  1. We close our “Actions for environmental justice from autonomous and community-based technological infrastructures” campaign: 🍀

📴 It's not just about being “always connected,” but about reconnecting with other times, with other values; turning off is also a right.

  2. My boss wants me to be able to pick up the phone within a couple minutes and respond within 30 minutes for 1 week in 7. From my euro background, if my boss tells me to have my phone on me my laptop around, he's telling me what to do, and has to pay me. But AB/ON laws looks at it differently.

IT folks of Canada, how does this work for you? Would you accept not being able to go on hikes or see music performances etc for one day in seven?

  3. Australia has introduced a "right to disconnect" law, empowering employees to ignore work-related emails, texts, and calls after office hours without fear of penalty. This law aims to protect personal time, especially as work increasingly encroaches on private life through digital technology.

  4. Australia joins France and Germany in enacting a right to disconnect law which allows employees not to respond to employer requests outside of working hours, if they choose to do so. #RightToDisconnect reuters.com/world/asia-pacific

  5. I wrote about why the Government’s Right To Switch Off is an enlightened move to aid a generation that’s borne the brunt of connectivity’s land grab - and canny politics.

(And why reactionary old fart columnists and old guard bosses need to get off Gen Z’s damn back all round, really.)

  6. #unionized industries like health care & airlines would likely be the least affected, since their working hrs are hashed out at the bargaining table in many cases. #AB2751 specifically allows #CollectiveBargaining agreements to take precedence over #RightToDisconnect protections.

Other industries w/less #union penetration, such as #tech, would likely see clearer rules ahead of time e.g. like when #coders would be required to pull all-nighters to ship the latest update.

  7. …“We’re simply saying there should be #consent around when (people) are working & not,” Haney said. “Not an expectation of 24/7 availability in a contract that they have not agreed to, & that gives people no time where they can expect to be not working.”

Countries including France, Australia, Argentina, Italy & others have passed #laws to safeguard #employees’ personal #time.

  8. #BigTech pushes back on proposed #California bill giving workers the ‘#RightToDisconnect’ after hours

A new bill from #SanFrancisco Assembly Member #MattHaney would clearly outline when companies can communicate w/their #employees during off hrs, following other countries that have passed “right to disconnect” #laws.

  9. Australia finally gets #RightToDisconnect laws to stop bosses and businesses contacting employees outside work hours. One guess who are super mad and having a big sooky tantrum over this change. Also the opposition have vowed to repeal the change. The same opposition that only a week ago vowed to **increase** the tax for 14.3 million Australians by reversing a cut we all just got.
