  1. I just laugh at myself, thinking this would be a two-week job. It turned into most of a month. But, as is often the case with remodels, once we got started it became very clear that the easiest thing to do is rip the entire thing out to the studs and redo everything.

Luckily, my contractor friend will let me pay him after my work season is over in July, otherwise I never could've afforded this. Glad I did it! The rat nest under the bathtub and in the wall was so out of control. In the process, we also entirely redid all the plumbing under the whole house, and fixed a bunch of sketchy wiring, so the benefits go way beyond the bathroom.

  2. #RatShitRemodel concludes (for now).

My contractor friend has to leave, and I'm getting ready to snowbird my way back north pretty soon, but we have the bathroom at a stage where it can quickly be completed when I get back.

The shower pan is in, the plumbing is all done, the wiring has all been upgraded, the sheet rock and insulation are done. (I finished that today.) There's no window because we just ran the sheetrock straight over the old one for now. Once the new one arrives, we will reframe the rough opening cut the sheetrock back around it.

The faucet and the handles on the vanity are not installed yet, obviously, but they're a nice looking, classy design in flat black. The shower will have a sliding glass door and we put in a lot of blocking for things like towel racks, grab bars and shelving.

It is purple, because that's the color of moisture resistant sheet rock. Depending on the brand, it also comes in green or blue.

  3. Man, having a roll-off dumpster on the driveway releases the “clear ALL the crap” pheromones or something.

Remodel project spurs a garage clean up, crawl-space review, random bits-and-pieces-in-the attic clearance.

    Making significant headway.

  8. The #RatShitRemodel is proceeding apace. I did the last of the demolition today while Michael got all the plumbing hooked up (pics TK tomorrow, not yet in this photo). I found a remnant of the original knob-and-tube wiring from the 1940s when I tore open the wall. I'm leaving a little chunk in there.

Photo shows the open floor joists after we sistered new ones onto the old ones and soaked the old ones in linseed oil (why they're so dark) just to make them last a little longer, but even the ones that have been subjected to plumbing leaks had considerable integrity. I wouldn't normally have bothered to do this, but I had some old linseed oil I wanted to get rid of and this seemed like a good use for it.

  9. i am just eating to kill the overall soreness, and resting, just stopped taking antibiotics yesterday. we are in limbo at work until the planning committee issues results of the study - mas o menos, we have the kitchen demo but that is like 1 day, there is lots of prep and side work - no dimmers but probably 2x light, i like dimmers and also now the new led have the 3 or 4 position temp you want 2k/3k/4k #remodel lites

  10. CW: Piles of disgusting pack rat shit.

Bathroom remodel and pack rat eviction day.

There's been a pack rat under the bathtub and in the wall between the bathroom and my bedroom for years. It got in through the bathtub drain penetration that was never sealed up when they remodeled the place in the '90s.

It finally got too smelly to the point where even though this is not how I want to spend my time, energy and money at the moment, I couldn't ignore it anymore.

First picture is my contractor friend prying the old tub up. Second picture shows the mass of pack rat poop, cactus thorns and nest material that had accumulated under there. The red things are from a bush I have outside called Sophora davidii. It has gorgeous cobalt flowers and beige pods full of bright red seeds. They are not edible, but I think the pack rat just thinks they're pretty.

  11. The Man was looking at websites about basement remodels, and came across this photo.

His comment: "For tonight’s entertainment we are all watching bath night"

I have dreams like this room, but have never seen something like this in actuality... 😂

  12. I'd like to have some words with the electrician that ran these wires DANGEROUSLY close to the subfloor of my house. It's sheer dumb luck that no flooring nails or screws got put into them.

  13. Day#3 on tub remodel. Lethal fumes cleared from house overnight. Closing windows and pushing up the heat again to help it cure. Looks pretty good, though there are a couple of light spots and a little drip apparent in a corner. Acceptable but not perfect. Not dry enough to remove masking, started but stopped. No bubbles. #diy #bathtub #remodel

  14. I snuck out to the kitchen while the crew was on their lunch break. The progress is surprising to say the least.

The plumber is here, though we weren’t expecting him until next week. Something was leaking so he had to come early. There is also an issue with a pipe sticking out of a wall that needs to be moved into the wall so whatever needs to go in front of it will fit. There is a hole in the ceiling that we’re not sure what will happen to. We had a visit from the tile guy. He’s coming back on Sunday to do the back splash and (I think) touch up some paint.

I am really surprised at how fast this is progressing. It’s amazing.

  18. Question: MDF or OSB board underlayment over existing underlayment to strengthen floor?

Our house is aged and the flooring underlayment is also the finished floor, like 2" tongue and groove, and it's not holding up too well with my medical equipment.

We had extra bracing added at delicate areas between joists that was causing problems, like where my motorized wheelchair puts weird pressure. ( see below.)

Want to have new underlayment put down. Any tips. Suggestions? #Builders #Remodel

  19. A bit tricky to get good pictures, everything is so reflective! But here are a couple more shots. The shower door has sliding barn door hardware just like the mirror does - a bit hard to capture in a pic, but you can kind of tell in the mirror's reflection.

I'll have to take more pics with my real camera after the sun has gone down. Right now am too busy dancing 🩰🤗😜

  20. Installers are all forgiven because..... My shower doors are IN! and they look AMAZING! And I am going to be able to take a shower in my master bath for the 1st time in 5 years!!

  21. Proprietary track lighting in a room. I suspect my proper fix on this ($) is to just change this to the same standard as the other three track lighting systems in the house. PITA. #tracklighting #lighting #remodel

  22. Jeff's #kitchen #remodel tip.

    Don't skimp on the switches.

These touchless dimmers were more expensive but they make my spouse happy and are therefor priceless.

And yes... I do go around the house occasionally and make sure all the screws on my switch plates are properly horizontal

  23. Today's research project: Toilets. Doing home remodel that includes replacing 20YO one. SO MANY options. Reading reviews, checking Consumer Reports which annoyingly doesn't let me plug in all my preferred specs, only some. If you have a water-conserving and/or dual-flush comfort height soft-close seat you love, shout it out. 2x the love for wrapped or skirted base--easier to clean. Also, square-front toilet seats--why??

  24. #kitchen #remodel update.

30+ years ago I taught myself how to code in #Perl out of necessity.

Now I am sure I can teach myself how to apply #romanclay

  25. Lessons:
    1. Most window suppliers (at least, the most well known ones) don't meet the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient standards, even if they advertise themselves as "ENERGY STAR COMPLIANT". They are allowed to use the marketing for the YEAR THE WINDOW was introduced--even if the standard was significantly looser when released.

    2. Many manufacturers do not advertise or make available the U-Factor and SHGC of their windows. However, they do show up in the quotes (probably a law about that).

    3. You need to ask for the various coating options to increase the U-Factor and SHGC specifically, as most companies are hesitant to quote them (due to sometimes large increased cost).

    #window #remodel

  26. Hmm, window manufacturer who don't post their U-Factor and SHGC get removed from my consideration mmediately for a window replacement (both are published results on how efficient those windows are). I don't care how nice your photos look, what styles you have, but how efficient they are... #windows #remodel #EnergyEfficiency #energy

  27. @ColesStreetPothole fixed. I removed the box and they figured out their unsupported corner problem. I took a picture of where my network cable is and can pop in a panel whenever I need to (once rhe cabinets go in... need to dodge those too) #drywall #remodel #disasterremodel

  28. So it’s time to replace our kitchen cabinets. They’re probably close to 50 years old and the particle board is simply falling apart. Our house is small (around 1000 square feet), so our kitchen is as well.

Suggestions or resources on where to get started? Web searching seems to find mainly:

    • Ads
    • Articles about whether to replace them
    • Articles about how to do it yourself (we don’t have the skills, tools, or inclination)

(Specific recommendations for Portland, OR would be particularly useful.)

Two other things I noticed in this web search:

    • Many of the pages seem like they were written by either ChatGPT or a first-year college student trying to pad 2 pages of ideas into a 20-page paper.

    • What’s with all the open shelving? Who are these people who (a) are magically immune to dust and (b) have so much space they can spend four feet of shelving on one knickknack they got on their weekend trip to Provence?
