I’m wrong, the 475 is line level but the PowerBook is not. That’s why the omnidirectional Apple microphone with the regular jack works on the PowerBook but not on the 475. It requires the PlainTalk microphone with the long jack and internal pre-amp. I guess the iPhone problem is just the sound output is too low due to regulations. Gonna try with a real line level thing tomorrow.
I used to have a PlainTalk microphone but I guess I gave it away at some point. 😩

Is the audio in on the LC 475 quite low compared to other Macs from the same time (like the PowerBook 145)? I am aware they are all line level and I’ve recapped them, but both my 475 boards record at about 1/4 of max level from my iPhone at max volume. Same setup with the PowerBook 145 saturates the input easily. Sound output works great on them so the sound chip is working. #retroApple

Just found out an Easter egg in the Sound system preferences of System 7.1 by accident. #retroApple

It also seems to be converging to the dark color among the stains, not the light one. #retrobright #retroApple

So about the #retrobright mice… it didn’t go that well. First pic is how one of them looked after the process. Lots of very visible stains. I’ve read to get rid of them I need to reapply the peroxide, this time without wrapper. It has to be continuously re-applied to avoid drying out. So I did, every 10-20 minutes for 2-3 hours. It got… better? But not great. Yet, at least. Second pic: on the left the mouse that went through the second treatment, on the right the one that didn’t. #retroApple

Very pleased with today’s find. I remember seeing these in Mac magazines and catalogs as a kid. I owned a Gravis joystick but not the game pad. #VintageApple #VintageMac #RetroApple #RetroComputing #RetroMac #RetroMacintosh

And I just found the solution for this. PowerPlant comes with a full implementation of the Appearance-only views for pre-Appearance systems. This is nuts! #retroApple

Divided between “PowerPlant is awesome!" and "C++ is the most insane language I ever worked it”. Insane in a bad way.
The main thing missing in PowerPlant is the outlet stuff. With that, it would be at almost the same level as AppKit given the context it works on. Dealing with IDs is poopy but well, it works. #retroApple

I’m not exactly complaining but how on earth can an app that uses Appearance Manager work on 7.1 without Appearance Manager installed, using the correct look? Jeebuz I don’t remember anything about how to build apps on classic Mac OS. #retroApple

TIL (well, YIL) classic MacOS Thread Manager supported preemptive multi threading but then dropped it for cooperative multi threading only. But… why?! Seems like quite the downgrade. #retroApple

I do have “before” photos of the inside, though. The spring and one screw were very rusty. The plastic and the spring are pristine now, the screw is almost perfect as well. Vinegar did a pretty good job on the metals but I may try with Evaporust that is also on the way. #retroApple

I forgot to take a “before” photo but yesterday night I cleaned and recapped this little guy. It was disgusting. The cable was mostly black, the mouse was sticky, the apple logo and the bottom full of dirt, the screws (external and internal) were rusty, and the ball didn’t roll at all.
It looks and works great now! All that’s left is gluing that tiny plastic part that came out with the wash, and retrobright. I’m waiting for the magic peroxide thing and, well, for sunlight. ⛅️ #retroApple

Finally tried CodeWarrior’s PowerPlant. Very cool and infinitely better than dealing with the toolbox directly.
But even better is launching CodeWarrior on a G3 machine running 9.2, building, AppleTalking it to a 68040 running 7.1, launching and it just works.
No code signing, no certificates, no nothing. Just software. Just works.
Yes simpler times I know. But it feels good. #retroApple

Because I need another side project, I'm learning CodeWarrior’s PowerPlant framework. I'm really impressed by the architecture, specially the use of multiple inheritance. In the documentation, they even take a stab at AppKit comparing both hierarchies, specially the fact NSView needs to be a responder.
Unfortunately, I'm suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome on my right arm, which means I need to tone down computer usage during the weekends. So, just reading documentation so far. #retroApple

Is there an HTML parsing library for classic MacOS? Not rendering, just something that parses and build a tree or something. #retroApple #retrocomputing

Good news, that made me really happy: just got a report MacDVI works out of the box on a MacSE! 😁
MacDVI is my open source software you can run on any Pico 2 to convert your compact Mac TTL video do HDMI. The best picture quality for the price of a Pico 2! #retroApple https://codeberg.org/arroz/MacDVI

It seems to fit the other battery holders properly but was a bit lose on this one and didn’t make good contact. So I added a bit of cardboard below it attached with tape and it’s now perfect! Let’s see if it boots. #retroApple

I sometimes see photos of vintage Macs with new memory modules, usually purple PCBs. Does anyone remember or know what those are, and who sells them? #retroApple #retrocomputing
