Zanim świat opanowały okienka Windowsa, fundamenty pod potęgę Microsoftu położył system MS-DOS. Teraz firma z Redmond sięgnęła do samych korzeni i udostępniła na zasadach open source kod, który jest od niego jeszcze starszy.
To prawdziwa gratka dla historyków technologii, zwłaszcza że ocalenie tego oprogramowania wymagało mrówczej pracy i walki ze starymi wydrukami.
Zanim powstał MS-DOS, był „szybki i brudny” 86-DOS
Programista Tim Paterson stworzył pierwotnie system 86-DOS, znany wcześniej w branży jako QDOS (skrót od „Quick and Dirty Operating System”). Microsoft, desperacko szukając oprogramowania dla powstającego wtedy komputera IBM PC 5150, najpierw licencjonował ten twór, a później w całości go odkupił. To właśnie ten kod stał się fundamentem, który po przemianowaniu na MS-DOS zdominował rynek komputerów osobistych na długie dekady.
Jak informują na blogu przedstawiciele Microsoftu, udostępniona paczka to najstarszy odnaleziony do tej pory kod źródłowy z tej rodziny. Znajdziemy w niej źródła jądra 86-DOS 1.00, wczesne wersje deweloperskie jądra PC-DOS 1.00 oraz klasyczne narzędzia, takie jak dobrze znany każdemu starszemu użytkownikowi komputerów CHKDSK.

Nowoczesne algorytmy OCR poległy na starym papierze
Najciekawsza w tej premierze jest jednak sama droga, jaką archaiczny kod musiał przebyć, by trafić do dzisiejszego repozytorium na GitHubie. Oprogramowanie z początku lat 80. było tak stare, że nie zachowało się w żadnej cyfrowej formie. Zespół historyków i archiwistów musiał ręcznie przepisywać i skanować kod z papierowych wydruków, dostarczonych przez samego twórcę, Tima Patersona.
Zadanie okazało się niezwykle karkołomne. Współczesne oprogramowanie OCR, służące do optycznego rozpoznawania znaków z obrazu, po prostu nie radziło sobie z jakością wyblakłych, kilkudziesięcioletnich kartek. Ostatecznie grupie pasjonatów udało się doprowadzić projekt do końca, ratując ten ważny kawałek cyfrowego dziedzictwa przed zapomnieniem.
Warto przypomnieć, że Microsoft ma już na koncie podobne inicjatywy chroniące historię PC. Wcześniej firma otworzyła kod źródłowy MS-DOS w wersjach 1.25, 2.0 oraz 4.0. Wszystkie te zbiory są obecnie dostępne do wglądu i pobrania z poziomu GitHuba.

Finally got one of these again. I had a 100LX like 20 years ago and sold it on eBay. I stumbled across this near mint 200LX and just had to splurge again. An actual MSDOS pocket PC. I have so much cool stuff to load on here.

If you're on Linux and want a really cool way to resemble CLIs on older machines, this little program lets you do just that.
It's a separate terminal emulator launched via your existing terminal emulator and lets you change color schemes to mimic retro computers (C64, PET, IBM PCs, Apple ][, etc).

Ok I feel kind of embarrassed asking this but would anyone know where I am supposed to plug these to?
I accidentally knocked it when trying to fix the hard drive in my Packard Bell Club 533C and now it won’t boot. It’s model number is G5GV05 - M4X4 - GI1 but I can’t seem to find a manual.
Edit: So I managed to get it to work again as I found an old not so great quality picture I took a while ago.
The hard drive light still shows up as orange on the front of the case when it boots and doesn't output a display so I guess the hard drive is dead or something? Or at least it is failing to POST

Next mini-project: set up my Pentium III Windows 98 machine to connect to Protoweb. Should be a piece of cake, if it weren't for finding a compatible NIC and installing those damn drivers! One step at a time.

I just spent half a day restoring my old IBM PC 330 to a working state. It features an Intel Pentium 166MHz with 16MB of SDRAM and an 8GB IDE harddisk drive. There's also a networking card, as well as a Soundblaster 16.
As much as I appreciate its compact design, it's a real pain to assemble! Oh, well.. looks like everything's working again. Hurray! 😀

Continuing DESQView (DV) adventure and making multitasking work on #DOS. Last nights stream I installed DV and we listened to a bunch of rocking midi music while teaching people about DOS memory management ❤️
We kept having issues that look like memory corruption in the “open menu” where random binary appeared in the command list, and dv was often complaining that “desqview.dvo” was missing or bad. Rather strange and the behavior seems inconsistent and dependent on memory allocations. Quite a few system crashes but we got to see two, three programs running side by side!
I already re-installed QEMM8.01 and upgraded it to QEMM8.03, to make sure there should be no issue with the memory manager. I also enabled QEMM stealth mode and the recommended options for DV (eg. partial DOS-UP).
MFT provides some convenient memory mapping details so I was able to investigate where the caught exceptions are happening, and it largely seems to be falling into memory space (1238:34FA) that shouldn’t be used by hardware devices (need to confirm) or DOS. Oddly enough DV itself doesn’t list loading anything into that space either, so it could be launched application space?
Still seeing crashes so unsure if the issue is in my hardware, but I really want to see this thing running properly ^^ I think I’m going to replace the RAM sticks in the system next and see if that helps.
