  1. I do love seeing early chitchat and design concepts for the PlayStation 2 in 1998 and 9 issues of game mags. PSM's August 1999 issue has some neat artists impressions (and lovely design sketches!) of not only what the console might look like but also its peripherals and media.

The PS2 would be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show in September of that year.

  2. The Elder Scrolls franchise starts here: Arena!

Released in Feb 1994, The Elder Scrolls: Arena was a sandbox CRPG unlike any other. It offered up the whole of Tamriel with hundreds of towns and dungeons to explore, crafting and spell creation systems - and laid the foundation for the franchise's lore.

Trivia: While the manual claims you can walk from one settlement to another, you actually can't; the area between them is infinite if you try. You need to use the fast travel system.

Beginning life as a gladiatorial combat game, the name Arena was later retconned into a nickname used by Tamriel's denizens for their world to reflect its harsh nature.

📖: Computer Gaming World, Aug 1994.

  3. Is that a dragon in your monitor or are you just pleased to see me? 🐉

The granddaddy of video games magazines: Computer Gaming World, issue one from November 1981. Which would run all the way through to 2006.

  4. From Concept to Console. The evolution of the Sony PlayStation and its accessories as showcased in Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Issue One from November 1995.

The NeGcon is a lovely thing, one of the stranger periphs I'm most glad to have.

  5. The Shape of Things to Come. EDGE issue one. I'm fortunate to have a copy of this seminal first issue in our mag library - a wonderful timepiece from the one of the most exciting times in tech and VG history.

As it's recently been the 30th anniversary, I'll share a few pages, with EDGE laying out its mission statement and striking a vibe unlike any other mag at the time as it gives us its visions of the future and a 90s that mostly never was.

  6. A peek at Sinclair User January 1987 - one of the Speccy mags we picked up in a big bundle last week.

I was still too young for Judge Dredd and 2000AD in 1987, but give it a few years and I'd have been very happy to see ol' Stoneyface on the cover of a games mag.

And This is pretty neat, the first recruitment ad for Ocean I've come across in a mag. proclaiming riches can be yours in the booming home micro market in the UK and Europe. No VG Crash here! And cue the Pet Shop Boys and Opportunities. xD

Some quality Durell and FTL software too - usually a watchword in quality.

  7. Good afternoon!

See that attribute clash and hear that beepy AY sound? That's a Speccy flavoured toot coming your way!

I picked up a big bundle of Crash and Your Sinclair magazines from 88-90 yesterday (26 for £25!), plugging a #ZXSpectrum shaped hole in our magazine library. And so, here's a few snippets of January 1989 CRASH.

Batman on the cover (though it's not referring to the movie one!), an iconic Barbarian II ad with a Gladiators TV show connection (that's Wolf!), Thalamus shmupery, and poking in some cheats!

  8. War has never been so much fun.

    Cannon Fodder print ad, 1993.

The game cover from which this ad was taken is Infamously sans a poppy after the Royal British Legion protested and threatened legal action against the whole Amiga world. In its place, a neat little optical illusion.

Cannon Fodder is a staunchly anti-war game, something that all of its tabloid press detractors at the time failed to take into account.

  9. A lucky Facebook Marketplace spot the other day has netted us another lovely bundle of classic game mags to add to our library (now at 600 or so!), a mix of #Amiga and #AtariST mags in great condition. All for a tenner!

  10. Greetings, Earthlings of Trunksite! Turn the front page of the first issue of Sega Saturn Magazine Japan and you are greeted by something... truly otherworldly.

  11. A two-fer of Ocean and Thalamus awesomeness in both ad and game form from The One magazine in 1989. 🔥

After smashing success right in the gob on 8-bits, Robocop is heading to #Amiga and #AtariST!

    And Hawkeye, what a game.

  12. From one of Electronic Arts' early 90s brochures - the EA Airforce!

I love seeing ads for Electronic Arts' short-lived Airforce branding for games such as Desert Strike, LHX, and F-22.

For those unacquainted, the Mega Drive/Sega Genesis had a surprising amount of flight simulation games ported or created for it. And Electronic Arts in its pre-evil years put out enough that they wanted a brand for it, ala EA Sports. They're one of my favourite things in the whole wide world for how much effort and heart they put into making flight sims work on a 3-button joypad console.

And so EA Airforce was born... and then pretty much vanished right away. But lasted long enough for ads so much like this of their time to appear!

Endlich kommt eines meiner absoluten Lieblings-Spiele auf die Titelseite!

  14. From ACE magazine's March 1992 issue: an ad for a landmark title, an epic adventure in the Stygian Abyss - in 3D!

This is one of the joys for me in picking up and delving into old mags - ads and hype for landmark games.

I didn't actually play Ultima Underworld until 1999-2000 after picking up the Ultima Collection. And it was difficult to run by that point on my Win 98 PC at the correct speed and without crashes.

Ironic that it's easier these days to run games as they should be than just a handful of years after their original release.

  15. Ask Me About LOOM!

    Aye.

I'm a big collector of mainly 80s-90s VG gaming magazines with a library of 500 or so of them. And some of my absolute favourites to go through are The One when it was still a multi-format magazine. And so, when I come across a review of one of my favourite point-and-click adventure games, it's a happy day.

The One wasn't especially thrilled with LOOM tho, awarding it only 80%. Their main critique? It's too easy and it feels more like a mildly interactive story than something you'll hammer away at the puzzles on for months.

  16. I put up a first blog post in a series, as I look back at each Nintendo Power issue in order! For my own sanity I'm only committing to the first year for now, then we'll see how things go.

  18. Here's a little #retro Christmas Eve Eve gift for you, direct from a random corner of my house: A 1995-ish "EXPERIENCE SEGA" trifold advertisment featuring the Genesis model 2, Sega CD, and Sega 32X! This might have been an advert included with the documentation for the Sega CDX system - if anyone knows for certain, I'd love too know! :3

  19. Any love for old gaming mags out there in Mastodon space? And particular fave reads?

They're one of the things I'm most passionate about collecting and digging into to share titbits from and have amassed a collection of several hundred spanning generations from C64 to Wii.
