The history of this bill is grotesque. Promoted by middle-class luvvies with little apparent awareness of the vulnerability of poor and/or disabled people, it has tackled the problem back-to-front, tacking safeguards onto an inadequate structure.
The failure of Leadbeater's bill gives England+Wales a chance to do this properly: well-funded research and public consultatation, supervised by a #CitizensAssembly to ask whether and how #righttodie can be exercised while protecting against coercion.

CW: CW - Talk of euthanasia
I'm not suicidal. But if I were faced with something debilitating, I would like to have the choice of euthanasia when I want. I know, I know... That can be so abused by evil and greedy people. But damn! I'd rather go into the woods and become food for the denizens there (preferably freezing to death) than suffer needlessly...

@WhisperingHek Oh great! #LogansRun! But on the other hand, compassionate #RightToDie laws wouldn't suck. I'd rather become compost than end up in a nursing home!

My mum was offered an abortion when she was pregnant with me…she had contracted rubella in the early stages. She chose not to accept, but welcomed the right to choose for herself.
My Nanna died in agony in a poorly staffed NHS hospital. She told me she wanted to be allowed to die peacefully and at home at a time of her own choosing. She was denied her choice.
Our views on #Abortion and #RightToDie are shaped by our lived experience and that of our loved ones.
We should be allowed to choose.

Some people may think that Kim Leadbeater and Tonia Antoniazzi have somehow subverted the UK political and legislative system.
I absolutely disagree.
Their determination, tenacity and belief have allowed these absolutely critical issues of #RightToDie and #Abortion to be voted on by our political representatives.
When the Labour leadership looks to their legacy at the next general election, I strongly suspect they will try and claim these momentous legislative changes as their own.

The #RightToDie and having autonomy over our own bodies with access to safe #Abortion are signs of societal progress.
We are allowing individuals to make the hardest decisions they will have to make.
For too long we have allowed religious dogma to reign and constrain.
The progress made this week in the UK wasn’t brought about by the patriarchy, the financial elite or our political leaders.
It was two female backbench #Labour MPs using the power of an amendment and a private member’s bill.

France's National Assembly backs 'assisted dying' bill.
France's contentious right-to-die bill has been approved by the National Assembly in its first reading, putting it on a path that could see patients being granted the right to die with medical assistance.
Lawmakers voted in favor of the bill by a vote of 305 to 199, marking a key legislative step. The bill will now head to the Senate for further debate.

The Alberta government has launched a public survey on MAID. Although this is a Canadian law, once again the Alberta govt is trying to stick it's hands where they don't belong. In case you receive the survey, here is some knowledge regarding right to die in Canada. https://www.dyingwithdignity.ca/end-of-life-support/get-the-facts-on-maid/

This is wonderful. I'm glad it exists, and I hope at some point it'll be available everywhere and to everyone who wants it, whenever.

People have the right to control their own bodies, and that includes the option to choose to die in a civilized manner. There is no justification for the government to set any controls or limits. My body, my choice. #freedom #RightToDie #HumanRights #dignity

If you're not sure what you think about assisted dying, then I urge you to read this piece by Charlotte Raven; its heartbreaking but rightly points out some of the difficulties in the argument objecting to a #righttodie!
If you only read one thing today, make it this.... its not an easy read, but very necessary!
