@pedersen If you can get yourself a small external SSD, your installs will go MUCH faster. Flash drives are SLOW.
I have a 1TB external SSD with 2 partitions: 1 for Ventoy and 1 for backups. I put my OS ISOs into the Ventoy partition, along with the Rescuezilla ISO. This way I can quickly back up any computer to the same SSD I'm installing Linux from. Makes distro-hopping and backups a breeze.
@g0nz4 But before I go trying something radically new, I always clone the entire SSD with #Rescuezilla in case I completely blow things up.

Irgendwie wundert mich bei RescueZilla das sich das Backup nicht auch gleich automatisch verifizieren läßt? Muss man scheinbar immer manuell machen... Clonezilla macht das direkt, wenn man es möchte.

@lies_das Wir bestehen darauf, dass die Gäste vorher Backups machen. Für einmalige Komplett-Backups empfehlen wir #Rescuezilla.
Wenn die Gäste unbedingt Dualboot wollen, machen wir das möglich. Dann schreiben wir in die /etc/fstab eine Zeile, die die Windows-Partition unter Linux mountet.
Wenn das neue Gnu/Linux den ganzen Laptop nutzen darf, haben die Gäste ihre Daten meist auf einer externen Festplatte oder einem USB-Stick. Wenn sie die im Dateimanager sehen und sich automatisch Programme öffnen, die ganz ähnlich wie die Windows-Programme aussehen, ist bei den Umsteigenden die Freude und das Staunen groß. /c

Die ersten @Datenpunks sind schon auf dem Weg zur Bürgerwache auf dem #Siggi, dem Herzen des Westens von #Bielefeld. Manche haben Malerkrepp und Stifte für die Namensschilder der Helfenden dabei, andere Mehrfachsteckdosen oder Vernetzungstechnik. Ich bringe 20 USB-Sticks mit. Von denen lassen sich verschiedene Gnu/Linux-Distributionen und Desktops starten, und zwar diese:

Für den Fall, dass etwas schief geht, sind auch ein paar Rettungssysteme auf den Multi-Boot-Sticks (#grml, #systemrescue, #supergrub, #bootrepair) und #rescuezilla für Backups. Die Datensicherung solltet ihr allerdings schon vorher gemacht haben, denn dafür wird die Zeit in der Bürgerwache nicht reichen.
Anlass dieser Popup-Werkstatt ist das Ende von Windows 10. Ihr wisst ja hoffentlich alle, dass ihr Windows 10 nicht mehr benutzen solltet, denn seit dem 14.10.2025 gibt es dafür keinen Support mehr, also auch keine Sicherheitsupdates. (Wer Microsoft seine persönlichen Daten schenkt, bekommt eine Gnadenfrist von einem Jahr.) Windows 11 lässt sich auf vielen Laptops nicht installieren, obwohl sie noch einwandfrei sind. Auf fast allen lässt sich Gnu/Linux installieren, und damit werden sie so schnell und sicher sein wie noch nie. Eure Windows-Dateien könnt ihr auch unter Linux öffnen – wenn nicht lokal, dann in einer Web-App.
TL;DR Teil 1 Vorbereitung
1. #Ventoy USB-Stick erstellen und ISOs von #RescueZilla und der Linux-Distribution drauf kopieren.
2.. Master-PC einrichten
(Das ist das System, das geklont werden soll)
2.a Linux von USB-Stick booten, und auf Master-PC installieren, aktualisieren
2.b Sämtliche gewünschte Software auf dem Master installieren und Systembenutzer einrichten
3. Master-PC mit Rescuezilla auf Ventoy USB-Stick sichern
@wortezimmer #rescuezilla funktioniert auch auf FAT32 / NTFS (und weiteren?) Dateisystemen. Diese Software ist auch eine gute Wahl für die Datensicherung! 👍 Dann würde ich extFAT oder NTFS nutzen, um die Festplatte unkompliziert auch mal an einen Windows Rechner nutzen zu können.
Bei vergangenen BackupPartys haben wir plattformübergreifend (vor Jaaaaaaahren🧓 ) auf #Duplicati für regelmäßige Sicherungen gesetzt, waren damit aber wegen vieler kleinerer Macken nicht glücklich. Hat sich da was getan? Dass die einzig gepflegte Version 2 der Software auch als Beta markiert war, sorgte auch nicht für Grundvertrauen.
Für Komplettsicherungen haben wir damals auf #Redobackup und #Clonezilla gesetzt. Hier nutzen wir inzwischen das bewährte #Rescuezilla (quasi-Nachfolge von Redo).

A quick backup with #Rescuezilla onto an external SSD and I can bare-metal any distro I want (and have all my stuff available via #Nextcloud ). When I’m done, a quick restore and it’s like I never left.
I put the Rescuezilla ISO on my Linux distro #Ventoy SSD that has a separate backup partition. That way, I can backup, install, & restore all from one drive.

#RescueZilla is a beginner-friendly tool to backup, image, clone, restore and resize all sorts of disks from e.g. a bootable usb-thumbdrive. 👍
📈 It is under active development and based on #CloneZilla (among others) and #GPartEd.
👌 Especially useful together with #Ventoy.
(ℹ️ Windows users mind that it does not support bitlocker encrypted #partitions).

Für alle anderen, die gerne rumprobieren, gäbe es da noch Netboot.xyz (https://netboot.xyz/). Einfach alle möglichen Linux Distros, nahezu blitzschnell, aus dem Netzwerk booten (PXE). Mit Anleitung sogar Windows. Benutze ich recht häufig auch für RAM Analysen oder Secure Erase Zeug. Da gibts eigentlich alles, was man sich so vorstellen kann: DBan, Arch Linux, CentOS, clonezilla, FreeBSD, GParted, Kali, Proxmox, Rescuezilla, ShredOS, ... uvm.
