  1. Thoughts and concerns are extended this weekend for all cats (and dogs) and their families in the US because of the massive snow storm. While our little cat and dog family is on the outer bottom edge of the bad weather, those just slightly north of us are going to have a rough few days. Good luck!

  6. After almost a year, we have finally had our house repaired after Hurricane Helene. Our special needs cats now have their room back. They have three smaller windows now instead of the original one large window. More window seats are installed, as are some more solar lighting installed outside in the yard so they can enjoy their view at night.

The room is somewhat empty at the time of the photo. Toys, beds, and trees are now in there.

  8. Yet another Pong update for December... The Yule holiday found him in slight distress for observed potty issues. On December 26, we hurried him over to the veterinary center just as they opened.

We are "frequent fliers" at the vet, so we tend to get quickly worked in as needed. So, Pong was dropped off for his situational evaluation. We knew he was in good hands.

Shortly after arriving back home, we received the call that Pong needed sedation and an emergency enema. Obviously, we agreed. Yeah, an emergency cat enema. The poor boy was severely impacted and would not have passed that stool on his own (TMI, I know, sorry).

Anyway, he survived and is back home with a prescription laxative (I cannot make this stuff up).

Anyway, Pong has had a most traumatic year. Hopefully, 2025 will be better for him.

  13. Catching up with Pong, the little fella somehow sustained a hip injury/congenital defect we encountered just prior to Hurricane Helene. In preparation for his scheduled surgery, we had picked up some pain meds the day before the hurricane hit. Well, the hurricane left the clinic without power for almost a week. Fortunately, we had enough pain meds to cover until power was restored.

Pong had his hip surgery, which saved his leg, but he now will always walk with a limp. Caring for him at home when we had no electricity was a challenge, but we made sure he was comfortable.

  15. Continuing...

It was a rough night until daylight. Winds maybe stopped around 4;00 or 5;00 in the morning. At daylight, I made my way outside to check on all of our outside cats. Their cat houses were turned over, and their boxes were out in the yard. All cats, inside and outside, were in distress.

I began counting tails and found everyone was accounted for. Everyone was traumatized, especially when the generator was pulled out and turned on.

20 days is basically three weeks with no power/internet. We made it through with no major disasters. All cats were safe,

Now, Skittle and Cutie usually sleep in their cat tree, which is in front of the window. This night, Skittle had received a new scratcher pad, and Cutie had taken over a box near the door. Fortunately, they were not in the cat tree as it was destroyed by the fallen real tree. The window was shattered and glass was everywhere. If they had been in the cat tree, they would have been injured.

We were more concerned for our cats than all the thousands of dollars worth of computer and networking equipment in that room. We scooped up the cats and moved them to secure-ish areas. The electronics would come secondary.

Skittle and Cutie were relocated to the TV Room with Rose and Pong. to hopefully be secure enough to ride out the hurricane winds/tornadoes..

While outside on the back porch, I noticed the winds were much stronger than normal. I then began to hear cracking/popping noises in the darkness beyond my flashlight. Having heard this sound before, I knew there were trees snapping. I immediately returned inside.

I began rounding up the cats that were not already in the master bedroom (in distress) and attempted to get them secure.

Minutes later, there was a large thud which shook the house. My husband, who was in the TV Room comforting two other special needs cats was already in the hallway when I got there.

We both opened the door to the office to find a massive tree in the middle of the room. Wind was whipping around and the rain was coming into the room. Skittle and Cutie were were uninjured, and we immediately rescued them from the room.

  25. Trying to catch up...

So, yeah, it was 20 days offline with no power or internet. Some of my neighbors still have no power due to damaged homes and private poles/weather heads that an electrician is required to service.

Updating on the cats who have weathered the storm: Skittle (handicapped with one eye and limited vision) and Cutie (11 years old) were in the office during the hurricane. They normally stay in the office with a cat tree and a view of the outside front yard through the large window. I had just checked on them at about 3:00 AM and they were fine. The power had gone offline and always happens during storms.

I stepped out on the back porch to kinda get a feel for what was going on. Our hurricane issues are usually just a little wind and some small amounts of rain. That night, it was not anywhere near our usual "bad weather."

  30. Rose Update: Luckily, Rose did not require another blood transfusion since her crisis situation was caught in time.

She responded quite well to an increase of her medication while she was in the hospital. Happily, she is now back home and enjoying her weekend with her brothers and sisters.

Many thanks to everyone who has sent her well-wishes.

  32. Rose Update: On Monday night, I came in from work to find Rose, as usual, sitting on the Keurig waiting for me to return home. When I picked her up, she was very unsteady, glassy-eyed, and extremely warm in temperature.

I immediately gave her an extra dose of her medication, and then I held her in my arms near the AC unit until her fever broke around midnight. She slept on my pillow the rest of the night.

Tuesday morning, we were at the vet's office when they opened the door. Rose was quickly taken back to be evaluated. I left her there in capable hands. She was required to be admitted to the hospital for a few days.
