Finally found some time to bring my #NeoPixel Heart PCBs into a usable state and add some documentation. The #sourcecode is hosted on @Codeberg at https://codeberg.org/rommudoh/NoisyMcHeart and works for both variants (big and small).
I think I'll publish the #KiCad files soon, too.
Thanks to #platformio I can use the same code for both hardware variants.

Weekly output: NextGen Acela, Evernote V11, Verizon CEOs, RGB LED, screen time, Cranky Dorkfest, Verizon buys Starry, AT&T standalone 5G, TiVo DVRs
This week will have me crossing a state off my states-visited list for the first time since 2009–Wisconsin, where Oshkosh Corp. is hosting a press day to show off its government and industrial vehicles, including the U.S. Postal Service’s new and behind-schedule duckface trucks. I don’t have a good explanation for why I had not set foot in that state sooner and can only apologize to America’s Dairyland for the extended oversight.
10/6/2025: Amtrak’s new Acela trains can’t keep up with high-speed rail, Fast Company
After taking the new trains to and from New York at the end of August, I had ambitions of writing this story much faster than I did–sort of like how Amtrak had ambitions of getting the new train into service much sooner than it did. But getting the level of detail that I wanted about the railroad’s plans to upgrade the power infrastructure along the Northeast Corridor took more time than I expected.
(I included the full text of Amtrak’s detailed explanation of its plans to improve the catenary along the NEC in the commentary-enhanced version of this post that I published early on Patreon.)
10/6/2025: Major Evernote Update Taps AI for Search and Transcription, But Not Writing, PCMag
I had about an hour Friday to quiz Evernote product lead Federico Simionato about Bending Spoons’ plans for the note-taking app that it bought in 2023, and which I’ve used since 2010–so of course I took notes in my Mac’s copy of Evernote while using the Android app to record our conversation for subsequent AI transcription.
10/6/2025: Verizon Hot-Swaps Current CEO for Ex-PayPal Boss, PCMag
I don’t usually cover C-suite departures and arrivals, but I had some free time. And Verizon’s new chief executive Dan Schulman has a sufficiently interesting backstory–see the New York Times’ interview of him in 2008–that I told my editors I could pick up this item.
10/7/2025: RGB LED Is Getting Its Time in the Spotlight. Will TV Shoppers Tune In?, PCMag
I started writing this post at IFA–the first version had a Berlin dateline. But then I got sufficiently sidetracked and got in enough reporting after that tech trade show for the piece to evolve from an event recap to a broader assessment of a tech development.
10/8/2025: It’s Not Just You: Parents Everywhere Struggle to Set Screen-Time Boundaries, PCMag
Pew’s data about the level of technology use respondents to its survey allowed among kids 12 years old or younger made me feel slightly better about my own attempts at digital parenting.
10/8/2025: What happens when online plane enthusiasts meet up IRL?, Fast Company
This recap of Cranky Dorkfest 2025 was easily the most fun that I’ve had with a story since the last time I went to Florida to see a space launch.
10/8/2025: Verizon to Buy Wireless Broadband Pioneer Starry, Fold It Into Its Home Internet Service, PCMag
Writing this sent me back a ways–both to writing about Starry in its early days, including a December 2017 feature for Yahoo Finance, but also to covering Starry founder Chet Kanojia’s previous venture, the local-TV-streaming service Aereo that the Supreme Court put out of business in a dubious 2014 opinion.
10/9/2025: AT&T Switches on Standalone 5G Nationwide, Unlocking Future Network Slice Services, PCMag
This post also covers Verizon’s advances in standalone 5G, about which that carrier has been quieter than AT&T and T-Mobile.
10/9/2025: Time’s Up for a Timeshifting Trailblazer: TiVo Discontinues Its Standalone DVRs, PCMag
I would have written this much faster if I didn’t get sucked down a rabbit hole of old TiVo posts and reviews, followed by my checking my own TiVo purchase history.

This thing had so many iterations that I barely recognize it anymore. But it is almost done! A night lamp turned smart card reader, turned to a smart speaker (with light), turned to an RFID jukebox, turned back to just a lamp with a card reader (RFID jukebox going to be software-defined).

Sooo … I ditched the logic analyzer and pulled out my scope and … I'm afraid I have to peel off that label again.
Because I don't know if that looks like #WS2812 to you, but it sure doesn't to me. Apparently there's a short pulse, followed by a another pulse that's either short or long. I guess that's the binary encoding.
I'm open to suggestions which #LED protocol that is.
Alt text has some more details and timings.

Strange electronic devices that you have partially reverse engineered should have a label explaining why they are strange electronic devices and what you have reverse engineered.

Demo of the 1" (25.4mm) Fibonacci128 #RGBLED in a #3dPrinted case, showing off the touch pad animations and Color Palette Waves pattern. It includes dozens of color palettes and the pattern is procedurally animated to last hours before repeating. The code is open source and easily hackable, runs on @adafruit QT Py SAMD21.

Is it possible to fit 16x16 font glyphs into a TV head?
As soon as I saw that these existed I knew it was something I had to try with my extension of GNU Unifont (called UnifontEX), which even has emoji. Unifont and UnifontEX are both 8x16 for anything that can reasonably fit, and 16x16 for anything that can't. I know that people have gone to 15x18 or 15x20, but some glyphs do truly require the full 16x16 cell size, so 16x18 or 16x18 would have to be the case. I'm of course wanting Unicode support (including characters above Plane 0, of which there are many in the font), so that means I'd likely need a Raspberry Pi. I'm also curious which of the formats at http://stgiga.github.io/UnifontEX/ would be best. There are a lot to choose from, including ones that were never offered by upstream Unifont.
I for the past while and especially recently had wanted to wear UnifontEX glyph displays either on my shirt or then a hat, so I could speak my more passionate topics without having to worry about voice level causing me problems.
I also had for the past week felt like I wanted to, if I gave a tech talk or ever appeared in a video, to never show my face and instead hide in a fursuit head, but if I trick one of these out with cat ears, then that would do. The Raspberry Pi could theoretically let me use it as a MIDI player, obviously at safe volumes.
Like, this TV head is something I'd actually want to do, and I'd sorta been thinking about adjacent topics recently. As an Earthbound reference, I would name mine "Lumine", after Lumine Hall from Earthbound. I'd go for a green shell for them and I'd predominantly use green or RGB colors for the text.
Interesting idea: put fursuit fur (or scales if you are a scalie) onto a TV head.
Fursuit head or TV head?
"Why not both?"
Obviously this will all be several years in the future due to my current state of nonemployment. Nonetheless I'm still curious. Also, if any of these ideas are inspirational, I give full permission to use them. Same for the font. I really don't care too much about what people do with my content.
In other news: UnifontEX got used in the game Gem Frenzy (https://theyippies.itch.io/gem-frenzy), and I got credited in the Itch.io game description.
Also my birthday is at the end of the month. #unicode #furry #fursuithead #tvhead #unifontex #rgbled #rgbleds #rgb #font #pixelfonts #pixelfont #unifont #raspberypi #raspberrypipico #luminehall #earthbound #16x16px #indiegame #birthdaysoon #tech #technology #techtalk #techtalks #leddisplay #displays #leddisplays #shirtdisplay #hatdisplay #scalie #scales #furry #indiedevs #catears #midi -
Hey fellow Neopixel/WS2812 fans: know of any in-production versions of smaller LED rings using 3535- or 2020-sized WS2812/SK6812 LEDs? (as opposed to the standard 5050 sizes most rings use) Seems like it’d be a great solution for putting around pots/encoders. I can’t find any on Ali
