If you're looking for an #apartment in the #US, you need to monitor the #rental price for a while before you sign the #lease. I live in #Georgia and started following #rent prices years ago, even when we weren't in the #market, and several times a year I see advertised rates for the SAME UNITS *rise or fall* HUNDREDS of dollars — literally overnight. 1/2
Pay attention, #renters!

The landlord denies repeatedly that we have a mold problem.
This is our closet.
We keep cleaning it off, and it keeps growing back.
It's got to be inside the wall.
Our whole family has been feeling increasingly sick-- increased severity of asthma, rashes, and an increase of allergy symptoms, because of the mold problem in this apartment that was here before we moved in. I could tell what we would be in for, because the first week we moved in, I noticed spots where the mold was showing through the new coats of paint. (Somehow, this unit passed section 8 mainstream voucher inspection even though our side door didn't lock at the time, and still does not lock despite our many requests to have it fixed)
This landlord just had maintenance paint over the problem, probably in hopes that we'd never notice.
We been documenting this issue since 2 weeks after we moved in, since May 15th of this year, and he STILL denies there's a problem.
So far, we have a bathtub faucet that doesn't work (so the children who have skin conditions, can't soak), a toilet that doesn't flush properly (so I have to use the bedside commode), a molded bathroom ceiling in one bathroom and a water damage bubble growing in the other bathroom above the shower and an oven that doesn't work (we rely on crockpot, microwave, and stovetop to cook).
This landlord collects 1,215.00 for this unit per month. It's one apartment in a complex of around 100 other units.
We have a civil rights case open with the land lord because he made it clear that he doesn't like our family because we are autistic and disabled. Yet, the dept of civil rights has been favoring the landlord after I mistakenly told them that I was struggling with mental health issues.
Side note:
That's our computer monitor box that's in the picture. It's probably ruined, in which case, I'd have to find a different box to pack the monitor in, in order to return it.... Would I still be able to get a refund??

The #Rent Is Too Damn High!
Going on right now at the state capitol in #Lansing Michigan.
The Senate heard word and took an extra day off, to avoid having to hear renters speaking up. Senate will be voting on new housing laws soon.
Among our demands, we want them to repeal the rent control ban!

#RentIsTooDamnHigh -
"LANSING, Mich.—A statewide coalition known as “Rent is Too Damn High” will descend on Michigan State Capitol on Sept. 5 to protest escalating costs of housing in the state. According to the coalition’s press coordinator, Lindsey Barchard, well over 600 people had pledged to join the protest at the capitol by early August.
The Sept. 5 rally will include a DJ, chanting and marching, spoken word poetry, multiple speakers, and an area for people to share their own housing stories. “Our plan for the 5th is to make as much noise as possible,” Bachard said, “to convey to the legislators the sheer volume of Michigan’s residents who are becoming increasingly desperate for change.”
Rents in Michigan have grown rapidly over the past few years as urban gentrification projects have been offered as the main solution for economic woes. According to recent media reports, a typical renter in 2023 must earn an average of $21.65 per hour to afford basic housing in the state.
The state’s minimum wage, however, remains locked in at a paltry $10.10 per hour, and the “tipped” hourly minimum is $3.84. In addition, an anachronistic statewide ban on rent control has also fueled skyrocketing housing costs.
The Rent is Too Damn High rally will “raise awareness and put pressure on lawmakers to take action to address the full-blown housing crisis in our state,” Barchard said."

Alright, so I did some numbers.
In theory, I'm not supposed to spend more than 1/3 of my income on rent.
In my building, for my unit, that now rents for $1,700 (and rented at ~$1,000 four years ago and is a 450 sqft one-bedroom)... that'd require $68,000 in take home pay.
... I didn't even make ^half^ of that in 2022.
