Resistance Fighter Lepa Radić

The Yugoslav Partisan was executed 83 years ago today at the age of 17.

In February 1943, Lepa Radić was captured while organizing a rescue of 150 citizens seeking refuge from the Axis. She attempted to protect them by firing at the Nazi SS forces but was eventually arrested. After 3 days of isolation + torture, during which Radic refused to divulge any information, the Germans sentenced her to death by hanging. Moments before her execution Radic was offered a pardon if she revealed the names. Her response: “I am not a traitor of my people. Those whom you are asking about will reveal themselves when they have succeeded in wiping out all you evildoers, to the last man.”

Wicked Witch of the West

Producer Mervyn Leroy's original idea for casting the Wicked Witch for The Wizard of Oz was inspired by Disney's adaption of Snow White - he wanted to make her slinky + seductive. He thought he'd found the perfect choice with actress Gale Sondergaard who'd won an Oscar the previous year for her Best Supporting Actress performance in his film Anthony Adverse.
Others however disagreed, thinking witches should be ugly. They attempted to give Sondergaard 'The Ugly Treatment' with make-up, but the actress herself decided she no longer wanted the role.

She was born to an Orthodox Jewish family that actively discouraged her from a career in show business. Nevertheless at the age of 17 she set out to follkw that carreer - first performing in vaudeville as an impersonator. she did impressions of Fanny Brice, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Maurice Chevalier and others. Eventually she was seen by animator Max Fleischer, who was looking for an actress to provide the voice for his Betty Boop character. Many years later she reprised her role as Betty Boop in the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit
She appeared as an actress in several films including A Majority of One, Funny Girl, and Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. She also appeared in. any commercials, most famously as Aunt Bluebell in the Scott Towel ads.

Frieda Belinfante (1904-1995) was an openly homosexual Dutch cellist & conductor of Jewish descent. During the War, Belinfante joined the same resistance movement as Willem Arondeus and other Dutch homosexuals & artists specializing in forging false identity papers & helping those wanted by the Gestapo into hiding. Belinfonte aided in organizing the 1943 bombiing of the Population Registry in Amsterdam. After the perpetrators were turned in by an unknown informant Belinfante fled Holland, dressed as a man, through Belgium & France to Switzerland. Once the war ended she was able to continue her musical career.
