The rain gauge says 90 mm .
#GoodMorning #Bonjour
Getting to my van is tricky, that's deeper than 90 mm. Puddles on the road are deep too.Today's service will be at the cenotaph, but there was a rain plan if needed.#LestWeForget
I'm a 3rd Gen #Veteran, I will remember the service of my father, grandfather, & relatives, that of serving members , all those who served, fought, & those who never returned #RememberThem

He had just bought a ring.
He was going to propose in Jerusalem next week.
Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim - two young Israeli diplomats, partners in life and in peace-building — were murdered in cold blood outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C.
Shot by a man yelling “Free Palestine.”
Sarah worked to bring people together with empathy.
Yaron, a devout Christian Israeli, believed in peace and built bridges between cultures.
Their only “crime”? Being Jewish / Israeli.
We are living in a world where antisemitism hides behind slogans of peace, where the murder of Jews is called justice, and where silence becomes complicity.
But we will not be silent.
Not today.
Not ever.

I share this every year, because it's a powerful moving tribute, by a famed blind musican, Terry Kelly. I've met him twice, he's a great guy. #Share his touching song with others, as we #RememberThem?
#LestWeForget is it too much to give?

I pinned my medals on already. #GoodMorning #Bonjour #Moin
I haven't worn them since I retired, but I will today, for the #RemembranceDay ceremony at the cenotaph. I'm a 3G #veteran, my GFather fought in WWI & WWII, my Father a peacekeeper & I did 33 years myself. I've always been in the 'military'. Today I will #RememberThem .
And for all that served, and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. -

Angela Michelle Carr, 52, who was shot in her car;
store employee A.J. Laguerre, 19, who was shot as he tried to flee,
customer Jerrald Gallion, 29, who was shot as he entered the store, which is in a predominantly Black neighborhood. -
I have three vehicles, each with a couple Gold Star Family license plates on them for my boy, Ryan, who would be 37 this 1 June had he not been KIA in Iraq. This plate is on the front of my ‘93 Ford F-150 XLT.

Never forget: it’s an absolutely gorgeous evening here on deck, Memorial Day weekend 2023 just about in the books. For many. This version of The Offspring’s “Gone Away” is another that hits home for me because the nightmares I’ve had about Ryan David’s loss have images of the after effects of an IED detonation similar to the one that killed him.

@georgetakei And a President, who's not asking
"What was in it for them?", standing at the graves of those, who died in service of their fellow-humans & their country.

@NiteThief Also buried at Normandy American Cemetary:
Two of the Niland brothers, Preston and Robert, whose story inspired Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan.

#RememberThem this Memorial Day Weekend. Quote from President Truman, and a picture I took at the #WW2 #Indiana memorial on the mall.

Thanks to those who gave their lives for our country. May we honor their sacrifice by making our world more just, inclusive, and kind. A more perfect Union is a more compassionate one.

Not a huge fan of the Black Rifle Coffee Company but for Memorial Day 2018, they produced one of best Memorial Day videos I’ve ever seen. It truly hit home for me.

I hadn’t yet seen “Blackhawk Down” as of that day in 2004 in Mosul when I was assigned to shoot b-roll footage at a memorial for the families of two soldiers who were with the U.S. Army’s First Brigade, 25th Infantry Division and KIA in Mosul on 4 December. On arrival, there was a video of the two men and their families with this song. I ultimately produced. To me, it’s one of Hans Zimmer’s finest pieces he’s composed for a film soundtrack.

One of, in my opinion, the best Memorial Day memes ever. It’s also one that applies for me on many more evenings out here on deck.

A friend of mine who was deployed to SW Asia with the unit that in 2006 replaced my son Ryan’s unit doing convoy security missions into Iraq and was at my son’s memorial service. He produced this video a few years ago.

I went to Washington, D.C. on a Never Forgotten Honor Flight out of Mosinee, Wisconsin’s Central Wisconsin Airport in May, 2015, in a media capacity. As a Gold Star dad I gravitated toward the "Freedom Wall" at the WW2 memorial. It's a display of nearly 4,050 Gold Stars, each one signifying the loss of 100 U.S. service members in WW2. A little more than 400,000 U.S. military personnel, most of them killed in action, during that conflict.

Countdown to Memorial Day: I don’t drink to excess ondeck on some these gorgeous northern Wisconsin evenings but a glass is raised quite frequently to my boy, Ryan David Jopek, and Mark Phelan, who I knew in Iraq in 2004 and also, like Ryan, KIA there. For all of them.

Walter took third place in the category for “Trucks 1950 to 1969” at the Wheels, Wings and Watercraft Show yesterday which is cool but, as I’ve mentioned before in previous years, letting people who would like to hear the story of Ryan and Walter is way better than any physical award, be it first or third place.

I had two flags flying from Walter’s pickup box at the show yesterday, the U.S. flag on the driver’s side and the Gold Star flag on the passenger side. There were those who’ve asked about the Gold Star flag and I gave them a little history lesson, starting with the establishment of the Gold Star Mothers of America after World War 1. “I never knew that,” they say. “Thanks for letting me know.”

At the car show yesterday where I had my son’s ‘66 Chevy C-10 pickup, restored after Ryan was KIA in Iraq, on display.
“Is that your son?” some ask, looking at photos of Ryan. “Ryan’s my oldest boy,” I say. “He didn’t get to see it this way. He’d be here to tell you all about Walter if he could. It’s his baby.”
“What a beautiful tribute to him,” they reply. “Thank you for sharing.”
