  2. #AccessNow has now publicly confirmed that they also believe the Chinese government pressured #Zambia into censoring #RightsCon 2026 because of participants from #Taiwan.

The statement of what happened is a testament of how strong the influence of authoritarians has become and how the global #DigitalRights community is a target.

  3. It seems #RightsCon 2026 organizers were pressured to exclude specific participants and topics:

»The statement, although seemingly an invitation to negotiate, still lacked any concrete information as to why the government decided to announce they were postponing RightsCon.

What the government wanted from us in order to lift the postponement was conveyed to us informally from multiple sources: in order for RightsCon to continue, we would have to moderate specific topics and exclude communities at risk, including our Taiwanese participants, from in-person and online participation.«

  10. This is absolutely wild: The #Zambia government has just cancelled the world's most important digital rights conference #RightsCon 2026 which was supposed to start next week in #Lusaka. 3,000+ participants are now hanging in limbo (myself included), some already traveled to the country.

I feel for the folks at #AccessNow who have been working so hard on this for months.

  13. 🌍✈️ When I balance #ConferenceTravel with #PlanetCare:

I think about the carbon footprint of my flights. 🛫

I embrace virtual participation options! 🖥️
If I fly, I opt for carbon offsets. 🌳

Events like #RightsCon and #IJF, which bring many people together, are optimal.

I choose direct flights & fly economy always. 💺

On the ground, I pick sustainable transportation. 🚲🚃

I keep our planet in mind as I connect, learn, and grow. I'm making conscious choices! 💡
