When it comes to #home #remodeling most projects seem to focus on kitchens, bathrooms and basements. But if you have a #90s home, take a hard look at your stairs. Ugly? Probably. Don't meet today's safety codes? Oh yeah. Here's a before/after of what a local stair and flooring company did for us.

Had not had “vacuuming the walls” on my long weekend bingo card, but there it is.
Painting day 6 of N+? is a break in the action for cleanup and wiping out cabinets and drawers that haven’t been empty for a decade. And walls, so many walls….

CW: Piles of disgusting pack rat shit.
Bathroom remodel and pack rat eviction day.
There's been a pack rat under the bathtub and in the wall between the bathroom and my bedroom for years. It got in through the bathtub drain penetration that was never sealed up when they remodeled the place in the '90s.
It finally got too smelly to the point where even though this is not how I want to spend my time, energy and money at the moment, I couldn't ignore it anymore.
First picture is my contractor friend prying the old tub up. Second picture shows the mass of pack rat poop, cactus thorns and nest material that had accumulated under there. The red things are from a bush I have outside called Sophora davidii. It has gorgeous cobalt flowers and beige pods full of bright red seeds. They are not edible, but I think the pack rat just thinks they're pretty.

Paint color research is ongoing. It is interesting how different the colors are in rooms with south vs north exposure. The bright yellow is just madness but I was curious. Family and friend votes being tallied - with most saying don’t do the dark colors. #remodeling

"...The once-active father of four now awaits a double lung transplant. He can no longer support his family or walk a few steps without pausing to catch his breath. Two stonecutter friends died after working with the man-made material, also known as artificial stone or quartz. Three others are on a waitlist for lung transplants, he said...."

I had to explain to spouse how visual clutter and every little thing in my field of vision that was wrong/undone/broken in this house was subconsciously contributing to my stress. I didn’t know it was related to Cognitive Load Theory, but that makes sense. I described it like Morpheus did about the matrix: “like a splinter in your mind.” 🕶️

Also, so many high-end homes have home movie theaters in the basement. They would make a great music studio. I’m always looking at homes and thinking to myself “ok where would I set up my home studio?”
Except…many of these home theaters have tiered flooring like a real cinema, and then those overstuffed recliners stuck together like a couch. So you can only fit maybe eight people total.
-
#3 Why do so many high-end homes have a wine cellar? And also a lot of them have a small putting green either inside or outside. Harumph. Rich people hobbies are boring. I guarantee you can have more fun and spend just as much money pretending to be a rock star, like me.
Ok maybe not. I have no idea how much it costs to collect wine or golf clubs. But fancy guitars and microphones surely compare!

#2 when I say reasonably sized, I mean like 4,500 sq ft at most. Spacious enough for the basement level to have an “in-law suite” with its own kitchen, etc. plus some room for guests and fun extras like an exercise room or music room. I’m not wanting a ballroom or ten bedrooms like a normal castle.
I don’t want a castle so big the kitties are impossible to find in an emergency, or so big I couldn’t clean the whole house myself in one day if I needed to. -
I’ve been looking at unreasonably-priced homes on Redfin (let’s be real; everything’s unreasonable nowadays) to get ideas for how to reconfigure our kitchen if/when we ever move the stairs. B/c moving the stairs would take about 7 ft away from our current kitchen, sort of.
Observations:
Our kitchen isn’t/wouldn’t be big enough to do all the cool & pretty layouts most modern kitchens have in these more spacious homes. :sadness: -
What’s sad is the price of paint has increased across the board due to various supply chain issues (and greedflation probably - yay!) so now a gallon of Sherwin Williams’ most premium paint is more expensive than a gallon of Farrow & Ball was in 2020, and ofc F&B is now about $140/gallon 💀
But what are you gonna do? *Not* paint your house? Leave the bare Sheetrock exposed for years? Live in squalour?!?

Every time I talk about paint colors I’m reminded of this SNL skit.
Look at the depth of colour!

“Is she still talking about color? Ugh.”
Here is a pic of my basement wall getting painted with Sherwin Williams’ High Reflective White, over basic white primer, which was painted over bare Sheetrock. Although I acknowledge that the grey of the Sheetrock may be affecting the tone of the primer, notice how much brighter the HRWhite is! 🤩
-
I’m hoping the Sherwin-Williams ceiling paint is the same bright white as their Super Paint High Reflective White. I really don’t want to have to tape off between the ceiling and the wall if possible.
High Reflective White is the ONLY white I’ve found that doesn’t look dingy in basements and other rooms that don’t get much natural light.
