  1. Booker Ervin, The Freedom Book, 1964 on Prestige

Sixth full-length with Ervin as leader, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1963, for Prestige. Ervin is joined here by Jaki Byard (piano), Richard Davis (bass), and Alan Dawson (who was a drum instructor at Berklee in Boston) (drums).

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2023 Analogue Productions / Craft Recordings reissue, in the Prestige Stereo Series. It was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed at QRP on 180g vinyl.

  2. Stan Getz & Bill Evans, Previously Unreleased Recordings, 1974 on Verve

Sometimes just referred to as Stan Getz & Bill Evans, this was recorded in 1964 but not released until 1974. Ron Carter (A side) and Richard Davis (B side) on bass, with Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs NJ and produced by Creed Taylor.

There’s a whole series of “Previously Unreleased Recordings” advertised on the rear jacket. Beautiful sounding LP well packaged.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is of the 2024 UMG/UMe reissue, overseen by Chad Kassem from Acoustic Sounds.

  5. Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue

Hutcherson is the band leader here, on his first released (but 2nd recorded) solo album, but the pieces are all by Andrew Hill and Joe Chambers.

Then again, these works are *highly* improvisational post-bop. Hutcherson, Hill and Chambers are joined by Sam Rivers on tenor sax, Richard Davis on bass and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet.

  6. Clifford Jordan - "In The World" (1972)

This is the Japanese P-Vine 45rpm 2xlp reissue of Clifford Jordan's classic, originally issued as part of Strata East's Dolphy series. What an incredible lineup of musicians.

  7. Jazz - May, 1966 - Richard Davis

    RIP Richard Davis (April 15, 1930 – September 6, 2023)

  8. RIP Richard Davis. Of course I knew of his major role with Eric Dolphy and Andrew Hill but his connection to Van Morrison was new to me.

    Nice orbituary (in Dutch):

  9. Bassist Richard Davis (April 15, 1930 – September 6, 2023), whose credits include Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch!, Andrew Hill's Point of Departure, and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. #RichardDavis #RIP #jazz #EricDolphy #AndrewHill #VanMorrison #musician
