by scan code but the docs don't list them:

  9. It was RISC OS night!

I was planning on playing with emulators but instead ...

Messed around with !grapevine trying to see if it can talk to Open Oscar servers. Doesn't seem likely, as it seems to lack any way to specify a server. OTOH I can't find a hard coded address either?

I have requested my old icq number from a server in Brazil, more on this when they respond.

Messed around with the email MTA, !antispam and finally got it to quit complaining about messages from 2023.

  10. Hah! I got the RISC OS port of GnGeo to work! (Neo Geo emulator)

...For the 1 Neo Geo game I ever play...

(Money Idle Exchanger, if you must know 😝)

The secret is, you must manually copy the rc file from the game dir to /gngeo in !unixhome. Then gngeo will have key bindings!

Mapping in my cheap usb gamepad so I can use it is going to be a slog for another night.

No pics, i was hacking and now I need to eat and then go to bed.

  11. This is neat: RISC OS Direct for Pi 5 — riscosdev.com/projects/risc-os

It runs RISC OS directly on top of Raspberry Pi OS, without installing it as a new OS. It has a few problems: no sound, and I can't find the quit button, but it's way less hassle than dedicating a Raspberry Pi to this quaintly weird OS.

  12. Grrr I couldn't get mednafen under RISC OS to work.

Probably because the binary dates back to 2013 and isn't ARM 7 compatible.😞

Edit: copy the rcfiles into !unixhome and then it'll work.

This is what the error "sdl is not configured for threads"apparently means....

    Edit2: spell name right

  13. Switching operating systems tonight, tonight is RISC OS night!

I paid real money for a game! It does still happen!
This is FunFysics , which is a The Incredible Machine clone, and it's a lot of fun!

  14. Some people asked about performance, so here is a video of #RISC_OS #Merlin booting (instantly) and running a graphics demo in #QEMU, Merlin is using its own software framebuffer in this demo, not yet GPU acceleration:

  15. #RISC_OS: I finally had a bit of time to upload a video with the first system boot into graphic demo for #MerlinOS It works fine on @raspberrypi 2, 3 and 4, but the video is from #QEMU which makes it easy to record both #kernel logs and Pi 2 display. Enjoy!

  16. During a long discussion about #riscos ADFS...

<philpem> ADFS L's a bit of a dog but at least S/M/L only differ by geometry. D/E/F aren't awful but the stuff SBPR bolted on to do long filenames was ... interesting.
<philpem> "chained big directories" made it clear he'd seen the Win95 LFN spec
<x> old map, new map, newer map, newest map
    <philpem> embiggened map, cromulent map
    <x> bestest map, bestest+1 map
    <philpem> type F, ... K ... bugger we crashed into L and M, guess it's N now?

  17. @CursedSilicon @armbytes @chivanet

After a quick peak down this rabbit hole it looks like aim via chivanet (based in New Mexico!) is pretty easy, no data on !grapevine working with it.

  18. @CursedSilicon
    @armbytes

Hey !grapevine msn and aim clients should be able to talk to this right?

  19. Ho ho ho, now I have a universal Acorn Replay decompressor :)
    #riscos #retrocomputing

  20. The first new Acorn Replay video in probably 20 years, and it's in Super Moving Blocks format.
Input is an MPEG4 HD video converted to YUV with ffpmeg then compressed to Replay with custom tooling.

    orig: youtube.com/watch?v=aAg3bwzSuLk

    #riscos #retrocomputing

  21. This might be the first time Acorn Replay3 has run correctly, with the Super Moving Blocks codec, since 1998.
Two bugs, see next post for details.
