What was unexpected: an American pope who would begin breaking that alliance and insisting that the US Catholic bishops, a majority of whom are comfortable with the alliance, start questioning whether it reflects real Christian, real Catholic, values. What has energized this movement all along has been resistance to rights for people of color, women, and LGBTQ people. This alliance laid the foundation for someone like Trump to come along and claim that God is using him to save the nation — when anyone with any real sense of Christian faith knows how blasphemous and ludicrous that claim is.
