"It’s a clear day in the skies above southern Ontario.
"Jessica Lax peeks out of the window of a cherry-red turboprop plane. Below is a patchwork of greens and blues: the farms, forests, highways, and shoreline between Kingston and Brockville.
" 'I can see how sharp the lines are between the forest cover and the development,' Lax said. 'Seeing it from a broader perspective, you can see how stark it is.'
"Lax is the executive director of the #A2ACollaborative. It’s a binational group focused on protecting and improving a major #WildlifeCorridor that spans across southern Ontario and northern #NewYork.
"She’s taking photos and videos of an 85-kilometer (or 52-mile) stretch of Ontario’s Highway 401. In a section between #Mallorytown and #Gananoque, the lanes of traffic split, and a forested median fills the gap.
" 'It's another area where we have recommended a wildlife overpass,' she said over the airplane's headset. 'So I'm trying to get an image of how the forest cover connects.'
"#A2A has pinpointed two more locations along the 401 between Gananoque and #Brockville where they think overpasses and underpasses could help more animals survive crossing the busy highway, Lax said.
"That’s because this area is a critical wildlife pathway in northeastern #NorthAmerica."

"Tribal officials say their habitat projects will help people as well as #salmon the next time floodwaters rise.
"With restored #floodplains, more of the #StillaguamishRiver's destructive surges can spread out and dissipate before causing harm.
"The Stillaguamish Tribe built a new levee last year, farther back from the river, before removing the old levee.
" 'By giving the river more space, we are reducing the damage and the expense to society to maintain infrastructure. It's cheaper to maintain if you stay further away,' Griffith says."

#WetlandRestoration and Improvement Projects Receive $4.6 Million in Funding

AUGUSTA, Maine — "The Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program (#MNRCP) awarded over $4.6 million for 10 projects that will restore and enhance freshwater and coastal wetlands and streams, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (#MaineDEP) announced today.
The projects awarded funding include:
- Improving degraded #SaltMarsh around the #YorkRiver
- Restoring #eelgrass in the #GreatSaltBay
- Removing dams on the #RoyalRiver in #YarmouthME and the #NezinscotRiver in #BuckfieldME
- Reconnecting a side channel and reestablishing #wetlands along the Upper #MagallowayRiver
- Expanding and enhancing the #RiparianBuffer of a brook in #WaldoboroME
- Upgrading a culvert to a bridge on a tributary to the #AroostookRiver
- Restoring and reconnecting #wetlands in #AcadiaNationalPark"In total, $4,633,343 was awarded to restore wetlands that will improve water quality, enhance fish and wildlife habitat, and mitigate flooding impacts.
"#MNRCP is one of the most important funding sources for wetland restoration and conservation projects in the state. Since it began in 2008, the program has awarded over $36 million for 183 wetland restoration and conservation projects. Public agencies, municipalities, Tribes and nonprofit conservation organizations are all eligible to apply for funding. MNRCP funding can cover the costs of wetland consultants and engineers who support project design and implementation.
"The program provides opportunities for restoration projects that help improve a broad range of critical habitats, both inland and along Maine’s coast."
