Q. is it a coincidence that no sooner than Wes Streeting has stood down from being Health Secretary, the Govt. has been able to seal a deal with the Resident Doctors?
Is this Andy Burnham's October Surprise (if a little early in the political cycle of his accession to PM)?
In any case what it may indicate is that when someone who is not trusted is moved away from a deal that deal becomes possible.....

Well, it looks like the arrival of James Murray at the Dept.of Health *may* have produced a deal which will end the on-going dispute with the Resident Doctors.
No more money this year but accelerated rises in forthcoming years (if kept to) may do it, and has led to next week's strike being called off.
Now much will depend on whether the RDs actually trust Murray more than Streeting?

Empathy: “I want to know how you feel”
I’m Adam Widdison, author of The Expert Clinician. My work explores how healthcare professionals (HCPs) think — and, more importantly, how we can sharpen that thinking in the high-pressure reality of modern practice. In my previous blog, Connection: The Secret to a Successful Consultation, I explored why a strong working relationship is essential to effective care. Without it, even the most accurate diagnosis or the most carefully designed management plan can fail. Managing a […]https://theexpertclinician.com/2026/06/03/empathy-i-want-to-know-how-you-feel/

In just under three weeks tie the Resident Doctors will be on strike again, unless the new Secretary of Health, James Murray can (re)build bridges.... oh wait a minute, the strike was called *after* RD representatives met him.
Oh well, perhaps he will busy himself in the next two weeks building those bridges.... oh no, hold on; he's also said he's unwilling to negotiate on pay.
So just more of the same stand-off then...

Resident Doctors Face Grueling Shifts Amidst Calls for Reform
Resident doctors in India work up to 36 hours straight, risking patient safety. Supreme Court and panels demand reforms for better working hours.

The Resident Doctors strike is under way & you'll have seen a lot of coverage, perhaps most obviously claiming that public support for the RDs is ebbing away.
Well, leaving the opinion polling issue to one side, here is Charlotte Tomlinson's view from the GP surgery. She is particularly critical of Keir Starmer's tactic of suspending training places for doctors.
(it might be better to read this than a lot of the online media commentary)

@kibcol1049
Maybe she should take a leaf out her boss’s negotiating manual and threaten to withdraw an offer that de-escalated a previous dispute.
That just about guarantees failure. -

I've had a number of surgeries, GP, and hospital appointments over the last few months. I'd just like to express my thanks and support for the #ResidentDoctors and all the other #nhs staff that I have encountered. You are all doing a wonderful job under very difficult conditions.

Doctors are not worth 20% less than in 2008. They are taking on £120k of student debt. Immigrants who would help with the workload are being turned away and denied a pathway to settled status. And the richest in this in country have quadruped their wealth in the same time period.

I asked #SocialismAI "How can UK Resident Doctors win their dispute?"
Answer in link below!

I may not be an professional workplace negotiator, but calling the other side 'moaning minnies' during an acrimonious labour dispute, really doesn't suggest a serious intent to resolve things.
It look like West Streeting is rather seeking to enflame the situation, so that he can (further) demonise the Resident Doctors; he may be banking on being able to hold the moral high ground with the public... my guess is he may be (very) wrong!?

The next round of the Resident Doctors strike will start on Wednesday 17th (for five days as before)... the RDs may struggle to maintain a good level of public backing for their action but equally, its pretty clear that Wes Streeting has little real interest in resolving the dispute... as always (as the RDs will know), its patents who will be adversing effected during those five days.
Expect the war of words to shift gear in the coming days....

When doctors were pale, male, and stale, nobody had a problem with them being some of the highest-paid in society.
Could it be that some people (Tories) just cannot stand brown or female people being paid more than themselves, regardless of the doctor's worth to society?

I missed the memo when #juniorDoctors became #residentDoctors, but I feel it doesn't add clarity to the differences between medical personnel. My first suspicion was that the renaming was punishment for last year's strikes, but apparently not. https://www.bma.org.uk/news-and-opinion/junior-doctors-are-changing-their-title-to-resident-doctors #NHS #healthService #UKpolitics #BMA
