CW: Review for "Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy", including some spoilers
So, that's credits rolled on "Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy". I **really** enjoyed it.
The gameplay is a mix of combat, exploration and puzzling. If you liked the first 2010s Tomb Raider game you'll probably like this.
Combat:
It's melee combat, no aiming for this, and thus I played on a controller. There's very little auto-camera (and I couldn't find any options to change this), which did lead to a few frustrating moments, as you both need to steer the camera with right thumb *and* use it for 3 key combat actions. There's also this one thing that took me a while to realise (story spoiler), when you're playing as Theseus you only have *their* abilities, not any of your own upgrades. I was wondering why I suddenly didn't seem able to parry red attacks... . In general it's a little crunchy, and you will need to learn all the mechanisms. Oh, and even the *same* enemies can change the cadence/type of their attacks. That's mostly some of the bosses, and it does mean you have to treat each phase as like fighting a whole new enemy.
Exploration:
This is a minor aspect, as the game is fairly linear. If you want to get as many collectibles as possible, and those include the upgrade points, you'll need to check every nook and cranny ( I didn't find them all on first play-through).
Puzzling:
There are a number of puzzles which you must solve in order to progress. Some to do with light, others combining that with tools you acquire along the way. There is a hint system, which thankfully you can turn off! Even with it on, it's just nudging you to press up on the d-pad to reveal a hint.
Next game(s)? At the very end of the game there are hints at *two* possible further games set in this world. I'm not sure which I'd be more excited for!
