  1. Rochester International Jazz Fest day 9.

Kneebody. Was looking forward to this one all fest and they delivered. Killer set.

Salin. Thai drummer laid down the pocket for some tidy Thai funk.

Trombone Shorty. The fest doesn't feel complete without Shorty shutting it down. Big outdoor party.

My 15th rijf in the books. Until next year...

  2. Rochester International Jazz Fest day 6.

Matt Wilson. One of my favorite discoveries from past festivals returned with a new project that centered around the Good Trouble suite, you can guess what that was about. Anyway, really great.

Jacob Joliff Band. Also did a lengthy suite, a mandolin concerto. Mixed in with some bluegrass tunes etc. That was great too.

Popped in for a taste of Rickie Lee Jones. Interesting band with Petra Haden and Mike Dillon!

  3. Rochester International Jazz Fest day 4.

Brandon Goldberg. There's just something about seeing solo piano in this room, perfect acoustics, beautiful space, grand piano. Bunch of deconstructed reconstructed show tunes, and a magnificent Monks Dream. Hopefully get back there a couple more times this week.

Also saw Mike Stern band with Dennis Chambers, Spin Cycle with Matt Pavolka on bass and a young alt country band out of Boston called Splendid Torch.

  4. Rochester International Jazz Fest day 3.

Eri Yamamoto and Bruce Barth piano duets in the pristine Hatch Hall. Stunning.

Bill Evans, pretty solid fusion with Keith Carlock blasting the drums.

Hildaland, mando and fiddle duo bridging the gap between traditional Scottish and Appalachian fiddle tunes.

Joe Locke, veteran vibist providing good contrast from Berliner yesterday.

Herb Smith Freedom Trio, a fave from the local scene.

    Boss Baritones. Meh.

  5. Rochester International Jazz Festival day two.

Brian Charrette Trio. Organ trios have kind of fallen out of favor with me but when your band is Gilad Hekselman and Ari Hoenig, damn that was some good B3'n!

Sasha Berliner Quartet. Some hot young vibraphone action!

Terrell Stafford Quintet. Featuring another A-level drummer Johnathan Blake. Whole band cooked.

Sullivan Fortner Trio. Solid piano trio loose and fun and kind of all over the place.

  6. Rochester International Jazz Festival, night one.

The Fringe. Lived in Boston for 5 years and never made it to their weekly gig and finally caught them now. Was really missing out, fantastic free flowing improv.

Hubby Jenkins. Not sure I've seen anything quite like that, stream of consciousness old time folk and blues stitched together by guitar meanderings for almost a non-stop hour.

Ekep Nkwelle. Maybe the best jazz vocal set I've seen? Woooow, chills.

  7. Rochester International Jazz Fest day 7.

Gretchen Parlato and Lionel Loueke. Absolute magic.

    Mark Giuliana. Absolute magic.

Incredible couple hours of music and home before sunset, not too bad.

  8. Rochester International Jazz Festival day 4.

Olli Hirvonen Trio sounded somewhat like if Explosions in the Sky were fronted by Pat Martino. 🚨 bad description alert 🚨 At any rate, it was freaking great.

Nychilharmonic. An 18 piece rock orchestra. It surprised me last year but knowing what to expect this time around it fell a bit flat. 🤷‍♂️

Victoria Victoria. Soul singer backed by Charlie Hunter. He keeps finding new and interesting ways to lend his talents.

  9. Rochester International Jazz Fest day 3.

Nduduzo Makhathini. High expectations greatly exceeded. One of the top sets I've ever seen at this festival. Wish I could have made it to the second set but ...

Instead I discovered Corner House. Chamber folk group from Boston, excellent playing and songwriting in the Punch Brothers/Hawktail mold.

Also caught a nonstop hour of sax and piano improv from Scots Tommy Smith and Peter Johnstone

    A very good Sunday night

  10. Rochester International Jazz Festival day 2.

A double dose of Bill Frisell. Thoroughly amazing though You Only Live Twice some peak Frisell, had a hint of Terrapin in it's repetitive furiousness.

Oddgeir Berg Trio qualifies for the yearly Nordic discovery. Fantastic piano/keys trio.

    Albino Mbie, sunny Mozambican soul.

And squeezed in too short tastes of St Paul and the Broken Bones and Joel Frahm.

    Okan. Energetic Cuban via Canada.
And tastes of Tom Guarna Trio featuring Dezron Douglas
and Chris Minh Doky featuring Randy Becker and Dennis Chambers.
