#Ocean #rift zone saw spreading happen in a sudden burst
The crust expands at mid-ocean #rifts. But how?
In 2024, a team of French scientists was able to remotely monitor a major event on the border between the Australian and Antarctic plates, only two months after they installed equipment on the ocean floor. Their data shows that most of the spreading occurred in a relatively short time window, and some key events happened without any obvious seismic activity.

Attention Palladium and Rifts fans in the Madison, Wisconsin area, the east side HPB has over a dozen of their softcovers in good condition and relatively cheap. Somebody sold their entire collection!

I still have a fondness for Palladium RPGs, but I mostly only collect them these days using the annual holiday bundle. I’m unlikely to actually use the system, but they are fun books to mine for ideas.
I got the two Rifts China books, and two fantasy books, Balgor Wastes and Eastern Kingdoms.
It does make me think about what system I would use if I were to run something in the setting.

From a conversation on discord, I always kinda wondered why Palladium RPGs don’t have a retro clone, but I think the answer is: it’s never been out of print (TMNT and Robotech licenses excepted).
I actually played more Palladium Fantasy than AD&D when I was young.
But Kevin is still putting out the same games 40 years later.

NEMA troops have mobilized, and the USA-G10 Chromium Guardsmen and Silver Eagle SAMAS power armors are deployed by the thousands to try to restore order to the chaos. They are trained in combat, riot control, rescue, and humanitarian operations.

The brightest day in the warmest places only reaches 60-70 degrees, and the sun is barely visible through the volcanic ash and grey skies. Forests, jungles, and crops wither away. The only good news is that the volcanic ash, which is now up to 15 feet deep in the western half of North America and 2-3 feet deep elsewhere, has buried the millions of dead and prevented serious outbreaks of disease and decay.

December 31st, 2098 - Day Ten
The world has ended. Worldwide communications have completely collapsed - in some cases even city blocks are cut off from their neighbors. Across the globe, temperatures have dropped by 30-40 degrees, plunging the world into a deep winter.

After a few days of numbed pain and disbelief, the space community suffers its own bout of panic and hysteria. Thousands take their own lives and cause disaster before some measure of hope and order are restored.

December 25th, 2098 - Day Four
Nobody celebrates Christmas. At 7:53 AM, the last direct communication from Earth is received by the colonists in space. It is a garbled message that reports continuing disasters, panic, and “extreme chaos”. The planet is completely cloaked by the spreading ash, storms, and strange disturbances. The Earth is, for all intents and purposes, gone.

December 24th, 2098 - Day Three
The West Coast continues to be wracked with earthquakes and tidal waves, and is already buried under a blanket of ash over seven feet deep. Estimates suggest that one third of the world's population has been lost, and computer models estimate 30-40% more will perish, worldwide, within the next 6 months.

At 9:45 PM, the Yellowstone super-volcano erupts. The magma pool rockets twenty miles into the stratosphere. NORAD is destroyed. Sulfur fills the air and rock, lava, and ash rain down across North America, from southwest Canada and the Pacific Coast to Nebraska. Ash darkens the sky, and temperatures plummet 30 degrees worldwide.
