Hello again on #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday !
Today, I have scheduled a guidance session with/ a researcher wanting to learn more about #Transkribus. They're planning on having a more significant number of archival and other documents automatically transcribed and are looking for options.
In the afternoon, I will briefly introduce @tropy, a tool for #Organising, #Annotating, and #Searching in your collections of photographs of archival documents and similar things. -
Today's #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO is mainly scheduling guidance sessions for the following weeks!
That's quite alright; I got to have lunch w/ my colleagues & answered questions regarding @zotero & how to get #OCR'ed reference lists into #Zotero using #AnystyleIO https://anystyle.io/.
We talked about the new #SustainableDSEs network.
I finalised and distributed a job offer for a research assistant to help me finish the bilingual #DigitalScholarlyEdition of the #EthicaComplementoria. -
Good morning! It looks like today is my last work day this year, not by choice, but by Covid, which now has befallen yet another family member...
Anyways! Thanks for listening in on my ramblings about #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO, #EthicaComplementoria and #NorKorr. I promise some cool stuff for 2024 and frequent posts with a new hashtag #BærUt #SustainableDSEs
Seasonal greetings and a happy new year. Back in #January! -

🧵 2/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO For the spring, I have been invited to co-teach a BA class on #EarlyModern #EnvironmentalHistory
I will introduce data management & use #Zotero & #Tropy for managing bibliographical data and digitised documents.
At a later point, I will guide students through a workflow of #AutomaticTextRecognition w/ #Transkribus to translation w/ #UniOslo #ChatGPT4. We will look into biases and snares when it comes to using these tools for working with/ historical sources. -
Good morning! Today from Lund, Sweden, where I will talk about my work with #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO between the University of Oslo Library & the Dept. of Archeology, Conservation and History.
I will give a talk at the research seminar series for mediated culture and information: https://www.kultur.lu.se/en/research/seminar-series/research-seminar-for-mediated-culture-and-information/
I will also talk about #EmotionalLabour #CompetitionForResources, Norwegian academic peculiarities and how (or not) the library deals with these.
Will write it up in a blog post later! -
Good morning! This week is packed w/ exciting stuff before my 3rd #ResearchLeave this year. Today is dedicated to preparing presentations; on Tuesday, my #DigitalMethods team has its monthly meeting, then there's #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday & on Thursday, I present about #NorKorr #NorwegianCorrespondences; all the while, the #BugOrFeature symposium is happening at the #MuseumOfCulturalHistory #KHM. Friday, the @dhnb ##LaTeXProject template for the #BookOfAbstracts will be finished.

🧵 4/ And finally ending the #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday with a guidance session on how to integrate a digital component into a joint BA/MA course for the spring semester. After a couple of suggestions based on the content and the learning outcomes of the course, we ended up w/ trying #Recogito, a platform for #Annotation of all kinds of historical and other sources. Students will be working w/ #MedievalHistory from the #VikingAge and the #100YearsWar. Exciting!

🧵 1/ It's #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday again, and I will be available again at the Dept. of Archaeology, Conservation and History during the day. I don't have any guidance sessions scheduled yet, so I will see what the day brings!
I continue my work with transcribing the #EthicaComplementoria using #Transkribus #HTR - and send out another job offer in my project, this time #TEI related. I have 40-50 hrs left for a research assistant to quality check and adjust the encoding. -
🧵 2/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO While available for drop-in guidance, I try to catch up with the #Danish #EthicaComplementoria sub-project. My research assistant has moved on after doing a first round of proofreading all 328 pages and tagging layout and text features. I'm playing around with the @TEIConsortium #TEI export from #Transkribus, which is the next step in the project: Creating a clean, valid marked-up text to become the basis for the #DigitalScholarlyEdition and further work.

🧵 1/ The initiated already know what happens today, but do YOU? It's #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday! I started my day w/ a visit to the archaeologists, who are housed in a different part of the campus than the historians. I guided a researcher through setting up and exploring #Gephi for #NetworkAnalysis of #AncientGreek tombs (or the stuff therein). It will be part of a newly developed seminar for archaeology students. We talked #ContextOfDiscovery #DataModeling & basics of #HNA

🧵 3/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO Did I ever tell you how our midway evaluation went?
Well, it went splendidly! We agreed to continue the #MethodsPartnership between the University Library and the Dept. of Archaeology, Conservation & History until the end of 2024 at least. I will keep spending my #Wednesdays at the Dept. where I have an office. I also do methods/tools presentations during the weekly #DigitalMeetup sessions, held conjointly w/ the Dept. of Culture Studies & Oriental Languages. -
It's #Monday! This week will be busy! Starting w/a workshop selection meeting for the #DSDays Digital Scholarship Days at #UniOslo. Tomorrow, I present @tadirah #TaDiRAH at the Dept. of Archaeology, Conservation & History. Then it's #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday. On Thursday, the Dept. has a #DigitalHumanities conference. On #Friday I prep the 1st #BærtUt #Sustainable #DigitalScholarlyEditions workshop together w/ the Center for Ibsen Studies and colleagues from the Nordic Countries.

🧵 3/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO continues after lunch w/ my "adopted" colleagues from the #History section. I had a coordinating & getting-to-know meeting to set up some presentations and show-and-tell sessions for the Depts. #DigitalMeetup that happens every #Tuesday. I offered to do short sessions on #TaDiRAH, #Transkribus, #Tropy and #Tesseract during the fall. I'll use the 1678 #Danish translation of the #EthicaComplementoria as an example for #AutomatedTextRecognition of C17th books!

🧵 2/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO I often get asked about how to quickly search through (handwritten) archival documents. Depending on how many documents we are talking about, there certainly are quicker ways then reading them! But setting up a workflow for #Digitisation, #AutomaticTextRecognition #QualityAssurance aren't done quickly either! Accessible tools like #Transkribus can help a lot here, but they can't do magic. So: plan enough time for these tasks and don't expect 100% accuracy!

🧵 1/ It's #Wednesday, which means #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO at the Dept. of Archaeology, Conservation and History again! Today I will be in the History section, catching up on some questions I received via email and drafting a presentation of #TaDiRAH for an upcoming #DigitalMeetup.
-
🧵 3/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO It's a slow day; might be due to the examinations, where teaching researchers are occupied w/ grading and guiding students. It's also hot here in Oslo, and many avoid coming to the office if they can work better at home or the cabin.
In the meantime, I am preparing my upcoming #ResearchLeave. My main focus is on drafting the #DataPaper for the #EdvardMunch #Correspondence #Metadata we created from the #DigitalScholarlyEdition https://emunch.no/welcome.xhtml -
🧵 2/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO On Monday, I visited the Archeological Library https://www.ub.uio.no/english/libraries/uhs/ark/index.html. It's located off campus, in the city centre, across the street from the #CulturalHistoryMuseum #KHM & covers subjects such as archaeology, conservation and Medieval art. It shares the building with #KHM and the Dept. of Archeology, Conservation and History with workshops for conservators.
-
🧵 1/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday today - and the last time before the summer. I will spend the morning in the history section of the Dept. and the afternoon in the archaeology section. And I will write about #Monday when I visited the archaeological library and the conservation section downtown, across the street from the #CulturalHistoryMuseum #KHM
-
It's #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO #Wednesday again! I sneak-started yesterday by presenting @Gephi and #GephiLite during the Department of Archeology, Conservation and History's #DigitalMeetup. For participants to get started, I used the datasets provided by @proghist lesson Exploring and Analysing Network data with Python https://programminghistorian.org/en/lessons/exploring-and-analyzing-network-data-with-python and then showed basic functionality & visualization possibilities in #Gephi.
Let's see what else is coming in today! -
#Friday
This week was a bit odd; it was short, and I was not in my office for two of the four days. Next week will be tightly packed w/ meetings and more #collaboration outside of the #UniversityLibrary: I will be at the National Library of Norway's DH Lab on Monday and at the Dept. of Archeology, Conservation and History on Wednesday with #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO. There are also some news regarding #DHOslo and #DHNBLAM, so stay tuned!
Enjoy the weekend friends – -
🧵 4/ Many researchers are not trained in data modelling and database building; however, data modelling is integral to working with any data, in my opinion. As is making a #DataManagementPlan and keeping a #Log to support documentation, memory, collaboration, and trouble shooting! #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO
-
🧵 7/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO Lastly, I spread the Gospel of Zotero and converted two, if not three, new disciples who want to move from #Endnote to #Zotero. I shared a step-by-step guide with them and made myself available for guidance if and when need be.
One aspect of my #DigitalResearchActivities support and guidance is general help with applications that cause great frustration and annoyance, like #MicrosoftTeams and how to use it across organisations. Great to have been of help! -

🧵 2/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO The story continues: I talked w/ a researcher who wants to do historical network analysis. HNA has always interested me, and I am happy to suggest some workflows and tools. I would like to see more people at #UniversityOfOslo use #Gephi or #GephiLite and the #DigitalScholarshipCenter at the #Library organising workshops and guidance. Perhaps I will get a chance to continue my work on the #InnsbruckEasterplay from 1392 using #NetworkAnalysis!

🧵 2/ #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO
I had an interesting discussion w/ a researcher working on an overview of digital skills at the Dept. Especially how to approach such an overview. They used the five typical phases of the research process by #TheProgrammingHistorian: ACQUIRE, TRANSFORM, ANALYZE, PRESENT, SUSTAIN. I introduced them to #TaDiRAH taxonomy of digital research activities in the humanities & how this could help to classify further & sort the different digital activities. Good work! -
Addendum to 🧵 #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO On Monday this week, I held my guest lecture for master students of #History again, called "Digital Research Methods for Historians". I started giving this lecture in spring 2018 and have been repeating it every semester since. I usually talk about digital source material (mainly Norwegian) and show some tools, like #Mirador #IIIFViewer #Transkribus #Voyant #CATMA #Recogito #HypothesesBlog and the Norwegian National Library's API and apps.
-
🧵 2/2 #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO 📷 In the fall, the library's Digital Scholarship Center will offer a hands-on digitisation & data organisation workshop for the Dept. Tentative title: "From analogue document to searchable text."
📜 Individual support for #Transkribus #HTR, esp. training a baseline model for layout recognition of #Latin #Incunabula /w several columns, commentary, marginal notes, rubrics, initials, ornaments.
🤝 Meeting about how to support historical subjects at the library.
