I woke up around 3:30 AM and haven’t been able to stop thinking about the #Idaho challenge to #SameSexMarriage. I’m beyond angry. I’m furious and outraged. It won’t take long for that legal challenge to reach the #SupremeCourt and for the #GOP to overturn #RFMA and then we’re back where we started. I knew this would happen and this is one moment where I hate that I’m right.

My niece, who's trans, can marry anyone she wants now. The Federal government is guaranteeing that with The Respect For Marriage Act #RFMA. States might still fight it, but now there's nothing to stop her. Her grandparents couldn't have believed this would happen in their lifetimes. Their marriage was not possible in some states when they were young.

My grandmother never saw her father again because of racist laws. She was deported to the U.S. with her mother while her father was forced to stay in Canada. The racist laws wanted to put them on a reserve, but they were mixed. Added to that were the U.S. laws on who was allowed to marry who; it drove them crazy not to know Metis people's blood quanta, so they could remove their marriage from the equation.

The #RFMA could have kept my family together.

My parents never talked about it, but they knew their marriage would not be recognized in every state. My father's tribal affiliation was not always recognized, when it comes down to it. And my mother, sometimes she was "white" under local law. Sometimes she was not. The #RFMA at least recognizes the stupidity of racism governing marriage laws.

The Respect for Marriage Act is so little, so late...but it's better than nothing. #RFMA
