"It’s a clear day in the skies above southern Ontario.
"Jessica Lax peeks out of the window of a cherry-red turboprop plane. Below is a patchwork of greens and blues: the farms, forests, highways, and shoreline between Kingston and Brockville.
" 'I can see how sharp the lines are between the forest cover and the development,' Lax said. 'Seeing it from a broader perspective, you can see how stark it is.'
"Lax is the executive director of the #A2ACollaborative. It’s a binational group focused on protecting and improving a major #WildlifeCorridor that spans across southern Ontario and northern #NewYork.
"She’s taking photos and videos of an 85-kilometer (or 52-mile) stretch of Ontario’s Highway 401. In a section between #Mallorytown and #Gananoque, the lanes of traffic split, and a forested median fills the gap.
" 'It's another area where we have recommended a wildlife overpass,' she said over the airplane's headset. 'So I'm trying to get an image of how the forest cover connects.'
"#A2A has pinpointed two more locations along the 401 between Gananoque and #Brockville where they think overpasses and underpasses could help more animals survive crossing the busy highway, Lax said.
"That’s because this area is a critical wildlife pathway in northeastern #NorthAmerica."

Campaigners present ‘#VisionOfHope’ for #Scotland to become #rewilding nation - #ScottishRewildingAlliance said the country can ‘lead the movement for global change’.
"We also need to support #nature to help address the #ClimateCrisis and to create a climate resilient Scotland. We know we must protect and restore the natural environment for future generations."

Wednesday 04 December 2024"A campaign group calling for Scotland to be declared the world’s first '#RewildingNation' has presented the Scottish Government with proposals for rewilding 30% of the country’s land and seas.
"The Scottish Rewilding Alliance, a coalition of more than 20 conservation and nature-focused organisations, presented what it called its 'vision of hope' to Scotland’s climate action minister, Alasdair Allan, during a reception in Edinburgh.
"The alliance said rewilding 30% of Scotland can be achieved if ministers 'show leadership' and commit to 'meaningful action' to restore habitats including #peatlands, native #woodlands, #wetlands, #rivers and #seas.
"It said this can be achieved while maintaining and benefiting productive #farmland.
"Doing so, they said, would help tackle the connected nature and climate emergencies, and create benefits for people and local communities around health, jobs, sustainable food production, re-peopling, clean air and water, and healthy rivers and seas."
