Last weekend I participated in the #riichi #mahjong tournament in Cologne, 72 players playing 9 rounds in two days. It was great to catch up with old friends and make new ones! Generally, the tournament went pretty badly for me, except the 8th round in which I got an insane result of +92.6k, which was the highest score by a long shot. So instead of ending in the bottom ranks, that single result got me, albeit barely, in the top half at 34/72 😅

@AnnaAnthro oh the horror, taking a game with 200+ years of tradition, out of its historical and contemporary context and Disneyfying it beyond recognition. That already started with *eyeroll* jokers in American rules, and now get supercharged with this crap.

We're having a club tournament today, and I'm not doing great
In the last game I went for a yakuless tenpai and missed a 2000 points chankan, because I forgot that was a thing :neofox_googly_shocked:
(It went to a draw, and I was the only one tenpai, so I ended up getting more points, but still)

Back when I started running the mahjong meetup in 2023 there were several times where only one or two other persons would come. Now we often have 5 tables running with 20 people :neofox_happy:

I needed a quick win to secure the first place, and that's exactly what I got: chiitoi nomi on North's third discard :neofox_blep:

In the third game today I was in a comfortable lead in the last round, but then the dealer ronned a haneman and got really close to me :neofox_glare:
I was planning to get a quick cheap hand, but then the dealer got a kokushi :neofox_shocked:
And then finally I got a quick cheap hand (open ittsuu nomi) finishing second, packed my set and went home :neofox_sad:

It’s my mahjiversary today. 🎉🥳 Two years ago, I played mahjong for the first time, starting with Yakuman on the original Game Boy. Since then, I’ve gotten two mahjong sets, learned three different variants, joined an in-person mahjong group, and (in riichi mahjong) gotten yakuman seven times (four different yakuman). Happy to have gotten into this game when I did. #mahjong #riichi #yakuman #mahjiversary

Just learnt about another strange Tenhou rule:
サドンデスルールは、30000点(供託未収)以上になった時点で終了、ただし親の連荘がある場合は連荘を優先する
That is, sudden death ends once a player has 30k or more, unless there was a double ron (or an exhaustive draw) with the dealer being one of the winners and the dealer not being in first place afterwards, in which case the dealer repeat takes priority :neofox_what:
(I would have finished first with 31k, but instead we continued playing and I ended last :neofox_glare: )

This weekend we hosted the Riichi Dutch Open tournament with the #Riichi #mahjong club “Niji”. Two days of fun, seeing old friends and making new ones, all over nine intense rounds of riichi with 56 players from 6 countries. I somehow managed to get into second place, while being very busy with score keeping during the breaks 🤪
Rinse and repeat in six weeks, when we host this year’s last Dutch riichi tournament- the Oranda Sai Kou, which will decide the 2025 championship.

I went downstairs to register for the championship, and got called "el último", because I happened to get the last starting number (172). That's clearly a good sign, because los últimos serán los primeros, por supuesto :neofox_cool_fingerguns:
