We're 10 days out from Research Software Asia Australia (RSAA26), Research Software Africa (RSAfrica26) and Research Software Latinoamérica (RSLA26) - and - registrations close in 4 days - until the 19th of August - along with scholarships (free tickets) for those who need support.
These scholarships (free tickets) are available people who are:
• unemployed,
• undergraduate students,
• Masters or PhD students,
• in precarious employment,
• financially pressured,
• lack conference presentation opportunities,
• don’t have a credit card to purchase tickets,
• have had a career transition or gap,
• are underrepresented in their field,
• have caring duties, or
• feel uncomfortable asking supervisors for funding.If you don’t fit neatly into these categories but face other barriers to attendance, we encourage you to apply as we’re here to support you.

#BritishGeologicalSurvey swapped from ESRI to #QGIS for field data capture last year. With in-house developers, we could write a Python plugin to do exactly what we want and the licence allows us to share with whomever we want. ArcGIS Field Maps were too simplistic and locked-in. #ResearchSoftwareEngineer movement means Universities increasingly have developers, too. 1/n

I have updated a draft of the RCP Internship Discovery Program Welcome slides for Summer 2025/2026.
It is more aligned with the fact that our most successful interns are organised, communicate well and ask lots of questions.
I also tried to fit in how university projects are not as complex as standard workplace projects, and our projects are even more complex than that.

Scholarship eligibility will be determined by our commitment to prioritising and maximising inclusion and participation for individuals impacted by the cumulative effects of discrimination—across dimensions such as race, gender, disability, gender identity, financial status and their intersections. Accessibility micro-grant eligibility follows the same guiding principles, and is open to participants based in Asia and Australia.

If you are interested in presenting your work at RSAA25 in 17–19 September, remember we’ve extended the Call for Presentations to 22 June and the Accessibility Fellow applications close Thursday the 19th of June.
It’s a great opportunity to present your work in research software, remotely and at low cost, all in an Asian/Australian-friendly timezone.
The conference runs entirely online, across three half-days in the afternoons (Melbourne time). There’ll be talks, workshops, and a dedicated community-focused third day.
The maximum registration fee is $30 AUD, but lots of free tickets will be available to keep things accessible. Would love to see you there or feel free to pass it on to others who might be interested!

We’re excited to announce the 𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗔𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.
This initiative is designed to encourage individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, have low vision, or have other disabilities to join us as we prepare for RSAA25 - helping to ensure our online event is as accessible and inclusive as possible.
Given that some members of our organising committee are blind or have low vision, we will prioritise applicants who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have other types of disabilities, to help bring even greater diversity of experience to our accessibility work.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗔𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹:
- Attend RSAA25 with a free ticket
- Share their insights by posting during #RSAA25 on Mastodon (if they wish)
- Create a short, open-access blog or report after the eventThe successful fellow will receive an initial payment before the event and a final payment once the report is published.
Deadline for applications is 2am UTC Thursday the 12th June 2025
Results of the application will be provided on the 27th of June 2025

@dams we hired two research software engineers and they were clearly the top two from the applications. I had already worked with one and we had a good recommendation from the other and hired them without a technical exam.
They were both fantastic: one has moved on and the other one's moving into more of a leadership role, which is great to see.

Hello! I suddenly find myself needing a job... yesterday!
I'm an experienced software and research engineer with a load of data science skills; I've worked on profiling and tracing MPI/OpenMP programs, supercomputer simulations, C++ debugging (including tracing MPI race conditions! fun!), statistical analysis of chemical simulations, web service API/work, some front end, etc. I've written/debugged/worked on projects in C, C++, TypeScript, C#, Python, shell, and dabbled in Rust. I'm able to jump on any project and learn quickly. I love working in supercomputing!
I'm putting together my resume but if you know if anyone looking for someone to hire, here I am! I'm open to contract and temporary positions, too, so long as they're remote. I'm in Portland, OR, in the US.

Thinking on a great story I heard recently: it’s time to compute impact metrics at a well known and respected Australian research institution. So the job gets handed to a Research Software Engineer to scrape the data and churn out a plot of the metrics.
