  2. A quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson

It is the mark of a good action that it appears inevitable in the retrospect. We should have been cut-throats to do otherwise. And there’s an end. We ought to know distinctly that we are damned for what we do wrong; but when we have done right, we have only been gentlemen, after all. There is nothing to make a work about.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish essayist, novelist, poet
Essay (1880-01/02?), “Reflections and Remarks on Human Life,” § 6 “Right and Wrong”

  5. A quotation from Ursula K. Le Guin

It’s like all the time I was working keeping house and raising the kids and making love and earning our keep I thought there was going to come a time or there would be some place where all of it came together. Like it was words I was saying, all my life, all the kinds of work, just a word here and a word there, but finally all the words would make a sentence, and I could read the sentence. I would have made my soul and know what it was for. But I have made my soul and I don’t know what to do with it. Who wants it?

Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) American writer
Story (1995-11), “Ether, OR,” Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction, Vol. 19

  6. A quotation from Charles Mackay

The study of the errors into which great minds have fallen in the pursuit of truth can never be uninstructive. As the man looks back to the days of his childhood and his youth, and recalls to his mind the strange notions and false opinions that swayed his actions at that time, that he may wonder at them; so should society, for its edification, look back to the opinions which governed the ages fled. He is but a superficial thinker who would despise and refuse to hear of them merely because they are absurd. No man is so wise but that he may learn some wisdom from his past errors, either of thought or action; and no society has made such advances as to be capable of no improvement from the retrospect of its past folly and credulity.

Charles Mackay (1814-1889) Scottish poet, journalist, song writer
Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, “The Alchymists” (1841)

  8. A quotation from Joseph Addison

Persons in great stations have seldom their true characters drawn till several years after their deaths. Their personal friendships and enmities must cease, and the parties they were engaged in be at an end, before their faults or their virtues can have justice done to them.

  9. A quotation from Ella Wheeler Wilcox

And yet I would not be a child again.
For surely as the night succeeds the day,
So surely will their mirth turn into tears.
And I would not return to happy hours,
If I must live again these weary years.
I would walk on, and leave it all behind:
will walk on; and when my feet grow sore,
The boatman waits — his sails are all unfurled —
He waits to row me to a fairer shore.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919) American author, poet, temperance advocate, spiritualist
Poem (1868), “An Autumn Reverie,” st. 4-5, Shells (1873)

  12. A quotation from Don Herold

If I had my life to live over, I would try to make more mistakes next time. I would relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I know of very few things I would take seriously. I would be crazier. I would be less hygienic. I would take more chances. I would take more trips. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would burn up more gasoline. I would eat more ice cream and less bran. I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones.

  13. A quotation from Nassim Nicholas Taleb

History is opaque. You see what comes out, not the script that produces events, the generator of history. There is a fundamental incompleteness in your grasp of such events, since you do not see what’s inside the box, how the mechanisms work. What I call the generator of historical events is different from the events themselves, much as the minds of the gods cannot be read just by witnessing their deeds. You are very likely to be fooled about their intentions.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (b. 1960) Lebanese-American essayist, statistician, risk analyst, aphorist

  18. In 2020, I watched episodes of "Lizzie McGuire" on Disney+.

In , I've come to realize "Lizzie McGuire" relates to me in a way because of how *I* was in high school; someone who wanted to fit in and make friends, but at the same time, chart my own path forward and have fun.

Until then, I was *very* introverted and never outgoing. That's changed since attending my first school dance in October 2018.

In only so many words, that's most of my life as a .

  21. You can draw a straight line through 14 years of #pundits wondering if there’s really a threat, but in #retrospect they’ve just been using this benefit-of-the-doubt as cover to keep organizing, and they’ve captured a huge amount of political power at this point, especially in local politics

  22. @johnbudd1350 The only barrier here is that people want to buy where they want to live.
There are numerous opportunities for everyone even in shit times.

Do you want to creatively purchase a home there? Whether inner-city or rural -are you okay with moving there where you can afford to live and build a life and have a reasonable expectation of paying most of it off before you croak in a situation where your kids have no inheritance left?

Maybe there is no one. That's still okay, coz you gotta do you.

Be flexible or be renter - one leaves you with something to pass on (or to financially leverage against, when/if you no longer give a shit), while the other leaves you Doodly Squat.

But here's the thing, you never know what opportunities tomorrow will ultimately bring you - if you own even a shithole, you can leverage that investment later, and good times (later, economically) means you can realize the cash you put into your house of squalor until you can afford to leverage that into moving into the neighborhoods of those assholes that previously had condescended you, lolz 🤘🤡🤘

But that's a trap too - unless you're working to enjoy your infirm years and leave that shit (property and/or money) to your offspring, then if you like, you can certainly (and be very very sure this is all you give a shit about) fuckitall! Fuck everything and everyone and you just do that which suits you at that time and you'll make it still!

A bit rougher, with nothing to (supposedly) show, but a great God damned book should you choose to publish your life (and your kids might be even get fucking rich because of that).

It's the end... Well? It's the fricken' end. That's all. That's it. There's no other way to characterize it - your life. A thing, to be sure. If you're interested in how the question is asked about it by some random biographer, researcher, interviewer, or a family member, you have the chance during your life to shape the narrative to: "So.... Your life, tell me....?" -what will those answers be? Even if you can begin to glean that?

Remember, you're in control of the script - what should be written of you in the years to come after your passing?
