The update to #ubuntu #resoluteRaccoon has not been a smooth one. Gnome’s crashed and kicked me out, losing all my work, three times today, and now the fans are going full tilt with nothing to show for CPU use in htop.
This is the first time I have ever heard the fans on this laptop 😳

.NET 8.0 LTS is not installable on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon
During development of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon, which is expected to come with .NET 10.0 LTS that was released last week, there was a proposal to remove .NET 8.0 from the list of installable software in both the runtime and the SDK forms. This was made in accordance with the comment in a 2023 .NET 6.0 bug that stated:
- We will ship the latest .NET LTS (e.g. .NET 6, 8, 10) to the latest Ubuntu LTS and backport to the -1 Ubuntu LTS and Interim releases.- We will ship .NET STS releases (.NET 7, 9, 11) only to Ubuntu Interim releases.e.g.- .NET 8 LTS will be on 22.04 LTS, 23.10 and 24.04 LTS- .NET 9 STS will be on 24.10, 25.04, 25.10- .NET 10 LTS will be on 24.04 LTS, 25.04, 25.10 and 26.04 LTSAs .NET 10.0 is a long-term release that will make its way to Ubuntu 26.04 Resolute Raccoon, it has been backported to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which is the current LTS version that is supported as of the time of writing. Meanwhile, .NET 8.0 has already been backported to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish, and there is no mention of forward-porting the version to the next Ubuntu LTS version.
To satisfy this condition, all packages that are related to .NET 8.0 have been removed from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon. You can take a look at this bug’s logs here.
Check out the bug reportStarting from today, you’ll no longer be able to install .NET 8.0 from your development system from official Ubuntu repositories if you’re running the development branch of Resolute Raccoon. You’ll either have to upgrade your applications to .NET 10.0, or you’ll have to manually install .NET 8.0.
Meanwhile, the team is running into issues with packaging the final version of .NET 10.0 for the same version of Ubuntu, but those issues should be fixed soon so that developers can finally have access to the latest .NET version.
Check out the SRU bugAs a consequence, we had to remove all Nitrocid and BassBoom packages for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon until all packages that are related to .NET 10.0 have landed.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon is now available!
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon is now available for users! This succeeds the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat, which was a previous long-term support version of Ubuntu that provides 15 years of total support, with 5 years of mainstream support for bug fixes and other improvements.
Since Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, more improvements have been made to the Ubuntu desktop experience to make your productivity more streamlined than before. With the introduction of GNOME 50, the desktop has seen many enhancements, such as better fractional scaling that minimizes blurring, monospace font size reduction to match the standard UI font, and a brand new system performance utility that lets you discover performance issues.
According to the official changelogs for LTS users, Ubuntu 26.04 has incorporated several new applications, including, but not limited to:
- Papers document viewer: The new document viewer replaces Evince that is actually a fork of Evince that uses GTK4 and partial usage of Rust for both memory safety and performance improvements.
- Loupe image viewer: The new image viewer replaces Eye of GNOME to use the new Glycin library written in Rust for faster and more secure image viewing.
- Ptyxis terminal emulator: The new terminal emulator replaces the older GNOME Terminal to ensure that more polished look matches the aesthetics of the Ubuntu desktop. Also, it supports directly running containers through
podman, toolbox, anddistrobox. - Resources system monitor: The new system monitor app replaces System Monitor and Power Statistics to monitor the utilization of system resources more effortlessly.
Alongside the new applications, Ubuntu has also seen more improvements across different areas of the desktop, such as exclusivity to Wayland. In case you’re not a fan of Wayland, Ubuntu flavors still exist, such as Xubuntu.
The App Center has seen many improvements since the last LTS release, including installs in progress, third-part deb installation, and direct uninstall of snaps from the app manager. Additionally, Security Center has been added to check your computer’s security.
As for users who are using ARM64 systems, initial hardware enablement work is conducted with the Snapdragon X Elite platform that is included in the desktop ISO, along with a generic ARM64 ISOs targeting virtual machines, ACPI + EFI platforms, and Snapdragon-based Windows-on-ARM (WoA) devices.
If you are frustrated with the way the software updater notifies you that updates are available by opening windows, the software updater has been reworked to give you an actual notification if there are available updates. An icon in the system tray will remind you that there are available updates, even though the notification has been dismissed.
The following frameworks have been updated, including, but not limited to:
- OpenSSH 1:10.2p1
- ClamAV v1.4.3
- Django v5.2
- PHP v8.5
- Dovecot v2.4.2
- Postfix v3.10.0
- Samba v4.23
- Squid v7.2
- SSSD v2.12
- MySQL v8.4.8
- PostgreSQL v18
- Valkey v9.0.3
Finally, .NET 10.0 is included with the release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, which allows developers and users to build and run applications that are built with .NET 10.0 to allow access to the latest features and improvements that were done in this new LTS version of .NET. Canonical has also introduced a new way to install .NET using snaps instead of a regular APT, starting with .NET 10.0.
For developers, the following toolchains, apart from .NET, have been released:
- GCC v15.2, binutils v2.45, glibc v2.42
- Python v3.13.9 and v3.14
- LLVM v21
- Rust v1.91, v1.92, v1.93
- Golang v1.25
- Zig v0.14.1
- OpenJDK v8, v11, v17, v21, v25, v26 preview, v27 preview
To upgrade your system to 26.04 LTS, either open the terminal and run sudo do-release-upgrade, or open Software Updates and start the upgrade. Make sure that your packages are upgraded first.

Currently, Zig v0.15 is used to build Ghostty, and the terminal emulator is available for Ubuntu systems on 64-bit processors, with amd64 and arm64 being the supported architectures.
You’ll need a graphics card that supports OpenGL v4.3 or later in order for Ghostty to work. If you have a graphics card that doesn’t meet this requirement, you’ll have to either find another terminal emulator or launch Ghostty with software rendering, with:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true ghosttyThe Ghostty library, libghostty, is currently not available as a system-wide library, but a future package update will include it.

Are you ready for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon?
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat brought improvements to the Ubuntu desktop while introducing new features. It was released as a long-term support version rather than the short-term support version to make it suitable for both regular desktop users and enterprise users.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon will be released after tomorrow. To learn more about the changes, consult the changelogs below.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon increases its system requirements
As we are heading towards the imminent final release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon, which is going to mark 20 years of Ubuntu LTS releases with the eleventh LTS release since 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake, Canonical has recently updated the system requirements for this version of Ubuntu in the operating system’s website.
This system requirements update is going to disappoint some people, especially when they’re using old computers, as some of those requirements to be able to run Ubuntu have been increased. According to the official Ubuntu documentation, the below specifications is required:
- CPU: a 2 GHz dual-core processor or higher (with 64-bit + SSE2 support)
- GPU: a minimum of 6 GB RAM
- Storage: a minimum of 25 GB of free space
For older releases, the requirements have been:
- CPU: a 2 GHz dual-core processor or higher (with 64-bit + SSE2 support)
- GPU: a minimum of 4 GB RAM (physical) or 2 GB RAM (virtualized)
- Storage: a minimum of 25 GB of free space
However, the Ubuntu Server requirements haven’t been updated, since the documentation states that at least 1.5 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free hard drive space is required for successful installation.
You may be able to run this version of Ubuntu on a computer that doesn’t meet the requirements, but you may or may not experience problems in the long run, depending on your workflow.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon enters the Beta freeze!
As we are approaching the beta stage of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon, the version has finally entered the Beta Freeze as of today on March 23rd, which is a stage that all further package releases that affect the beta release after the freeze date will have to undergo manual approval by the release team before entering the archives.
Before the beta freeze, all uploads can enter the archive without any human intervention, which supports fast development during the early stages of a Ubuntu version development. After the freeze, manual approval for essential packages is required to ensure that the beta release stays stable by fixing package inconsistencies and critical bugs quickly.
After the freeze, all packages that don’t affect the beta release will still be automatically approved without any human intervention until the final freeze, scheduled for April 16th.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccon Beta will be released on March 26th, which will allow users to conduct tests on an upcoming version of Ubuntu before the official release on April 23rd.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon enters the User Interface freeze
Today, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon has entered a new stage of development, according to the release schedule. The development team has today announced in the mailing list that this version of Ubuntu has entered the user interface freeze.
The official Ubuntu documentation states that the user interface freeze means that there will be no more changes to how the upcoming version of Ubuntu looks, alongside the user interface elements and appearance. This has the following advantages for those working on the project:
- Documentation writers and translators will be able to work on a fixed target without the user interface changes causing chaos for them.
- Screenshot and documentations don’t become obsolete caused by a change in the user interface.
By preventing obsoletion of both the docs and the screenshots, this makes sure that users who need help using a specific application get the most up-to-date instructions.
To explain the freeze in more depth, here’s when will the changes be considered unacceptable:
- User Interface of individual applications that are installed by default
- Appearance of the Desktop
- Distribution-specific artwork
- All user-visible strings in the Desktop and applications that are installed by default
However, an exception can be applied in certain circumstances, and can be filed using the official bug tracker at Launchpad. These bugs explain the justification for the UI change, as well as the explanation as to how its benefits would break existing documentation, screenshots, and translations. You can request for the UI freeze exception here.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon will be released on April 23rd.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon Snapshot 4 released!
The fourth and the last snapshot has been released, highlighting the changes between the previous snapshot (January 29th) and the current one (February 26th). On March 26th, Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka will reach the Beta stage according to the planned release schedule.
The official plan stated that the Ubuntu release team wanted to release Ubuntu every six months, while relying on the modern software engineering practices. More automated testing will be made to ensure that future releases will have next-to-zero problems that may cause a delay of the release. Alongside this, the release process will be refined to achieve the goal of little to no human intervention when dealing with releases.
The Ubuntu release team describe the snapshot releases as not production-ready releases, but as testable milestones that allow you to try out the upcoming version of Ubuntu without having to wait until the official release.
You can find those snapshots here:

Ubuntu 26.04 Resolute Raccoon will use .NET 10.0!
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon is reportedly to start development in a week after the release of Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka, which was released today. This version of Ubuntu will feature the upcoming .NET 10.0 LTS release which will be supported for up to three years, with the most interesting features being in the final release. With Ubuntu 26.04 LTS about to start development, .NET 10.0 would have been already updated to its second release candidate, a milestone before the final release.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is going to be the tenth long term support release, which is a very interesting milestone as we are heading towards years and years of improvements that happened to Ubuntu, starting from 2004 with the Warty Warthog. You can find out more about .NET 10.0 here.
.NET 10.0 is going to be the long-term support release for the modern .NET framework after 8.0, which was released on November 2023. Earlier, .NET 9.0 brought performance improvements, but .NET 10.0 will bring even more improvements across different areas of the framework.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will also update more frameworks and toolchains, including GCC, Python, and others, to support the latest features that will make it to the release. This will give developers new features to develop their applications, including the .NET ones, which .NET 10.0 provides.
.NET 10.0 brings improvements to the AOD applications, as well as the AVX10.2 support. It also brings C# 14, which introduces new features, such as unbound generic types support for the
nameofexpression.Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon will be released on April 2026, while .NET 10.0 will go live on November 2025.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has a codename: Resolute Raccoon!
This week, when Canonical is supposed to be releasing Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka, the Ubuntu’s official X account has revealed some very interesting information about the next LTS that will come after Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat. The next LTS, which will be released on April 2026, will be codenamed Resolute Raccoon!
https://twitter.com/ubuntu/status/1975147272577929456
This is going to mark one of the very important development milestones for the whole Ubuntu project as it marks the tenth long term release version that will be released since the Dapper Drake appeared on June 2006. This release will be a very promising version, and it will feature some of the huge changes that will make it to the Resolute Raccoon version since Noble Numbat.
The development hasn’t started yet, but the codename is now known to the public, which is something that is very interesting, especially when it comes to long term support releases. Those releases are known for their stability and their high quality, with updates being done for twelve years for the whole support cycle.
We will let you know once development of the next LTS starts, and we will closely monitor the release as it goes, with some of our tests added to our pipeline to make sure that Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon gets released in the highest quality possible.
