  5. During the later stages of World War II and until 1950, millions of Germans and German-speaking persons fled or were expelled from various Eastern and Central European areas. It was the largest transfer of any single ethnic population in European history.

The German population east of Oder-Neisse was estimated at over 11 million in early 1945. The first mass flight of Germans followed the Red Army's advance.

Suffering cleanses only when it is free of resentment. Wholehearted contempt for our tormentors safeguards our soul from the mutilations of bitterness and hatred.

  13. This is #brilliant (from Democratic Socialists of America USA)

“I used to wonder how it was possible that Trump could have won in 2016, and then again in 2024, given how emotionally #toxic and depraved he is.

“I don’t wonder anymore. I think he won for that exact reason. Because he carried at least one broken shard to reflect the broken shards in millions of others.

“If you’re a racist, you found your guy. If you’re a misogynist, you found your guy. If money is your only religion, you found your guy. If your heart is armored shut, you found your guy. If you mock the disabled, you found your guy.

“If intelligence makes you insecure, you found your guy. If you’re a sexual predator, you found your guy. If you trade in #humiliation and #conspiracy and filth, you found your guy.

“If you’ve never done a single hour of emotional inventory, you found your guy. If you cheat, stiff contractors, #bankrupt your obligations, and call it savvy, you found your guy. If you lie as easily as you breathe, you found your guy. If cruelty feels like strength, you found your guy.

“If wh*** #grievance is your comfort food, you found your guy. If your ego is a black hole no title can fill, you found your guy. If #warmongering fuels your ego, you found your guy, If #empathy feels like weakness and #dominance feels like oxygen, you found your guy.

“If he’d only carried one or two of these pathologies, he might have been dismissed as just another loud, damaged man. But he carried a buffet of them.

“That was the appeal. Millions could locate themselves somewhere in the wreckage. They didn’t have to agree with all of it. They just had to recognize a piece of themselves in it.

“It was never really about him. It was about the #Validation. The #absolution. The #permission. He didn’t invent the #resentment he amplified it. He didn’t create the #cruelty he #normalized it. He gave millions the #intoxicating relief of hearing their ugliest #impulses echoed back at rally volume.”

  14. This is the #primaryschool I attended as a #child... any wonder I still, even as a #teacher and professional #educator, I still feel a deep #suspicion, #objection, #resentment, and extreme #aversion regarding #school? I feel triggered every time I walk by, and notice, that not much has changed since I attended, around four decades ago. Sadly, this is not uniquely a German issue. Though, the primary schools I passed in #Barcelona were by far the most inviting.

  15. A quotation from Marcus Aurelius

Tell yourself, when you feel exasperated and out of all patience, that this mortal life endures but a moment; it will not be long before we shall one and all have been laid to rest.

  16. A quotation from Samuel Johnson

Yet it is certain, likewise, that many of our miseries are merely comparative: we are often made unhappy, not by the presence of any real evil, but by the absence of some fictitious good; of something which is not required by any real want of nature, which has not in itself any power of gratification, and which neither reason nor fancy would have prompted us to wish, did we not see it in the possession of others.

  19. A quotation from The Bible

In the meantime the older son was out in the field. On his way back, when he came close to the house, he heard the music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him, “What’s going on?”
“Your brother has come back home,” the servant answered, ‘and your father has killed the prize calf, because he got him back safe and sound.”
The older brother was so angry that he would not go into the house; so his father came out and begged him to come in. But he spoke back to his father, “Look, all these years I have worked for you like a slave, and I have never disobeyed your orders. What have you given me? Not even a goat for me to have a feast with my friends! But this son of yours wasted all your property on prostitutes, and when he comes back home, you kill the prize calf for him!”
“My son,” the father answered, “you are always here with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be happy, because your brother was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.”

  20. What to do if bullying? Try consistent boundaries

    1. do not writhe or waver. (Movement attracts the bully)
    2. do not attempt to appease. (Any offer is interpreted as weakness and obtains thrust)
    3. flee to a safe position that you could hold with support
    4. then stand still. Set limits on how others treat you. Affirm boundaries (The bully will redirect attacks eventually)
    5. connect: turn to a trusted person, reach out only to someone you feel well about
    6. offer backing, foster, become accomplice, enjoy
