  1. Heute am 27. Jänner erinnert der Internationale Holocaust Gedenktag an die Befreiung des Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslagers Auschwitz-Birkenau im Jahr 1945. 2. On #RememberanceDay in Canada we say #LestWeForget because forgetting means we fail to honour those who gave their lives defending freedom from fascists and nazis. And all those who still defend us today. It’s also because if we forget, we’re doomed to repeat. That’s more relevant now than ever.

  3. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.
    - Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae

Today is the #RememberanceDay in countries that have had historical links to France and England.
It was originally commemorated on the day that the #FirstWorldWar ended, and is used now to commemorate the military people that took part in other wars, in the case of #Canada its participation in #DDay in the #SecondWorldWar is a big part of it.

Thinking about this... (will continue in a second toot)

  8. My Vancouver grandmother was one of thousands of young women that took up jobs at the Boeing Factory making planes during the war. She would have been in her early 20s doing what she could to support the war effort. Today we have a bunch of call of duty players that can't even fathom the words of duty or honor.

These stories from Vancouver archives illustrate the kind of world she lived in during that time.

  9. Dear great(-great) grandparents. Sorry for your losses of family and friends during the 20th Century Wars. Just wanted to let you know that a bunch of shitheads gave all your wins up because some influencers went all in on Russian and Nazi propaganda and people without their own value systems went along with it cause it seemed "cool".

  11. Today it's supposed to be Remembrance Day.

Seeing as I spend all year trying to remind people about wars, their triggers, and why they are so important, yet ours and other governments still shovel money and weaponry to Israel and restrict weapons to Ukraine, I don't think I will be remembering anything.

Every sacrifice of WWI and WWII seems to be for nought, with fascists not just "on the rise", but in power and receiving international support, while democracies left to rot

  12. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning we will remember them. #rememberanceday

  13. Today we remember all those brave souls who died fighting what we just voted for.

  14. Do not celebrate war this coming Nov. 11 but remember how stupid war is by remembering the young people who died or came back with missing limbs. Don't glorify war. Please.

  15. I neglected to post this here yesterday, but regardless whether it’s Armistice Day or any other, the message is the same. We remember all taken by war. #rememberanceday #weremember

  16. As in many other regions of the world linked to England/GreatBritain, members of the army were commemorated in Canada today in reference to the day when the "Great War", the First World War, ended.

    #RememberanceDay cause of mixed feelings
