Sounds like #researchED won't attract many good speakers then.
Wrong. They have over 130 speakers across over 20 rooms and six sessions in each room. These are a mix of researchers, teachers and professionals. Having everyone on the same playing field stops any snobbery of keynotes there just to push their book. 'Big Names' (who normally headline an event) find their audience is shared so have to work just as hard as anyone else giving a presentation.
No fee. No keynote. No special treatment.
Yet they queue up to apply to speak because this is the event where they can speak to/with the people reading their books. -
But if #researchED is on a Saturday doesn't that put people off going?
Far from it. Teachers are busy teaching Mon-Fri so holding a conference for them on a Saturday suits most. Teachers volunteering to attend an education event on their day off without getting paid sounds like a recipe for failure. Instead it is a filter, with only the keen teachers wanting to attend.
Which they do! Indeed it sells out every year. -
What is #researchED?
Well, it is a grass roots lead education conference focusing on putting research based practice into the classroom. Most other education conferences are highly sponsored corporate events, for men in suits, on weekdays in event venues. #rED26 is for teachers, on a Saturday and in a school. It is an event for the doers and not the upper managers. -

Jag klarar bara engelska, men för rätt många år sedan slutade jag köpa engelska böcker i översättning och när jag hjälpt till med och varit med och startat #researchED Scandinavia här i Sverige har det blivit så att de flesta av mina kontakter på soc media också tillhör den kretsen av skolfolk, skoltwitter eller edutwitter till att börja med. Nu här och på BlueSkye.
