Gender in emergencies: a new peer learning programme from The Geneva Learning Foundation

This is a critical moment for work on gender in emergencies.

Across the humanitarian sector, we are witnessing a coordinated backlash.

Decades of progress are threatened by targeted funding cuts, the erasure of essential research and tools, and a political climate that seeks to silence our work.

Many dedicated practitioners feel isolated and that their work is being devalued.

This is not a time for silence.

It is a time for solidarity and for finding resilient ways to sustain our practice.

In this spirit, The Geneva Learning Foundation is pleased to announce the new Certificate peer learning programme for gender in emergencies.

We offer this programme to build upon the decades of vital work by countless practitioners and activists, seeing our role as one of contribution to the collective effort of all who continue to champion gender equality in emergencies.

Our approach: A programme built from the ground up

This programme was built from scratch with a distinct philosophy.

We did not start with a pre-packaged curriculum.

Instead, we turned to two foundational sources of knowledge.

First, we listened to the most valuable resource we have: the firsthand experiences of thousands of practitioners in our global network. Their stories of what truly happens on the front lines—what works, what fails, and why—form the living heart of this programme.
Second, we grounded our approach in the deep insights of intersectional, decolonial, and feminist scholarship. These perspectives challenge us to move beyond technical fixes and to analyze the systems of power that create gender inequality in the first place.

This unique origin means our programme is a dynamic space co-created with and for practitioners who are serious about transformative change.

Gender in emergencies: Gender through an intersectional lens

Our focus is squarely on gender in emergencies.

We start with gender analysis because it is a fundamental tool for effective humanitarian action.

However, we use an intersectional lens.

We recognize that a person’s experience is shaped not by gender alone, but by how their gender compounds with their age, disability, ethnicity, and other aspects of their identity.

This lens does not replace gender analysis.

It makes it stronger.

It allows us to see how power works differently for different women, men, girls, and boys, and helps us to design solutions that do not inadvertently leave behind the people marginalized by something other than their gender.

Gender in emergencies requires learning at the speed of crisis

Humanitarian response must be rapid, and so must our learning.

A slow, top-down training model cannot keep pace with the reality of a crisis.

The Geneva Learning Foundation’s Impact Accelerator is a peer learning-to-action model built for the speed and complexity of humanitarian settings.

It is a ‘learn-by-doing’ experience where your frontline experience is the textbook.

The model is designed to quickly turn your individual insights into collective knowledge and practical action.

You analyze a real challenge from your work, share it with a small group of global peers, and use their feedback to build a concrete plan.

This process accelerates the development of context-specific solutions that are grounded in reality, not just theory.

I mean politically speaking, I don't think Judd Legum (and the other writers on his website) and I would necessarily agree on all that much - I'm an anti-capitalist, they're reformers; I must however confess that if more mainstream "liberal" media sources kept their eye on the ball and made a point of highlighting who is paying for all this fascism, like the folks at Popular Information do, I don't think we've be in the horrible political situation and the terrifyingly reactionary social climate, that we presently find ourselves in.

This piece is about the impending North Carolina gubernatorial campaign of Republican Mark Robinson, a man I have absolutely zero problems calling an freakjob fascist conspiracy theorist, as well as a clear and present danger to everyone in his state who isn't already a fascist. He's an openly homophobic anti-LGBTQ hatemonger, a casual antisemite, a dabbler in Holocaust denial, a dangerous Christian fundamentalist, a climate science denier, a "Birther," a defender of high profile rapists, and a guy who has publicly stated he's trying to rewind politics to a time where women weren't allowed to vote. I'm not exaggerating; if anything, this brief summary doesn't really cover how absolutely odious and malignant his political positions are. You can read more about the specifics by clicking on the piece - but in the meantime, just trust me, this dude is a raving nazi and that's not just *my* opinion as a "far left" antifascist.

He is also a candidate being covertly supported, to the tune of perhaps millions of dollars, by some of the most recognizable corporations in America. Which corporations? How about major market players like Microsoft, Alphabet/Google, Pfizer, Amazon, Coca-Cola and Doordash, among many, many others. How are they keeping these donations hidden? By funding the Republican Governors Association, a Washington D.C. based, tax-exempt political propaganda shop whose primary goal is "to help elect and support Republican governors" - which, at a time when the GOP has gone full fascist, means the purpose of this organization is to get fascists elected and keep them in power.

Now you might think I'm being uncharitable here, or smearing the RGA and its mainstream corporate donors with a "guilt by association" attack, but as this PI article notes, the RGA immediately endorsed Robinson after his GOP primary contest win, and is already producing propaganda to attack his opponent in the next election. This "respectable Republican" political f*ckery shop, knows exactly who Mark Robinson is and they don't give a damn; and neither, clearly do their donors - did you attend the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last year? Because if so, you might be indirectly helping a hatemongering nazi conspiracy theorist seize political power in North Carolina. Indeed, as the authors note, the entire purpose of an organization like the Republican Governors Association is to allow corporations and rich people to "support candidates like Robinson — who may soon be a powerful elected official — without the scrutiny that comes with a direct contribution."

The plain and simple truth is that street nazis, parking lot bigots, and goose-stepping class traitors simply do not have the means, or the power, to bring fascism to America. The fascist project to seize control in this country is a well-funded, politically-supported endeavor being normalized, financed, and promoted by wealthy individuals and the corporations they control. The people most responsible for bringing fascism to your life aren't red cap-wearing chuds in Trump-themed t-shirts; they dress in impeccably tailored suits, and have entire walls full of degrees from respected American universities. And I'm sorry to say, the mainstream media as a whole, has no interest in telling you that because at the end of the day their class sympathies and support for capitalism, take precedence over everything else - including, and perhaps especially, telling you who is really enabling the fascist takeover of American society that threatens us all. After all, nobody likes to rat on their friends.

#ripgrepall is a #grep for everything.

#rga performs regex searches on many different container filetypes, including #PDF, #zip, #tar, #SQLite, and #docx. rga uses #ripgrep for searching, which makes searches extremely fast, allowing it to outperform #pdfgrep in speed (some matches are missed, however). rga performs caching for faster repeat searches.
