Another volcanic eruption began in Iceland about 20 minutes ago near Hagafell. It's a few weeks overdue based on the volume of magmatic intrusion detected. A rapid increase in seismic activity earlier today was the tip-off that led to 200 staff being evacuated from the Blue Lagoon geothermal powerplant, and 30 people who were in Grindavík.

L'"attente" de la prochaine éruption évoque celle du cratère Geldingadalir (2021). Voici une ancienne capture d'écran issue de l'Icelandic Met Office qui montre une importante série de séismes survenus le 5 mars 2021. D'après les expatrié.e.s que je connais et qui vivaient au pays cette année-là, tout le monde s'attendait à ce que ça pète dans la foulée. Mais non. Il faudra attendre 2 semaines plus tard, soit le 19 mars vers 22h, pour que débute une longue éruption de 6 mois.

Les habitant.e.s de Seltjarnarnes (5000 hab) disposent d'une péninsule donnant un magnifique panorama sur les alentours, au même titre que le site de Bessastaðir. Petite promenade sous un vent polaire sur l'extrémité ouest de l'agglomération de Reykjavík avec son église étrange, son phare, son Suðurnesvarða, son blockhaus et son terrain de golf.

Demain, si la météo est bonne, retour à Krysuvik pour la probable dernière grande randonnée hivernale de la saison.

In 2019, we saw a sign pointing to a church. We followed the sign and saw no church. Confusing, but not uncommon.

During lockdowns, I kept seeing photos of the church the sign was pointing to all over social media. We were baffled. How could we have missed it??

It took some digging to solve the mystery. Turns out the church was burned down to the ground in 2010 but was rebuilt in 2020. Not many online sources, however, mentioned that fact. We went back there in 2022 and finally saw the church with our own eyes.

This is Krýsuvíkurkirkja in #Reykjanes peninsula in southwest #Iceland, which is the area where the current volcanic eruption is ongoing.

#Grænavatn (literally means Green Lake) is made of two craters that are over 6,000 years old which became water-filled. The deepest part of the #lake is about 45 meters deep. It is located in #Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest #Iceland, practically across the street from the #Krysuvik geothermal area. Great for a quick stop when exploring the area! It's a fairly small lake. You could probably walk around it in about half an hour (we didn't attempt it).
