  1. #RepairCoaches needed for #RepairCafes in #RedHookNY

    Sunday, December 29, 2024

"Repair Café Red Hook is a neighborhood initiative that promotes repair as an alternative to tossing things out. We host a Repair Café about four times a year in the Red Hook Community Center on a Saturday (event open to the public for 3 hours). Community members can bring their broken items to fix them on the spot with the help of voluntary repairers. Repair Café Red Hook could use more handy volunteers in the area. Join us!

"Repair Café Red Hook looking for local residents with different skills who can be present as repair experts during the Repair Café meetings. We are especially looking for people who are handy with:

    * clothing / textiles * bicycles
    * electrical appliances * wooden objects
    * computers (hardware / software)
    *jewelry
    and more!

"And who enjoy sharing their knowledge with their neighbors. We’ll take as many people interested in repair as are interested in being on our list. You can reach out if you’d like to “apprentice” alongside a more experienced coach, too!

"Want to sign up as a volunteer? Send an email to [email protected] and cc [email protected] with the Subject: Repair Cafe volunteer coach. Tell us what you like to repair, your name and email, and we’ll add you to our Coach list. You’ll get an email each time a cafe is scheduled asking if it works for you to participate.

See you soon at a Repair Café!

  2. #RepairCafés breathe new life into broken household items, teach people to fix on their own

    November 20, 2024

"Twice a month in #EvanstonIllinois, volunteers sit face-to-face with people troubleshooting and diagnosing the symptoms of a beloved but broken household gadget.

"Much like a hospital for all things broken, they're trying to find a way to mend and breath new life into the item.

"The Evanston Repair Café is held every fourth Tuesday and every first Saturday at the Robert Crown Center.

"'The most popular item is our lamps, people always have broken lamps,' said Anne Opila, a co-coordinator of the cafe. 'In the summer, we'll have a lot of fans, we get toasters, we get clocks, we get vacuum cleaners.'

"There are more than 3,000 similar Repair Cafés around the world, with a mission to reduce waste, promote community, and preserve traditional repair skills.

"'Patrons come in and they work together to repair their item. It prevents us from throwing things away that fills up our landfills so that we can continue to use them, and they go on to live a happy life,' said Opila.

"Known as a volunteer #RepairCoach, John Martin is a retired maintenance mechanic working in the general repair section of the café.

"'People are not aware that they can fix things, they figure, the philosophy in this country is buy, buy, buy, if it's not working get rid of it,' explained Martin.

"But with a little help from a handy neighbor or a retired and skilled volunteer almost anything can be fixed.

"'What we're doing here is trying to encourage people to fix stuff themselves and give them the skills and knowledge to be able to not only do it themselves and maybe pass it on to somebody,' said Martin.

"'I have this Smeg toaster, and I dropped it,' explained customer Coco Colin. 'It's such a nice piece I don't just want to throw it away.'

"Beyond general repair, they also have #sewing coaches to help #mend or #hem clothing.

"'On Saturdays, which is our busier day we also have #JewelryRepair, #KnifeSharpening, plant advice, paper conservation, musical instrument advice. So we really bring in all the skills that people are willing to volunteer for and then people can take advantage, they're all free and all available,' said Opila.

'"It's like a mission because there's so many things need to be done for the environment this some little thing i can do,' said Martine."

  3. #Maine #RightToRepair Law Poised to Remain in Flux Even After January 2025 Effective Date

    December 19, 2024

"The Automotive Right to Repair Working Group convened by the Maine Attorney General will review proposed legislation that would substantially amend provisions of the Maine Right to Repair Law concerning access to mechanical data from #telematics-equipped vehicles. Meanwhile, it appears provisions of the law requiring manufacturers of vehicles that 'use a telematics system” to comply with standards imposed by an “independent entity' designated by the Attorney General will take effect on January 5, 2025, even though neither the 'independent entity' nor standards for telematics systems will exist by that date.

"In November 2023, Maine voters approved a ballot initiative to require that, within one year of the effective date, vehicles using a telematics system sold in that state be equipped with an interoperable, standardized, and owner-authorized access platform across all of the manufacturer's makes and models. The statute requires that this platform be able to 'securely communicate' all 'mechanical data' emanating from the vehicle; make this data 'directly accessible' by the vehicle owner through a mobile-based application; and, upon authorization of the vehicle owner, 'all mechanical data must be directly accessible by an independent repair facility.' The statute gives vehicle owners and independent repair facilities denied access to mechanical data a private right of action to recover treble damages or $10,000, whichever is greater.

"The ballot initiative further requires the Attorney General to designate an 'independent entity' to 'establish and administer' access to vehicle-generated data that is transmitted by a 'standardized access platform.' The 'independent entity' is empowered to refer violations to the Attorney General, who in turn can 'institute an action' to 'enforce' the law, although no remedy for such a violation is defined in the statute. The requirements for telematics-equipped vehicles are supposed to take effect January 5, 2025—one year after the effective date of the ballot initiative—but to date the Maine Attorney General has not designated an 'independent entity' to develop standards or otherwise regulate data access platforms."

  4. U.S. Senators Call Out #AutomotiveExecs for Opposing #RightToRepair

Story by Beverly Braga, December 21, 2024

"The rich get richer, except this time Big Government is fighting for the little guy. Yes, you read that correctly and, no, it makes no sense to me either. Apparently, the exception is right-to-repair laws which are being pushed by—wait for it—a #bipartisan effort that is literally scolding #automakers to quit gatekeeping everything and give consumers access to parts, services, and their own personal vehicle data."

  5. What Are #RepairCafes & How They Can Protect The Planet

    January 26, 2022

"We live in a throwaway society, one which creates vast amounts of waste while using up valuable resources for mass manufacturing. This can lead many to start reducing their waste on an individual level, in particular moving away from #plastic, but did you know there are also vital community-run initiatives that can make a huge difference to our global waste problem?

"Alongside #LibrariesOfThings, which reduce consumption, there are also repair cafes, which help items last longer. Here’s why they’re vital to a sustainable future.

    "What is a Repair Cafe?

"Repair cafes are free meeting places where people come together to fix things. Unofficial community repair groups have likely been around for a long time, but the model as we now know it was created by #MartinePostma. Postma organised the very first repair cafe in Amsterdam in October 2009, which was a resounding success. She then founded the Repair Cafe Foundation in 2011, a non-profit providing professional support to local groups wanting to start repair cafes. There are now over 2000 repair cafes in over 35 countries around the world.

"In a repair cafe you can usually find tools and materials needed to fix items such as electrics, clothes, bikes, furniture, and more. You can also find expert volunteers, with repair skills in different areas, to help you. Most repair cafes also teach essential mending skills such as sewing buttons, fixing zips, and wiring plugs, helping people learn something by watching and working with volunteers.

"Repair cafes focus on making things last, saving people money and helping the environment by reducing consumption, manufacture, and use of raw materials."

  6. #RepairCafes Are the Beating Heart of the #RightToRepair Movement

"To date, our #DareToRepair Cafes in #BuffaloNY have led to the repair of more than 800 items, 7,554 pounds diverted from #landfills, and more than $40,000 in savings for community members."

    by Darren Cotton
    Published on Mar 20, 2024

"While such right-to-repair legislation is crucial to broader systemic change, it’s the patchwork of local repair movements independently popping up — in New York state and across the country — that is changing hearts and minds when it comes to waste and giving us hope that a different world is possible."
