Jimmy Carter taught me how to fly fish.
When I was in elementary school on the south side of Atlanta, we took a field trip to the Carter Center. There's a part of the tour where they talk about how he loved fly fishing and they have a fly rod to show everyone what it's like. As the tour got to that part, we started seeing Secret Service folks. Then Jimmy Carter comes out to tell us all out fly fishing! Then he picked a few kids to come up and try, and I got to swing it around a few times. I got to shake his hand and he patted my shoulder. It was pretty amazing! So yeah, that's my story of how Jimmy Carter taught me how to fly fish.

I find myself envying Jimmy Carter. He won’t have to be here for the looming disaster the next four years, and probably beyond, will be. I wish he could somehow return to us in the prime of life so he can help us through. Then again, I can’t think of anyone else who has done more to help society in the past three decades than this man, who unbelievably most evangelical Christians don’t like, the same people who love orange man. Well done, good and faithful servant. #RIPJimmyCarter

Back in 1990, I was a reporter for a community newspaper in #SanDiego when #JimmyCarter came to town with Habitat for Humanity (they were HQ'd at a church where my paper was based). I was fortunate to cover the week-long event as he helped build homes in poor areas of southeast SD and in Tijuana (hence Milagro en la Frontera, or Miracle on the Border). While I didn’t have an opportunity to meet or interview him or Rosalyn, I will always cherish this memento. #RIPJimmyCarter
