Hugh Cook's excellent: Chronicles of an Age of Darkness, finally have new editions after languishing in copyright limbo for decades.
Cook plays with genre tropes, mixing adventure, satire and humor, elements that help these books transcend the limits that make so many other works of the 80s and 90s feel so dated.
The fan group that published them have made the effort to offer them at venues other than Amazon.
You can get them DRM free while supporting local book shops at BookShop.org:

NJ ICE Agent: Amir Zayed of North Jersey
Republished From The Toto Report
Last week a gang of NJ ICE agents went viral in Jersey City, NJ when they were filmed abducting several people off the streets. When asked by the person filming if they had a warrant for any of the people they were kidnapping one agent yelled “We don’t need a warrant bro”. In a later portion of the video this same agent can be seen roughing up one of the people he is in the process of kidnapping. This agent has now been positively identified as Rutgers University graduate Amir Zayed.
NJ ICE agent Amir Zayed. The video of Zayed and the other NJ ICE agents went viral for a reason, it is shocking, and their level of colonialistic violence cannot be ignored. In the video, Zayed appears to be in a position of authority, and his level of arrogance shows he views himself and other ICE agents as untouchable.
A screenshot of Zayed from the recent viral video.
Another screenshot from the recent viral video. In this section of the video Zayed is harassing the person filming.Zayed has also been spotted in Hackensack, NJ with other ICE agents, abducting New Jersey residents.
Screengrabs from a month ago, during an ICE raid in Hackensack, NJ.Amir Zayed is a 33 year old ICE agent originally from North Bergen, NJ. Zayed, who is a child of immigrants, is of mixed Arab (Egyptian) and Latino heritage and graduated from North Bergen High School in 2010. Zayed expressed interest in becoming a police officer since he was a teenager, and after high school he attended Rutgers University and received a degree in criminal justice.
Zayed quoted in a Rutgers student publication during his studies, stating “I completely disagree with how the cops (Norwegian) are not allowed to hold guns. As a future cop, here in the U.S. I think when it comes to national security cops everywhere need to be alert and ready about the safety of our country and of our people, so we must deal with these and any possible threats immediately and efficiently. It’s just the way the world works today”.Zayed’s above quote is unsurprising, given how he relishes terrorizing the different immigrant communities of New Jersey with a gun.
Upon his graduation from Rutgers University Zayed pursued a career in federal law enforcement and has been in the field for around a decade. It’s not clear when Zayed moved over to ICE but he has been seen over the last few months harassing immigrant communities in North Jersey.
Amir Zayed as a young adult and as a child.Amir Zayed is a danger to NJ residents and must be stopped. He cannot be allowed to destroy communities and attack our neighbors.
The following information is being released in an effort to protect NJ residents and hold ICE accountable:
Amir Zayed
- Birthday May 16, 1992
- Last known addresses are in Lyndhurst, NJ and on Walnut Street in Elizabeth, NJ but has connections to North Bergen, NJ.
- Has a FaceBook profile under the name Ayemiare ZeeayewhyDee, which has been verified,
- He has a serious interest in cars as a hobby and is believed to be involved in the NJ custom car scene.
- He is believed to have Sprint mobile as his current cell phone carrier.

Local Streamer Frank Scales Exposed For Lying By Police Scanner
Republished From Philly Fash Watch
Philly has a new entry in the right wing rage bait streamer category, 23 year old Frank Scales. This is a very brief introduction to Frank; something more comprehensive will come soon from this blog. For now we’ll just expose Frank Scales lying about a recent incident. On Saturday January 10th Frank posted a video from his Surge Philly accounts spread across social media platforms of himself in an ambulance. Doing his best Andy Ngo impersonation, Frank Scales states “we don’t know if there’s bleach in it. We don’t know what they put in the solution that they sprayed at me”.
After Franks video was posted an anonymous source sent us a recording of police scanner communications regarding the incident. The scene commander from the Philadelphia Police Department is acknowledging that Frank was sprayed by his own side!
We can go even further and state that it wasn’t just random assholes from Franks side using pepperspray in the peaceful crowd, it was Franks cameraman who sprayed his face. More to come on that individual.
Francis J. Scales, 23, of South Philly on Front Street is a Temu version of people like Jack Posobiec and Nick Shirley. There is nothing good that can come from Frank being in protest spaces. Remove him immediately so you don’t become content for his social media rage bait. We protect us.

NJ Hate Watch: New Evidence Further Cements Jonathan Misura as a Neo Nazi
Republished From Philly Fash Watch
In August 2024, NJ Hate Watch, exposed 18 year-old Jonathan Misura of Milltown, NJ as a neo nazi, with membership in groups like NJEHA and the now defunct S14. New photo evidence has now come to light, concretely proving Misura’s identity as a neo nazi.
Misura, pictured wearing a white colored button down shirt. A close up of Misura, in the center, standing next to “vulgar” on the left, and fellow nazis Andrew Takhistov on the right and Dan D’Ambly on the far right.Misura is pictured in the above photo with other S14, Embrace Struggle Active Club, and NJEHA members Dan D’ambly, convicted sex offender Ben Ryder, the now imprisoned Andrew Takhistov, S14 leader Mark Kauffman, and other unidentified neo nazis, including “Vulgar”. The photo, which was originally uploaded with nazi themed stickers over their faces, was taken in December of 2023, when the group was honoring a dead nazi.
The original photos of Misura from December 2023 with his fellow nazi buddies.Without the nazi sticker hiding his identity, Misura can unmistakably be seen throwing up a “sieg heil”. His features and stature stand out, matching his profile at the time as a bone headed High School Senior.
Misura circa December 2023.Misura was best friends with neo nazi Andrew Takhistov, who is pictured standing next to Misura on the right in the December 2023 photo. The two were very close until they were both entrapped by the state in a plot to blow up a New Brunswick electrical substation in July, 2024.
An excerpt from Takhistov’s arrest details which alludes to Misura as “Individual 1”.As the undercover federal agent stated in his report, Takhistov and another person, “Individual 1”, who has been independently verified to be Jonathan Misura, met up with him to discuss plans to blow up an electrical substation in New Brunswick. Takhistov and Misura also planned a trip to Ukraine in July 2024 which the undercover agent detailed, to fight alongside far right Ukrainian Nationalists against the Russian invasion. Right before they were able to execute their trip to Ukraine, Takhistov was arrested and has been in federal detention ever since. Misura was not arrested and escaped prosecution/all potential legal consequences for reasons unknown.
Since August 2024, Misura has attended East Stroudsburg University (ESU), completing his Freshman year and retaining his scholarship and placement on the school’s baseball team.
Jonathan Misura’s ESU baseball profile.Misura, who is now a Sophomore, has been leaning into baseball, joining a collegiate baseball team, the Syracuse Salt Cats, as a pitcher in the off season. The Syracuse Salt Cats are sponsored by Major League Baseball (MLB) and several past players have been scouted into MLB. Misura, who has clearly been emboldened by the lack of consequences, is now interested in pursuing a shot with the MLB. Evidence of which can been seen from the website he created to try and get his name out further in the baseball sphere and attract MLB attention.
Misura’s website, which omits his nazi ideology.Reports from those on ESU’s campus have found Misura to be racist and combative to non-white students, in the classroom and on the baseball diamond. Reports from his time with the Salt Cats show that Misura actively harasses Jewish team members. With Misura still a neo nazi and not hiding it, one has to wonder why he has been allowed to abuse his fellow students without consequence.
Misura poses a danger to his fellow University students and the larger community. He must be held responsible for his actions. Concerned community members are encouraged to reach out to his school administration directly, the Syracuse Salt Cats coaching staff, and ESU’s athletics department with the following script. (This article and NJ Hate Watch’s original article can be linked as evidence of Misura’s actions).
“Hello I am reaching out to contact you about an ESU student named Jonathan Misura. He is a Sophmore who is on a baseball scholarship. Misura is a self-professed Neo-Nazi and racist. I have provided the following evidence which displays Misura’s actions and identity as a neo nazi. Misura’s behavior violates both NCAA rules and regulations (applicable to both the Syracuse Salt Cats and ESU) and East Stroudsburg University’s Student Athlete Handbook (its Sportsmanship Policy). His behavior specifically violates current the NCAA Division II Handbook and, the 3.3.1.3 Standards and 3.3.4.5 Standards.
As a student athlete Misura is supposed to embody the values and codes governing the Syracuse Salt Cats and East Stroudsburg University. I would like to request a review of Jonathan Misura’s placement on the ESU and Syracuse Salt Cat’s baseball team and a review of his baseball scholarship. Thank you.”

Mark Kauffman’s Bad Behavior While Sara And Baby Were Dying
Republished From Philly Fash Watch
We’ve long since established that Mark Kauffman is a piece of shit. From his early days on our radar attempting to create a national socialist youth group called NSYA and S14, we’ve meticulously documented his actions. Because of our effective work, neither group exists anymore. Eat shit Mark. Here is where Mark was originally documented and doxxed, via a collaboration between Jersey Counter-Info and SunlightAFA NJ Hate Watch: S14’s Neo Nazi Leaders Mark Kauffman and Sara Sheaffer – Jersey Counter-Info.
As first noted on a gofundme, Mark’s wife Sara had a massive heart attack while pregnant. Sara had been Mark’s ride or die, from their days homeless in Massachusetts while abusing meth. In June of 2024 the two were supposed to be married but the event was raided by US Marshal’s the night before, as Mark had been a fugitive from Massachusetts for years on weapons and drug charges. No, not simple possession. 200+ grams of meth.
Due to Sara and the baby’s complications from birth, Mark’s trial has been delayed. The previous status hearing January 24, 2025 was delayed again until March 26, 2025. We suspect there will be no further delays and that his trial will finally begin. Co-Leader of Philly Area Nazi group, S14, Dies: Her Newborn Struggling On Life Support – Idavox
Mark and Sara lived in Kensington. If you’re familiar with the area, you know that nazis are not welcome. We made certain that their neighbors knew exactly what these two were about. After extensive flyering and community outreach, they fled their home and moved into Mark’s grandfathers home in Delaware. It should be noted that Mark does not have a valid driver’s license. This is about to become important to this terrible story.
There’s a wonderful program called The Ronald McDonald House, where families of sick patients at Penn Hospital and CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) are given free rooms to stay in while their loved ones are very ill. Family Rooms – RMHC Philadelphia Region. As I’m sure comes to no surprise to you, our dear reader, Mark Kauffman took advantage of this generous gift he was given. While his wife and baby were dying, Mark would go out drinking at night with his nazi buddies at bars in the area. This includes a nazi security guard at the hospital who we aren’t naming…yet (your time is limited). This article is strictly about Mark and how horrible of a human he is.
While going out drinking isn’t against the law, there’s something to be said about a man’s morals who chats up ladies while his wife and infant are dying. Eyewitness accounts flagged this behavior not just as the bars, but also when he brought them to his room at the Ronald McDonald House. He also brought his nazi buddies up there, where blowing lines of cocaine became his passion. Since Mark is unemployed (his nazi buddy Alex Chubbuck whom we wrote our first article as PhillyFashWatch about Nazi Alex Chubbuck of Boyertown, PA | Philly Fash Watch fired him because Alex is more concerned about his business than anything in the world) we can only assume that he was using money from the gofundme fundraiser to feed his nose candy addiction.
On the day of Sara’s death, Mark unsurprisingly went out to the bars again. Upon returning Mark was met at his room at the Ronald McDonald House, room 902, by security. Maintenance workers had responded to a plumbing issue in his room and found cocaine and white power crap. Mark was immediately kicked out of this charitable place for being a piece of shit (remind us if this sounds familiar). Forced to move back to his grandfather’s home in another state since he couldn’t return to Kensington and without a license we don’t know how he could visit his infant in the NICU unit.
Our hearts break for the baby. They didn’t deserve to be born to two wannabe fuhrers. Now that Mark Kauffman is alone, we need to discuss the arsenal of weapons that he has in Delaware at his grandfather’s home. Mark is a trained killer by the US military. He’s facing a long jail sentence for the drug and gun charges the US Marshal’s picked him up for in June. With that hearing no longer facing delays, all of us are fearful that Mark could be a mass shooter before that March 26th date. As always, fuck nazis. They will never feel peace as long as we’re around.

Co-Leader of Philly Area Nazi group, S14, Dies: Her Newborn Struggling On Life Support
Normally, “Sara Sheaffer-Kauffman, Rot In Hell” would be the headline greeting you. But we weren’t feeling it this time because—and ONLY because—of her baby Elle. Let’s not get this twisted. The only innocent in this disturbing neo-Nazi saga is the infant currently fighting for her life. Her drug-addled Nazi parents, who were founders and members of at least three fascist organizations in PA, are not getting sympathy from us.In June, neo-Nazi Storm Division (S14) founders Mark Kauffman and Sara Sheaffer tried to get married. Their wedding celebrations were interrupted because Mark, 32, was picked up at the venue by law enforcement. He had an outstanding warrant in Massachusetts for drug trafficking and weapons charges from six years ago. Kauffman managed to post bail and the couple wed, though in a much smaller ceremony. Six months later, Sara, 29, was dead.
Sara Kauffman’s death was announced on Jan. 12 on a GoFundMe campaign set up for her and her baby. She was 32 weeks pregnant Sept. 12 when she suffered a heart attack while driving Mark to work in South Philadelphia. After Mark flagged down a Black police officer, who immediately began CPR, Sara was transported to the University of Pennsylvania hospital. She then had a second massive heart attack, while the doctors performed an emergency c-section. Sara suffered massive brain damage, never woke up, and died on Jan. 6. Their baby has been in the hospital since the birth and intubated as doctors are working to save her life.
According to a July article, Sara and Mark were co-leaders of S14. This group is active on the social platform Telegram, encouraging pop-up style protests – surprise rallies – to avoid opposition, and vandalizing neighborhoods with Nazi stickers, spray paint and flyers. Sara can be seen in many photos participating in these events. S14 works closely and shares members with White Lives Matter PA, New Jersey European Heritage Association and the now defunct Embrace Struggle Active Club. Sara and Mark attended flash mob style demonstrations with all of these groups. They promoted their groups’ hate activities alongside these other groups. They recruited members such as convicted sex offender Ben Ryder, for demonstrations.
S14 with the NJEHA.Sheaffer and Kauffman holding a new S14 flag at an action in Easton PA with S14, NJEHA, Embrace Struggle Active Club, and other fascists. Sara is in the foreground. Both Mark, an Army veteran, and Sara were using hard drugs in 2018 and living in Massachusetts when there was an arrest warrant issued for him, after a shotgun, rocket launcher and methamphetamine were found in a storage unit in Hadley, Mass., that was connected to him. The couple fled to Philadelphia before he was arrested, after evading his legal troubles for years. In June 2024, wedding announcements and websites led authorities to finally catch up with him. Mark was arrested on the night before their wedding in the Airbnb they had rented for the occasion. The couple married in July 2024, after Mark posted bail.
Mark Kauffman is still out on bail. No further information about his case has been released.

Of COURSE Nazi Rally Against One People’s Project, Did Not Go Exactly As Planned!
Claudino G. Petruccelli when DLJ showed up.A NJ neo-Nazi organization, Atlantic Nationalist Club, run by an Uber Eats worker named Claudino G. Petruccelli, who is known for getting caught flat footed in his Nazi capers, could only get ten people to protest outside One People’s Project on Saturday night. But, that was not their only failing. Their plan to meet up at a diner in the next town over was learned by antifascists, including One People’s Project Executive Director Daryle Lamont Jenkins, and when they were confronted by antifascists at the diner, they left without even paying their tab according to workers.
Petruccelli, grew up in an affluent community whose family owns a construction company. In recent years he was the one-time leader of the New Jersey chapter of White Lives Matters, but after arrests, including his own in 2021, another group was created out of the ashes called the Atlantic Nationalist Club (AnaC).
AnaC’s original plan was to protest a church that Petruccelli believed connected to One People’s Project. Most of the ten who joined the protest came from other states. Two came from Pennsylvania, including Quintynn Stark from Lancaster, who has dreams of being a professional skateboarder. (Stark removed his Instagram page then simply made it private, but he can still be seen on the his sponsors PAIN! Skateboards’ page). He reportedly told his parents he was going to drive to a concert in York, Penn., and they didn’t know he was going to New Jersey to participate in a Neo-Nazi rally. Another group was from Staten Island and four came from Connecticut. Only three were from New Jersey, Petruccelli and two others.
Quintynn StarkThe Nazis gathered at the Edison Diner to wait for the Connecticut group to join. When antifascists arrived at the diner, Petruccelli grabbed an empty beer bottle and made threatening remarks to Jenkins and others. Within five minutes of antifascists’ arrival, the Nazis quickly left.
Antifascists waited for them to resurface until they learned that the AnaC members had retreated to a safe space. Petruccelli threw a temper tantrum and demanded to see everyone’s phone to see who had revealed their meetup location. It was almost 11 p.m. when they came to the One People’s Project office and by this time everyone was leaving. Jenkins ridiculed the group and the Nazis chanted for five minutes before leaving with the police following them as they walked to nearby Boyd Park where they have staged many photo ops.
No one was hurt or arrested Saturday night, and AnaC’s actions reflected a fad among hate groups in recent years—having flashmob style rallies to avoid having anyone opposing them. Trying to be clandestine hasn’t always worked for Petruccelli’s and other groups in New Jersey.
Petruccelli first met Jenkins in November 2021 in Princeton, New Jersey, when Petruccelli attempted to affix a White Live Matter sticker in one of the city’s busiest areas and was chased off. Two weeks later, Petruccelli was arrested along with two others when they again tried to post White Lives Matters stickers on sign posts in Somerville, NJ.
One of the two left soon after and reportedly joined another Nazi group called Blood Tribe. The other one, Steve V. Koshlyak is currently being held on charges that have not been made public since his arrest in July, just a few days after Andrew Takhistov was arrested on charges he was part of a plot to destroy a New Jersey energy facility. Takhistov is also an associate of Petruccelli. His friend Nick Mucci is also in jail for trying to attack a benefit show for One People’s Project in Asbury Park, N.J. He was sentenced in September to eight years after pleading out over the summer.

June of 2024 was a busy and dismal month for area nazi’s. There was the arrest of Mark Kauffman at his own wedding, multiple new identifications of local nazis by antifascists, and a small WLM day of action on June 15th in PA. Antifascists also noted a short female in a group picture from the June 15th action and clocked her as the same individual from a photo that S14 posted earlier in the month under the Love Park sign.As antifascists reviewed footage from the WLM action on June 15 it was discovered that there was footage of her with her mask off. The individual has now been identified as Scotlyn Elyse Schmitt of York, PA.
The photograph from Love Park revealed a connection to none other than Benjamin Ryder. In closed WLM chats, Ryder mentioned having a girlfriend several times, discussing her telegram usernames and her many “accomplishments”. Ryder provided additional context about his girlfriend and how he actually rejected her from WLM-PA previously when they first met over a year ago.
18 months ago, Lynn reached out to WLM-PA and wanted to be vetted and become a member. At the time Ryder was the admin for the state chapter. Ryder was in the middle of rocky patch with a different girlfriend at the time, and suspected Lynn of being this girlfriend’s sock account. Lynn was using her @RileyCat and @RileyPilled2.0 telegram accounts at the time. While Lynn was living in Pittsburgh, she attended the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School where she met members of WLM-OH and became friends. WLM-OH members were able to provide her with a vouch to join WLM-PA. Despite their vouch, Ryder was too paranoid to let her join the PA chapter. Ryder’s relationship issues eventually led to his ex-girlfriend revealing his paranoia, leading to his removal from WLM-PA for a time. Ryder was soon allowed back in the organization by the admin and defacto leader, Evan Plumlee. With this, Ryder was officially back in WLM-PA (telegram profile NAME- Max).
In the spring of 2024, Ryder and Scotlyn Schmitt officially met in person for the vetting process to begin. He informed her that her YouTube channel where she also used the “RileyPilled” username showed her face and could be traced back to her telegram account. In response, Lynn removed the matching telegram account as well as her YouTube channel which contained personal content like her school details.
With Lynn as a full WLM-PA member, Ryder gave membership details on her background. He informed them how Lynn was a member of Injekt Division, admins a few BTC channels on terrorgram, and admins a channel with the “the dildo saleswoman” Dallas Humber. Antifascists were able to confirm most of this information, largely from Lynn herself. Lynn posted a video of herself drunk sharing her telegram handles and posts she made in the WhiteNeighborhoodWatch channel. Screenshots from these videos have been provided as evidence. The videos have not been provided as Lynn does not deserve a platform.
Injekt Division and Terrorgram, the groups and virtual space that Lynn is a part of, are well known for their accelerationist ideology and patriarchal structure. Typically to join Injekt Division one has to be a white male, but notably, they made an exception to the rule for Lynn. This marks Lynn as a unique addition and how much Injekt Division values the reach she has to people like BTC and Brandon Russell and Dallas Humber. Lynn can be can found under her current Telegram profile @massrapist.
Another member of WLM-PA Mathew Bair, is also a self-confirmed member of Injekt Division. Matt Bair was recruited to Injekt after very publicly joining any group he could in the past two years . Although he failed many times (kicked from Blood Tribe soon after touching Pohlhaus’s stick, crashed his Harrisburg Proud Boy chapter, member of the defunct Embrace Struggle Active Club, part of the split between 2119- yes he was in a group with mostly minors), Matt has stayed consistent in his fedposting. Bair is the only known Injekt Division member openly showing his face in terrorgram spaces. There soon will be an update on what he’s been doing recently.
Recently arrested Andrew Takhistov, member of NJEHA and Atlantic Nationalist Club (wannabe NSC131 types who formed from WLM-NJ by Claudino Petrucelli ) was in some Injekt Division chats and channels using his @cossack18 telegram account. Although not a member of Injekt, he is someone who agreed with their worldview. As listed in the DOJ release, he wanted to take down power stations in New Brunswick. This is the type of worldview people like Lynn, Cossack, Bair and many others in the terrorgram spaces share.
Lynn and Ryder have been up to typical dumbass nazi activities, spray-painting a swastikas and posting Injekt Division stickers around Philadelphia. Not long after connecting in person, Lynn moved in with Ryder and their nazi activities escalated. Due to Ryder and Lynn’s escalations antifascists discovered their presence in PA and Ryder’s neighborhood was flyered exposing him as a registered sex offender on the Megan’s Law website. Reportedly, after Ryder’s neighborhood was flyered and an extensive dox was dropped, Lynn moved out quickly. Lynn is reportedly bouncing bouncing around living with different Injekt members
Scotlyn take this as a warning- you just turned 20, you don’t have to live like this. All of your friends end up in jail or dead. Reach out to us [email protected]

Lynn was using her @RileyCat and @RileyPilled2.0 telegram accounts at the time. from Bash Back
In 2008, queer anarchists gathered in Chicago to plot a disruption of the electoral spectacle and cohere a network out of emergent youth crews in multiple cities. Fifteen years later, the proposals put forward then — criminality, autonomous self-defense, riots, and orgies — are needed more than ever.
The intervening years have been marked by intensification — of crisis, alienation, loss, and struggle. The right wing no longer hides behind euphemisms: they want to exterminate trans and queer people. The left offers only false solutions: vote, donate, assimilate. A decade of representation, symbolic legal victories, social media activism, and mass-market saturation has left us worse off by all metrics. Our fairweather friends won’t save us from the consequences of their strategy of empty visibility. The inescapable conclusion is that we must come together to protect ourselves.
History confirms the queer legacy of building connection in a world that hates us, the legacy of riotous joy—the legacy of bashing back. The attacks will continue on our nightclubs, forests, story hours, and siblings. To hold on, we need spaces—underground if necessary—to re-encounter each other, spaces to remember, build, share, and conspire.
In this spirit, we are ecstatic to announce the return of the Bash Back convergence!
Fifteen years from the original gathering, Chicago will host the 2023 convergence September 8–11. Comrades, old and new, are invited to discuss what’s still vital in the past and what’s needed in the present. In keeping with tradition, the convergence will include presentations, workshops, distros, parties, and other opportunities to make trouble
If you are interested in attending, especially if you’d like to propose programming or tabling, please send an introduction to [email protected].
All Proposals due by June 20.

Dispatch from the Rutgers Encampment for Palestine
A report from a pro-Palestine union teacher at Rutgers.
By Jason Koslowski
“There is only one solution, intifada revolution!” “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” and “Gaza children, don’t you cry! The students here are at your side!” and “Whose streets? Our streets! Whose campus? Our campus!” We chant.Another encampment for Palestine has started. This one’s at Rutgers University’s New Brunswick campus where I’m an adjunct teacher. We marched across campus and took the streets. I was chanting next to one of my students, when we saw each other we were both grinning ear to ear.
Now I’m sitting at a beautiful encampment in the sun and shade typing. The sun just slipped behind clouds. An ice cream truck parked nearby so some of us are eating ice cream. My neck is sweating from the keffiyeh.
Rutgers — the largest public university in New Jersey with campuses in the north, south, and center of the state — is the latest university to join the fight for Palestine with an encampment. At Columbia, which has inspired so many, a hundred were arrested but others set right back up anyway; the same happened at NYU. There’s a camp at CUNY, UPenn, and at campuses across the country too. Encampments are even popping up around the world.
This one has been organized by Rutgers’ Students for Justice at Palestine and the Endowment Justice Collective. They’re amazingly mobilized; when SJP was suspended recently, the students organized, fought back, and won their reinstatement. This was accomplished through a campaign which united hundreds of other student organizations —many representing oppressed communities — behind the line “We are all SJP.” The wide support from different sectors of the student body was publicized on the SJP’s social media pages. The university had to back down, though they still wield “probation” of student activists as a threat.
The students organizing the camp put out some muscular demands a minute ago. They want Rutgers to divest from every company connected to Israel and its death machines; terminate a connection to Tel Aviv University; display the Palestine flag across campus; and more.
I’m sitting folding some Left Voice pamphlets to hand out. A grad student comes over and starts helping me. We talk about how big the camp is already and how important. Later, as I’m writing this, an undergrad sits next to me eating ice cream. I asked him what he thought of the new camp:
I think that the people here are just — amazing. I’ve never seen a movement this big, ever. It’s amazing we’re just a unit. We all have a single purpose, to Free Palestine. The kids of Palestine are being slaughtered. … Seeing the youth come out, they know more information than people who are way older than us. People who aren’t even from Palestine, never been to Palestine, are here supporting.
There’s barely any cops yet. They’re staying away, I think they’re spooked at how the repression of students at the point of batons wielded by heavily armed cops (and state troopers at UT Austin and Emory University) actually helped spread the revolt more. There are a good number of faculty here.
(Now two students are walking by asking: “Do you want chicken? You have a preference?” They’re holding a massive container of chicken fingers. They smell good.)
Just a minute ago my phone dinged because my union leaders here at Rutgers put out a pretty good statement. They defend the right of our students to speak out, their democratic right to protest. And they’re right that we have to surround these students with big numbers to protect them from more savage repression like at Emory, Columbia, USC, Emerson, Indiana University, and so many other schools that have unleashed cops on their students.
But the statement was disappointing too. Yes, surround the students. But their fight is our fight; we can and we should join the struggle fully, as part of the encampment. Call us all by the thousands into the student space!
But more than this: we’re workers; we make this university function by teaching and grading, just like the janitors keep it going by cleaning and the cooks by cooking. That means as workers, and as a union, we have a special weapon. Call us to do a picket, a work stoppage, even out on strike!
You can feel the resistance to this inside the letter from the union. And there’s a long history of unions trying to control from the top down the unruly power of the rank-and-file. So as a union, and in Faculty for Justice in Palestine, we’ll have to organize ourselves to get the union to put the full weight of all our resources into this struggle — workers and students united. We can organize ourselves to join the encampment. We’ll need some spaces to coordinate all of us and our fight against the cops and school bosses, to really organize worker and student power here to win our demands. We need assemblies, democratic and deliberative, to organize the encampment, discuss our problems together, and decide on a course of action to sustain the movement.
Another announcement, a Passover celebration is starting now.
The fight is raging, and workers and students united can win this battle.
Free, free Palestine!

Anonymous Submission to Jersey Counter-Info
Republished from gofundme:
On New Years Day 2024 Daryle Lamont Jenkins was admitted to a hospital in the New Jersey area, three days later and he is still there. Doctors have removed several blood clots and are now concerned with his kidneys. Daryle has been fighting for the cause of civil rights in the United States for well over a quarter of a century, traveling over the country at his own expense, giving help to all of us whenever we needed it- he now needs our help to heal.
I am writing this asking for your help. Daryle is going to need time to heal and get well, not get out of the hospital and get back to work- that may cause damage that there is no coming back from, so we are asking for funds that will help with rent and bills and food while he recuperates. Your generosity is appreciated it will allow him to continue this important work that too few people are willing to do on all of our behalf.
Update From Daryl on January 7, 2024
I figured I will be the one who updates this time. As you might know from some of the vids I have posted on social media, I’m home now. Next week, I will be talking with doctors to see what my next steps are because there needs to be alternatives to the treatment I have been getting and we need to pursue them. That’s not the only issue as before I had to deal with all the craziness of the past week, I had to make plans to get surgery on my hand because of some issues I have been having for a few months. So I am pretty much spending the next month or two doing doctor appointments and making sure things stay good. I should by the way note that due to the proximity of the two situations there might have been some confusion so let me note that me going to the hospital was unrelated to the accident with the train a few days prior. There were no injuries that day and only the car was hurt. Still, that is going to hurt me financially on a few levels which is why Luis suggested this GoFundMe in the first place. I’m glad he did because I was very down and stressed out these past few days and this effort took me out of that. I know I have said thank you before but frankly I can’t say it enough. So once again thank you and I will be out there with you all soon enough!

We wanted to make sure that our readers saw this. She needs help and needs it now.
Epona Rose is a woman of trans experience who was attacked on the street in Flagstaff by a group of three men while two more men watched.
The men were drunk and sexually harassing her in a way that was making her feel unsafe. The harassment escalated to threats of rape, and then to actual physical violence, when they realized she was transgender. Epona defended herself bravely against this attack and did not call the police. She was then punished for this when the cops arrived and arrested only her.
Epona is currently being held on the men’s side of Coconino County Detention Facility in segregation with one hour a day out of her cell, where she has struggled to gain access to her prescribed medications. Her current bond is set at $500,750 but we are fiercely working to overturn such an excessive bond amount and fear mongering charges. The longer Epona is in jail, the much more risk she is exposed to as a trans woman and abolitionist. We cannot let Epona be made an example out of for demanding the basic rights of genderqueer, third gender, Two Spirit, and/or trans people to exist.
For her commissary, phone, and potential bond, please send donations to her family’s accounts specifying thr donations are for Epona. You can also use the 🌹 emoji to specify donations are for Epona:
Paypal: @brokebackwolfpack
Venmo: @brokebackwolfpack
Cashapp: $brokebackwolfpackEpona’s quotes:
“In the year of a state of emergency, I’m still alive.”
“I defended myself against three men. They classified me as a male in here. I don’t feel safe around other men.”
quote from Epona’s partner:
“Epona was feeling unsafe even before she was physically attacked…She knew she was vulnerable traveling alone as a houseless, traumatized, neurodiverse trans woman, and yet her mission of building resource networks for other trans humans was so important to her that she decided to take that risk, even when her traveling partners flaked off one by one. That was her sacrifice. And she needs our support now.

Unravel is a counter-information project with an insurrectional perspective that aims to connect acts of negation and attack in the so-called USA. Those in power want our acts to remain disparate and disconnected, the spark that drives each of us shielded from the other’s view. By weaving together the threads of action, this project hopes to draw throughlines in the struggles that anarchists engage in, in order to broaden and amplify shared projectualities.
Domination and authority cross us in a tangled and knotted web of ever more interconnected systems; unraveling this network at one point has the potential to create a cascade that throws everything into disarray, opening spaces for freedom. This website is explicitly anarchist, and accepts/reposts communiques, reportbacks, analysis, calls to action, events, and mass media articles about unclaimed acts of vandalism, sabotage, arson, or destruction.

from June 11th
Another year passes, and another June 11th is upon us. Once again we’re appreciating all that has unfolded in anarchist struggle over this period, both triumphs and hardships, outside the prison walls, and within. We’re appreciating the beauty in fighting back, and the strength that can be fostered when we refuse to succumb to both oblivion, and despair. Against oblivion: we refuse to let the state disappear rebels, to erase their sweet or sharp words from our discussions, or to remove or obfuscate their contributions to our shared struggles. Instead, we remember them. Their actions, words, laughter, potential, and humanity. We can act as conduit for each other through prison walls and among generations. They can be kept involved as our struggles shift and change, and we can keep them connected to the outside world, and too the outside connected to them. Against despair: up against the power of the state, it can feel as if nothing can be done. Despair is a very particular space to inhabit. Despair is not hopelessness, as hopelessness can be a fair assessment of circumstances. One can see and acknowledge hopelessness with a full heart and strong spirit. But despair, despair destroys courage. What is despair, but to value the knowing of suffering without acting against it. We refuse to wallow in the realm of despair, indefinitely. We refuse to let despair destroy our courage. Instead, we will offer hope to one another. Not a naive or misguided hope that offers false solutions. But instead, an impassioned belief in our capacities as individuals, and capabilities together, to continue on. We can learn from people, like prisoners, who face the full power of the state in isolation and maintain their principles, their humor, their courage, and their resolve. We will act not just based on what’s possible or “strategic,” but on what we know to have value and meaning both out of care and love for each other and in an acting for our own selves, our own aliveness and spirit. Imprisoned comrades are often an incredible example of persevering in the face of hopelessness. Of coming out on the other side of it to the fierce activity of nothing to lose, and nothing worse to be feared.Prisoner Updates
Over the last nine years since coming out to friends, family, and supporters as a trans man, Marius Mason has advocated for himself inside the Bureau of Prisons to get his legal name changed, to get access to hormones, and to get transferred to a men’s facility, paving the way for others to do the same. He started the Day of Action & Solidarity with Trans Prisoners. In his message for the Day earlier this year he says, “We are closer to that goal than ever before, as trans prisoners. This year, the Transgender executive Council began meeting again to make decisions about transitioning in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Several prisoners, both trans men and trans women, were told that they had met the requirements for medical transition and were approved for gender affirming surgeries. I was one of these fortunate few.” We see how precarious these victories are when they are at the whim our our enemies. More than anything, we want him out. This year we take bitter solace in acknowledging that the majority of Marius’s sentence is behind him; he has 8 of 22 years remaining.
Eric King, who has suffered horrific abuse in federal prison, is finally getting out this year. After being acquitted last year on charges of assaulting an officer, he was returned to a supermax where he his access to phone and communication, time out of his cells, and even legal visits are extremely restricted. He and his team recently filed a lawsuit against the prison. As his release fund is getting significant support, Eric and his family continue to be strung along by the BOP, disputing the time and location of his release.
Michael Kimble has been dedicated to building collective power in Alabama DOC, supporting other queer prisoners, participating in collective resistance, and sharing radical history with others, all while healing from multiple injuries with poor medical care. He met someone special inside and got married last year.
Alfredo Cospito has continued to fight the state from prison. Since his initial sentencing for wounding a nuclear executive, and an additional life sentence for other previous actions, he continues to be hounded for his unrepentant anarchism. The latest trial against him and other comrades began in March of this year, many months into his hunger strike against the conditions he is subjected to. The Italian state attempted to bury him in the tyrannically isolated 41 bis dungeons last year, and he began the strike against this “non-life” last October. His health is rapidly deteriorating, and we’re not sure he will survive much longer, but he remains an unrepentant iconoclast inspiring innumerable actions around the world.
Anna Beniamino, Alfredo’s dear comrade and co-defendant during the Scripta Manent trial, also took part in a hunger strike in solidarity with him from her place of imprisonment, but later withdrew to recenter Alfredo’s fight.
Dan Baker, coming up on the end of his 3.5 year sentence, has been facing an onslaught of harassment and abuse. His books and personal items have been confiscated, and his email and phone communication severely restricted, including his ability to communicate with his lawyer, as prison staff are doing all they can to punish Dan for his beliefs. Dan has endured physical assault, the denial of health services, including restricting his access to asthma medication and treatment for a tumor, all as retaliation that seeks to jeopardize both his release date and his housing options post-release.
Legacies of Resistance and Resilience
The history of June 11th is deeply connected to actions taken in defense of the earth. Starting with now-former prisoners from the Green Scare, it continues with Marius, who still has 8 years remaining of his sentence. Despite the state’s severe criminalization of earth liberation and land defense, these movements and activities in the US cannot be repressed. Many struggles are not only ongoing, but expanding and gaining power. Indigenous people continue to fight to protect their land from colonizers and extraction in the so-called US, Canada, Chile, France, and Mexico just to name a few. Over the last two years, the movement to Stop Cop City in Atlanta is demonstrating how even the threat (and in Marius’s case, the reality) of decades in prison is still not successful in scaring us into passivity. More and more people are now facing the possibility of terrorist charges for themselves or their friends, and the threat of being locked up for decades.Marius is a great example of someone who has faced this level of repression before, and did so with dignity, strength, and care. The continuity of his support over the last 15 years is a demonstration and practice of what long-term prisoner support can look like. The refusal of his abandonment by supporters can hopefully give some strength to forest defenders and rebels as they face down the threats if the state. Other Green Scare cases have successful challenged enhancements or lengthy sentences, despite the fear-mongering of the state. Whether charges stick or not, we can try to build a legacy of connection and support for those that act.
As the state continues to lash out against women, queer and trans people; crafting new laws to police our health and well-being, whether in the stripping of our access to abortion, or the governing of our access to live-saving hormones, surgeries and gender-affirming care, we’re reminded that anything that the state grants us, can be easily stripped away, and that our struggles are deeply interconnected, and must always remain so.
Drag shows have become the latest ground for violent confrontation, as we ‘dare’ to gather together. Transphobes continue to stake-out space at university talks, on television, and walking down the street. Abortion clinics are seeing more opposition on the ground after the repeal of Roe vs. Wade. But even as powerful and more visible opposition emerges, so does our capacity to act. Queer spaces are refusing to cancel events, and instead practicing and enacting visions of proactive self-defense. Clandestine actions across so-called North America have targeted fake abortion clinics, as well as churches that spew pro-life and homophobic rhetoric. “Jane’s Revenge”, a nod to the underground network of abortion providers in Chicago in the 70’s, is a reminder that we need not sit idly by and watch as life -saving resources, and our humanity, are stripped away. As terrifying as these times are, it is important to remember that we do not have to give in.
What feels like an undoing of progress can also be seen another way: as the facade lifting, and the violent project that is the state, continuing to reveal itself. The legacies of informal groups like Bash Back, and of course individual queer people (like Michael Kimble, imprisoned for defending himself against a violent racist homophobe) remind us that queer– and transphobia is built into the very framework of the state, and that legacies of autonomy, self-defense and survival outside of the existing resources will always be vital to prioritize. We can stop shaking our fists at power, hoping it meets our demands. Power never cedes itself to demands. What we can do is continue to become adept at tools to protect ourselves; whether that’s honing our ability fight and hold ground, grow skilled in healthcare outside of state infrastructure, and deepening other means to stay anonymous, adept, and as free as possible, as well as exercising our capacity to act.
Despite the terror of prison, Michael Kimble continues to advocate for his own release, has found love and a network of queers inside the prison walls with whom to stand alongside. Jennifer Rose has a history of standing up for herself against prison administrations, participating in collective resistance, and writing and contributing to queer advocacy. Marius has fought inside prison for access to gender-affirming resources, including a transfer to a men’s facility. We should celebrate his hard-earned triumphs, while also remembering that most trans prisoners don’t have access to these things. Its worth celebrating victories, and also important to remember that shifts in our society at large trickle down to prisoners. Changes in the greater “free” world that limit our access to life-saving hormones, queer spaces, name changes and the like, will certainly impact prisoners most severely.
As the state continues to encroach on our autonomy, and as violent policies remain commonplace, we must embrace the reality that all we have to protect us is ourselves. The state, its police and prisons will always enforce boundaries of race, gender, and class. We understand that violence against queer people is still a daily reality for so many, even more-so when it intersects with anti-blackness, racism, xenophobia, and poverty; and as anarchists, we’re never interested in freedom for some; its about freedom for all of us. There will always be risks, and the unfortunate reality of this world is that living openly as ourselves can bring policing, prison, or death. But we can learn from the legacies of resilient and courageous queers, incarcerated and free, to not back down, or live in fear or despair. Let us be strong, fierce, and unwilling to abandon one another.
People have been rising up against the police as long as the police have existed. In the US and around the world, the intensity of anti-police activity ebbs and flows. Again with movements and actions against state violence, against the police, and against police killings of black people, we see the failure of the state’s threats and imprisonment to pacify us. The next round of struggle has already started by the time prisoners from the last round are released. Eric King is just finishing up his 10 year sentence for actions taken in solidarity with the Ferguson Uprising in 2014. Josh Williams, given the longest sentence of anyone arrested at Ferguson protests, is also approaching the end of his sentence. In the last couple years we’ve seen the sentencing of George Floyd uprising prisoners. Malik Muhammad, given one of the longer sentences from 2020, is a couple years into an almost 10-year sentence. Around the world we see militants in France, Chile, Haiti and elsewhere facing down the police. In Russia, we see anarchists attacking not just the police, but military infrastructure. Waves and waves of crowds and individuals continue to decide that, despite the risks, its worth standing up to the police.
Spreading Embers
Many of us know what it is feels like to sink into despair. When the losses add up, and pushing through feels insurmountable. But an integral part of the anarchist spirit is facing that despair head-on, with a determination to burst through it and continue on, fighting. Anarchist prisoners are a prime example of this spirit: they have faced the state head-on, faced the uncertainties of felony trial and state pressure, and remained courageous in the face of repression, as well as the daily dehumanization and violence that occur inside prisons. Their cases can teach us about tactics, approaches, and the case against them can illuminate the arsenal of tools utilized by the state. Rebel prisoners show us what it means to live courage, resiliency and determination.
The terrain of struggle looks wildly different than it did even ten years ago, and we are constantly adapting to a changing context. But our struggles remains interconnected, and they carry on. Sometimes the impact of things feels pointless; intangible. But the reality is that the struggle for freedom is constantly unfolding, and is yet, unwritten. Anonymous actions from across the world remind us, here and now, that we are not alone in our anger at this system, and that is possible to move through fear, anxiety and despair in order to continue to fight. Rebels, known and unknown, illustrate that it is indeed possible to act for our freedom, here and now.
Two tools of the prison system are isolation, and time. Isolation that wears on the spirit of those locked away and time that passes as we on the outside can become distracted by all that grasps for our attention. But we can refuse to allow these approaches the success they seek. We can remind prisoners that they are not forgotten, that their contributions are a part of a continued fight against domination, and in search of total freedom. The stakes are indeed high, and wanting to avoid the atrocities of prison are very understandable. But when we continue to include anarchist prisoners as a important part of our struggle, we pay homage to their contributions, and show that we are not backing down, despite the risks.
Allowing the prison’s tactics of division to be unsuccessful is a small but vital contribution to weakening its totality. When we show that being locked up will not make someone forgotten, we demonstrate that the horror and alienation that prison thrives upon does not have to take root. For every coward that has sold away their friends, lovers, comrades and values for the paltry offerings of security or comfort, there are strong hearts who refuse to abandon their commitments in the face of repression. Let us celebrate their additions, their heart and spirit, and their lives as we refuse to let our passion for freedom be obliterated.
We are here because we refuse to fall victim to despair. Neither will we allow our friends, compas, comrades, or homies to disappear into oblivion. We reach out to them however we can: with letters and visits, with money on their books, by shouting their names in the streets and writing them on walls – while the imprisoned continue with their contributions from the other side. No struggle or its gatherings can occur without others being reminded of those that fought and got locked away – nor those who died.
Not least of all, we carry all of them in our hearts as we carefully proceed through the darkness, continuing our collective fight. This way we keep them close – no one forgotten and not one fiber of this society forgiven. Those intricate strings tying together the means of domination are within reach, and we carry on the efforts to sever every one.
We do not rely on empty slogans, letting anarchy die like a shallow breath exhaled from our tepid mouths. Acting on our desires, we reinvigorate the life blood of our fight time and again. So we continue to breath fire upon the machinations of civilization, and all those attempting to police our revolt. Increasingly isolated, with spreading embers lighting the path to their uncertain footing, we will collapse the pale corpses propped up as dominant edifices above us.
Alfredo reminds us that there is no losing when we choose how we live, and may well vanquish death upon being sown back into the earth.
In the ruins of the old world we will gather as patient swarms, finding those once taken from us standing proudly beside us, and begin to look toward tomorrow.

from It’s Going Down
This is the first issue of an irregular publication by the Counter-surveillance resource center, a database of resources about evading targeted surveillance.
International Coordination Against Targeted Surveillance
We are anarchists. We believe in an international coordination of informal anarchist groups to pursue the fight against all forms of domination. We believe that sharing knowledge about our enemies’ capabilities and tactics should be an important part of that coordination. The knowledge is not an end in itself, but a means to limit our chances of being caught so we can continue attacking.
Our enemies have great capabilities and perfected tactics. On their side they have the police and justice systems, the scientists and technocrats, and in some cases the support of the general population. They control vast infrastructure networks. They have infinite memory, archives and DNA databases.
On our side, we have the informal and decentralized nature of our organizations, shadows to hide in, and solidarity to help each other in difficult times, to continue the fights of comrades who cannot do so anymore.
No matter what, we make and will continue to make mistakes in the battle against such strong oppressive mechanisms. Mistakes that will always “cost” more compared to the cops’ mistakes which are “absorbed”. We must weigh the situations again and ensure that the mistakes which happened once simply can not happen again. We must study and appreciate the accumulated experience of so many years and, taking into account the tendency to prepare for the battles which already took place and not for those that will come, let’s be prepared and may luck be on our side…
anarchist comrades from Greece, in a text detailing the surveillance that led to their arrests, 2013
Our enemies already organize on an international level; they share information, tactics, and technological and scientific developments. This is unfortunate, but it also means that a report by comrades in one country — on, say, a good way to deal with DNA traces, or a bug found in a squat, or a cheap tool to take down police drones — could help others anywhere else in the world.
Certainly, not everything should be shared publicly. Sometimes, information still unknown to our enemies should remain secret based on a specific strategy or plan. But otherwise: let’s share knowledge and experiences, and organize ourselves!
Announcing: The Threat Library
The goal behind the Counter-Surveillance Resource Center’s newly released Threat Library is simple: looking at the state’s array of repressive techniques and in order to better outmaneuver them. The Library documents two dozen different policing techniques, splitting them into three tactics (deterrence, incrimination, and arrest), and offering potential mitigations, meaning ways of reducing damage, for each one. It also connects techniques to specific repressive operations carried out by the state against anarchists in the past couple of decades.
The Threat Library is meant to help you threat model, a process through which you try to understand what kinds of measures the state is likely to be taking against you so that you can prepare for them. This exercise is best done collaboratively with the comrades you are working with on a specific project. Good threat modeling can transform fear or paranoia into courage, by giving us a specific idea of what we are up against so we can take precautions. In other words, it helps us decide on appropriate Operational Security (OpSec).
The CSRC suggests using the Threat Library to make ‘attack trees’. “Attack trees are a tool to facilitate a collective brainstorming exercise on the different ways that an adversary could successfully attack you in a given context, by representing the attacks in a tree structure.” See the Threat Library tutorial for a step-by-step guide on their use.
The Threat Library can also be used to navigate resources outside of a threat modeling exercise. Suppose that anarchists in my area have a history of infiltrators and informants being used to break up our organizing. Under the “Incrimination” tab, I select “infiltrators.” In no more than 300 words, the entry breaks down the five main types of infiltrators and offers three possible mitigations (attack, need to know principle, and network map exercise). If I click on the “Infiltrators topic” button, I’m given a list of 27 texts written by anarchists about infiltrators in their networks. My fear of infiltrators is eased by knowing what specific signs to look for and with some practical tools for strengthening my networks of trust.
With topics ranging from door knocks to house raids to forensics, the Threat Library aims to be thorough while also staying brief and to the point. The CSRC has a huge amount of information about repression and how to deal with it, and the Threat Library summarizes and sorts it all for you so it’s practical and easy to parse. The Threat Library is available in zine format for easy reading and distribution.
Is there a technique, mitigation, or repressive operation that you think is missing? Would you like to edit one that is currently listed? To add, improve, give criticism or feedback to the Threat Library, get in touch with us at [email protected].
A Base to Stand On: Distinguishing OpSec and Security Culture
Sometimes related terms become synonyms, and sometimes that can be fine. English is full of them, like “amazing” and “awesome”— no one misses the difference between these words.
Sometimes though, allowing the difference between terms to get lost also causes us to lose a useful piece of meaning. Operational security (OpSec) and security culture are two terms that have similar but distinct meanings, and both are required parts of an anarchist practice of security against repression.
OpSec refers to the specific practices used to avoid getting caught for a given action or project. Some OpSec practices include wearing gloves and masks, using different shoes, measures to avoid leaving DNA, black bloc clothing, using Tails for anonymous Internet access, and so on. OpSec is on the level of the action or project. These practices can be taught, but ultimately only the people doing a specific project together need to agree on which OpSec practices to use.
According to Confidence Courage Connection Trust: “Security culture refers to a set of practices developed to assess risks, control the flow of information through your networks, and to build solid organizing relationships.” Security culture occurs on the level of the relationship or the network. These practices need to be shared as widely as possible to be effective.
At first glance, OpSec might seem more important. If we have the practices we need to be safe, the thinking goes, then what does it matter what other people in the milieu do? Many anarchists are (justifiably) skeptical of milieus and don’t see themselves as connected to or reliant on people they don’t have close affinity with. A lot of energy in the anarchist space goes into perfecting OpSec, which seems appropriate, since if you want to take offensive action, it’s preferable to not get caught.
However, security culture is also important, and good OpSec is no replacement for it. It provides the social context—the base—on which all our activity is built. Because, like it or not, we are all embedded in networks, and the price of fully cutting yourself off from them is high. Without a stable base, it is much harder to take action safely.
Going back to Confidence Courage Connection Trust, the authors write that security culture is not about closing up, but finding ways to safely stay open to connections with others. It involves having honest conversations about risk and setting some basic norms with broader networks than just the people we intend to act with. Security culture is not static—it’s not just a set of rules that people in “radical” subcultures should know. It needs to be dynamic, based on ongoing conversations and our best analysis of current repression patterns.
Practices like vouching, network mapping, and background checks might seem like OpSec and may be an important part of planning certain actions, but they come out of security culture. Security culture involves asking, “what would it take for me to trust you?” It doesn’t mean you need to vouch everyone you know or that you don’t spend time with people you don’t vouch, just that you’re clear about who you trust with what, and why, and that you have mechanisms for learning to trust new people safely.
No amount of good habits about how to talk about actions that occur in your town (security culture) will protect you if you leave DNA at the scene (OpSec), and no amount of detecting physical surveillance (OpSec) will protect you from the undercover cop who befriended your roommate in order to get close to you (security culture). OpSec and security culture practices are distinct and one is not a substitute for the other. By developing a more thorough understanding of both frameworks we can try to keep ourselves and each other out of prison while continuing to build connections and expand informal networks of affinity.
Snippets Against Surveillance
In this section, we’d like to share short notes that are within the scope of the CSRC, but did not warrant having their own entry on the website. You can send us such notes if you want them published in the next issue.
In 2021, several people were arrested in France following the arson of vehicles belonging to Enedis (responsible for managing the electricity distribution network in France), and of an important relay antenna. A text in French details the interesting range of surveillance techniques that preceded their arrests: tailing, taking DNA from a car handle while its owner was shopping, entering a home at night to install a keylogger on a computer, asking Enedis to provide the list of people who refused installation of the new “smart” electricity meter that they are installing everywhere, and asking a local journal to provide the IP addresses that accessed their article on the arson.
In 2022, two anarchists were arrested in Italy and charged with fabrication and possession of explosive material. A text explains that the investigation that led to the arrests started when an “unknown person” found explosive material, electrical material and other devices in a forest in June 2021. Afterwards, the cops set up photo/video traps to “catch” anyone who went near the area. Subsequently a person was photographed from behind near the spot, and the police subsequently alleged to have recognized and identified them.
To end this section, here’s a hopeful quote from a communique claiming responsibility for the arson of a prison construction office in Germany:
In order not to produce good pictures on the surveillance cameras, we wore rain ponchos to disguise our body shape and gait. To make our head shape unrecognizable, we used hats. The further development of video analysis worries many comrades. With this insight we want to show possibilities to resist against this surveillance technique.
