#Fortune500 bosses demanding staff return to the office (#RTO) share one trait: #Narcissism, research finds
A new study from #Wharton organizational psychologist Adam Grant and coauthors Marissa Shandell and Courtney Elliott found that leader narcissism was associated with greater resistance to #remotework. A big reason? Power trips are easier to stage in person.

Can One Person Really Build a Million-Dollar Online Business?
For most of modern business history, building a large company usually meant building a large team.More customers required more employees.More sales required more operations.More growth required more management. As a result, many people assumed that significant business success was impossible without hiring dozens or even hundreds of employees.Today, that assumption is being challenged.Technology is changing the economics of entrepreneurship, and a growing number of founders are proving that […] -

Although perhaps my favourite:
"When people aren’t in the office, it’s harder to command and control. Leaders can’t intimidate by hovering over cubicle desks and slamming doors. They can’t establish their dominance by summoning people to a conference room and pounding their fists on the table. They can’t even make direct eye contact to stare people down"
Choose wisely (with your feet) who you're working for👌🏻😎

A couple of noteworthy quotes:
"They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshipped at the office altar"
"[…] self-centered leaders tend to struggle with the idea of employees making independent choices about where to work"
Like I said, incredibly useful reminder showcasing some early signs to watch out for when working with sociopaths / psychopaths

"[…] ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities" 👉🏻 https://archive.ph/QpMio
Fascinating new research acting as a friendly reminder: Whenever your manager asks you to return to the office, because of, you know, productivity, culture, innovation, etc. you may actually be dealing with a sociopath / psychopath 😤🤯🤬

@Valdis It's more difficult, indeed, to be a bully, or a narcissist, when #DistanceWorking. If anything, because it's usually well documented, therefore, easily audited, and also out in the open for everyone to see when someone is an ars*h*le.
I don't know whether Zoom does have that feature, but I think it'd be rather useful. Instead of a green check to indicate Web presence, something to flag their bullish behaviour for all to see & remember👌🏻😅

@Valdis Many thanks, Valdis! 🙏🏻😊 Yeah, I saw that article earlier on this morning here in Mastodon, we talked about it in the community as well.
It looks like the masks are *finally* coming off, right? Specially, with poignant quotes like this one:
"They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshipped at the office altar" 🤯😱

"We taught the remote workers to be proactive about communicating with their group members; not to wait in hopes of receiving calls. Often, you can tell whether someone is feeling well or poorly just by the tone of voice. We taught the managers of remote workers to check that effective communications were happening"
Oooh, for those at the back ... Jack coined #Telework in 1973!!! 😍👍🏻
Does that ring a bell? 🤯👉🏻 #EnergyCrisis

"In my opinion, given the technology available today, 90%+ of most business situations (other than the obvious hands-on things like your annual medical checkup) do not require face-time" 👉🏻 https://jacknilles.substack.com/p/face-time-vs-zoom-time
You know what's pretty crazy about that quote ? It was written by the father of the concept of #Teleworking, Jack Nilles, back in 2010! 😳🤯
Yeah, we know, #RemoteWork is nothing new, and yet ... 🤔

[#GiftLink] “Our new #research reveals that the objection to any work from home is more likely to be driven by something else entirely: #ego.
Case by case, there may be good reasons for teams to work together in person. As a general rule, though, it turns out that ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities. They see any kind of #remotework as a threat to their authority and admiration. "That pattern held for chief executives of Fortune 500 companies. Since we couldn’t directly measure the size of their egos, we measured factors that many previous studies have identified as reliable proxies for narcissism: the sizes of their pay packages, their signatures and their photos in their company reports. (No, the chief executives probably aren’t directly overseeing the page layout, but their underlings have to figure out what will and won’t please the boss.) Commanding outsize compensation and projecting an outsize image sends a message right out of Ron Burgundy’s playbook: I’m kind of a big deal. We found that the higher chief executives scored on this index, the more likely they were to seek power and status by becoming chairmen of their own companies and joining the boards of other companies. These were the chief executives who made the most negative statements about remote and hybrid work during the first two years of the pandemic.
The connection between narcissistic personality traits and wanting people in the office full time is not coincidental — it’s causal."

The Secret Reason Bosses Want Everyone Back in the Office, Every Day of the Week

The Glass Cathedral of Work
A wall of glass tilt over your head and you start to feel very small, very corporate and very much in need of a strong coffee. This is the WeWork office in London. Look closely and there's one warm pendant lamp glowing in a window, a tiny pocket of cosiness in a tower of cold glass, and that's the bit that gets me. I'd rather be working from home and I think most people would too.https://inphotos.org/2026/06/22/the-glass-cathedral-of-work/

What Happens When Everyone Has Access to AI?
For most of history, powerful technologies were available only to a relatively small number of people.Factories required significant capital.Computers were once expensive and inaccessible. The internet began as a specialized tool before becoming part of everyday life.Artificial intelligence appears to be following a very different path.Instead of remaining limited to large corporations, AI tools are becoming available to almost everyone. Entrepreneurs, students, creators, freelancers, […]
