Slavery is not just a thing of the past—its effects continue to be felt in systemic inequality and racism. This message was reiterated on Monday by the United Nations Committee against Racial Discrimination as the world marked the International Day of People of African Descent. The Committee called on countries to implement comprehensive restorative justice, combining compensation, restitution, rehabilitation, and structural reforms.

U.S. Votes Against Recognizing Slavery as a Crime Against Humanity The UN passed a resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity, backed by 123 countries. The US, Israel & Argentina were the only nations to vote against it, in opposition to a global consensus. The resolution also strengthens the push for reparations tied to the lasting impact of slavery.

I fully agree. Unfortunately, unless the UN has a mechanism for imposing meaningful sanctions on Western nations that profited from the African Slave Trade I don’t think anything meaningful will come from this. I can think of one nation in particular that will never accept any responsibility for its crimes…

@ChrisMayLA6 Well, India and China used to *utterly dominate* the global economy before colonization and destabilization efforts by the British, Portuguese, Dutch, French, and others.
Instead of looking at 1980-present, why not look at 1600-present or something like that? Maybe even 1492-present, to capture the grand, systematized theft of wealth by European colonialism from the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

The legal institution of human chattel slavery, comprising the enslavement primarily of Africans and African Americans, was prevalent in the United States of America from its founding in 1776 until 1865 (predominantly in the South.) [Slavery was foreshadowed by Christopher Columbus' treatment of Native peoples, justified under the "Doctrine of Discovery."] From 1526 during the early Colonial Period it was practiced in what became Britain's colonies that formed the United States. Under the law, an enslaved person was treated as property that could be bought, sold, or given away. Slavery lasted in about half of U.S. states until abolition in 1865, and issues concerning slavery seeped into every aspect of national politics. In the decades after the end of Reconstruction in 1877, many of slavery's economic and social functions were continued through segregation, sharecropping, and convict leasing. [and continue to this way within the prison system]

"The Black Reparations Project" and "From Here to Equality" are two books by the husband wife economics team of Sandy Dirty and Kirsten Mullen.
They show in concrete terms how to deliver reparations and in so doing close the racial wealth gap in the US.
Opinions are shifting in favor of reparation, time to read the policy we're ACTUALLY asking for.

That's just returning SOME stolen property to a FEW wealthy families.
Reparations is for all decedents of slavery. It MUST include widespread cash payments.
It's best done at the Federal level, but of course states are welcome to pay their share.
But this is not that.

There's a growing chorus of allies standing in support of Reparations for American descendants of slavery.
There's a ton of logistical and legal issues with state/local level reparations(this should be federal and work similarly to tribal membership imo). All that being said, the state and local efforts in CA are extremely heartening and based on sound economics.
