Hywel Dda launches new strategy to expand clinical research and innovation
Hywel Dda University Health Board has unveiled a new five-year strategy to accelerate the development of innovative medicines and treatments, with a focus on improving health outcomes and economic growth across west Wales.
The Research and Innovation Strategic Plan, launched on 21 July, sets out a roadmap to expand clinical trials, deepen partnerships with universities and industry, and embed innovation across key areas including cancer care, respiratory disease, women’s health, digital health, and primary care.
“We’ve made significant progress over the past four years,” said Professor Leighton Phillips, Director of Research, Innovation and Value at Hywel Dda. “Now is the time to build on those achievements and make the most of favourable policy and funding opportunities in Wales and the UK.”
The health board now operates designated research facilities in every county, supported by a growing network of clinical researchers and the TriTech Institute, which provides innovation and evaluation capabilities.
A major focus of the strategy is expanding access to commercial clinical trials, which offer patients early access to promising new treatments. Professor Keir Lewis, clinical lead for respiratory medicine at Prince Philip Hospital, said global trials funded by pharmaceutical companies are already benefiting local patients.
“We’re enrolling patients in trials for inhalers and antibiotics — and if successful, these treatments could become standard care within five to ten years,” said Lewis.
One such patient is Jim Carroll, 64, originally from Brynaman and now living in Swansea. Diagnosed with COPD, Jim took part in a clinical trial at Prince Philip Hospital and now uses an inhaler developed through the study.
“It’s made a big difference — I can pick up my granddaughters from school and be active in their lives,” he said.
Beyond patient benefits, the strategy highlights the wider impact of research on staff development, job creation, and regional economic growth. Professor Phillips said organisations with strong research cultures attract and retain top talent, and help drive innovation across the NHS.
“We’ll be strengthening our partnerships with universities, public bodies, community organisations and industry to deliver on this vision,” he added.

This morning I felt the brain fog drifting in. Out of curiosity, I checked my Apple Watch to see what my blood oxygen levels were. Maybe they'd been bad overnight? No, they'd been good.
So I checked my current blood oxygen levels. They were down to 88%. Yikes!
I spent the next few minutes doing square breathing. I tested again and my blood oxygen was up to 98%. My banks of brain fog dissipated.
What the heck? Do I just stop breathing or something and that's why I can't think for shit? What is this nonsense?

This morning I went for my annual lung checkup. My lung capacity is down a negligible amount, but is rated as excellent. My asthma is well-controlled because I am healthy and medicate daily. A cold, RSV, flu, or COVID could change all that rapidly.
After my appointment, I went to an X-ray clinic to get my knees X-rayed, and although several people there were wearing masks, several people with nasty coughs were not wearing masks. I hope my N95 did its job. I threw it out as soon as I was out of the clinic. I don't understand why people are so inconsiderate. I don't care if it's "just a cold." I've had to go to the hospital on numerous occasions because a common cold put me in a breathing emergency.
If you're sick and you're not wearing a mask in public, you could very well disable or kill someone. Don't be a dick. Mask up.

I went to high school in Nackawic, New Brunswick. Although it's in a gorgeous part of the province, I don't have many good memories. It smelled awful throughout my teens because of the pulp mill. When I went back there this morning to fill up the gas tank, even though it didn't stink, I started coughing. Big plumes of smoke rose up from the distant smokestacks. I’m feeling better every day and this is my fourth day testing negative for COVID. Looks like it was just a cold. I am very relieved. I didn’t need to take any cold medicine last night, and my brains are working better again. I feel very lucky that it didn’t go into my lungs. Still not sure where I contracted this. The air has been bad all summer and it’s been making me unwell. I’m back to using my emergency puffer a few times a week when before all the air pollution, I used it once every few months. The air is poison today so I wore my mask for my entire workout. I don’t know how firefighters do all that training with respirators on, but I’m possibly gonna find out. I wore a mask while running, biking, doing about 150 walking lunges, a heap of Nordic curls, knee raises, and a bunch of high crossbody box step-ups. I wore a mask yesterday for a 5km cross country hike. Wearing a mask while training is a heck of a handicap. I feel like I’m doing everything while carrying a sandbag. It’s a lot harder for me to regulate my breathing because the fitted piece going over my nose feels like it’s cutting off some of my nasal airways, and I end up sucking wind through my mouth instead. I have a medical procedure coming up and had to answer a questionnaire. Among other things, I was asked if I have problems with “blenching”. I looked that word up, but can find no definition. There was also no way for me to request feedback, so I’m left wondering if they meant belching, blanching, or something else altogether. Ugh. Also, I was asked if I experience headaches, gut issues, congestion, coughing, etc. The answer is yes. Those are all part of a normal day for me. My sister and her kids are coming to visit tomorrow, and I’m afraid I’ll be in too much pain to enjoy the visit. My teeth are a disaster, but I’ve only had to have two fillings this year. I feel miserable doing physical training while wearing a mask, but the training is good for my muscles and bones. My performance at Tribally Yours in 2007. I was in the midst of a terrible asthma attack throughout this performance, and no one had a clue because the show must go on. I was barely breathing the entire time. When I got off stage, I basically collapsed. The smoke machine at the venue is what triggered it.
