Final experiment in cross cultural blending: 5g White2Tea Tale Chaser (roasted ripe puerh) and 2g Yunomi Naturalitea Superior Hojicha. Weird, I like the blends that are unevenly divided between the teas more than evenly divided blend.

Same deal, but out of curiosity increased it to a 50-50 blend of White2Tea Tale Chaser (charcoal roasted ripe puerh) and Hojicha (Yunomi NaturaliTea Superior). The nice part is I like the longer steeps more than when just brewing the Hojicha.

After a couple weeks of following the recommendations for brewing Hojicha, I decided to break the rules. This is a blend of 4g Hojicha (Japanese roasted green tea) and 2g of W2T Tale Chaser (Charcoal Roasted Ripe Puerh). Delicious.

I really enjoy Tale Chaser, a charcoal roasted ripe puerh from White2Tea, but my wife is not a fan. "Tastes like seaweed," she says, (she says that about all ripe puerh). I can detect no wet pile or off taste and don't exactly find seaweed unappealing. Different strokes...

W2T says this Brown Sugar ripe puerh biscuit was from a "long ago club shipment". Is 2019 tea shipped in 2020 really "long ago"? It is well settled into its character.

White2Tea's 2024 Jamrock Steady is, "Another one of these white2tea years in the making experiments. Aged raw Puer maocha from the mid 2010's pressed alongside light ferment small batch shou Puer than is 2-4 years old in a blend meant to mimic tea with decades of age." Easy drinking, calming energy; Jamrock Steady is an interesting experiment in puerh blending.

First real winter rainstorm of the season is a good day to get out a Shou Puerh mini from the 2021 W2T Trick or Treat Bag. Lesser Evils small batch Shou was one of my faves from the assortment.

Prosbloom is one of my favorite White2Tea skull themed labels. The tea itself is high quality, reasonable price, fresh shou puerh tea. 2021, just getting better with age.

2017 Mangjing Ripe from Farmer Leaf. A tea producer friend of farmer leaf reserved a small portion of their raw puerh maocha over several years. It was stored in fairly wet conditions in the producer's Yunnan warehouse. In 2017, they processed that accumulated maocha into a small batch of ripe puerh. It was pressed into cakes in 2019 and Farmer Leaf managed to score a few cakes in 2023.
Farmer Leaf describes the storage as wet, but the tea has no real mold/mildew notes in the flavor. I like the flavor, on the darker side, and the energy is strong, clean, and pleasant. After trying a sample, I ordered a cake.

The third tea from Peter's visit to a Taiwan tea shop is a Dayi Shou Puerh of indeterminate age. Raw Puerh is often not really prized until it has decades of age on it. Ripe Puerh was originally created to mimic the effect of decades of age, by fast aging Puerh material in warm, wet piles. Dayi is a very well known factory Puerh producer. It may not be well known, but a little age on Shou Puerh, and it loses the characteristics that many find distasteful in young ripe puerh.

2023 Predawn Dark charcoal roasted Shou Puerh mini from White2Tea. This was club selection from last spring, which, for better or for worse, has been sitting in close proximity to a Lapsun Pine Sap smoked mini. So it is a bit smokier than it should be. Always keep any pine sap smoked tea separate.

A few years back White2Tea made their Pretty Girls shou puerh available as 12g biscuit cakes. So, you can either break it in half and brew a small batch or get out a larger pot and drink all day.

Xinghai 2009 "Dragon" ripe puerh mini cake via Yunnan Sourcing. According to YS, this ripe Puerh is made from "gong ting" and "first grade" 2008 maocha. I am not 100% sure what those terms mean, but on a practical level the leaves are very small, so I kept the steeps short. Even keeping the steeps short, this tea ends up with a very zippy energy for a ripe puerh. It is an enjoyable, easy to brew tea, no bitterness, and the storage flavors are mellow and pleasant.

I found this single 2022 pretty girls Shou puerh mini, must have been a bonus with another White2Tea order last year. So I thought it would be interesting to try and compare with the 2019 version. Lighter flavor, slight astringency, less richness. I guess luggage aging puerh is a thing. Heh.

2019 Pretty Girls shou puerh mini brick from White2Tea club. I was DM'ing with White2Tea about the joys of even mildly aged shou when I remembered this little brick of Pretty Girls from 2019. I took this brick as back up tea on several trips, pre-pandemic, it's been to Wisconsin and Europe, but never cracked it. Now's the Time.

When Farmer Leaf says "Micro-Batch", they mean tiny. This "2019 Jing Mai Ripe Micro-Batch" started as only 10kg (22 Pounds) of Autumn Jing Mai raw puerh Maocha. The fermentation/oxidation is on the lighter side. It has a flavor I can't quite place, slightly caramelized sticky rice, maybe? Pleasant zippy throat/body energy.

There's a sort of convergent evolution as ripe and raw puerh age. Which is to say, a 20 year old ripe puerh is pretty similar to a well aged raw puerh. Ripe puerh starts funky and mellows with age. Raw puerh starts harsh and gets mellow and funky with age. This is a 2002 Golden Leaf Shu Pu'er from Verdant tea. It is mellowed sufficiently that it is essentially indistinguishable from a well aged raw puerh. It is a very enjoyable and long lasting cup.

At 9 years old, 2014 Red Shroom Shou Puerh from White2Tea goes back to the early days of the company. I always say raw puerh gets weirder with age and ripe puerh gets less weird. Not entirely true, but after 5 years in White2Tea storage and 4 years in my basement, Red Shroom has mellowed with age and tastes like a rich and slightly funky black tea. Another good cold weather tea.
