"But there is no empirical evidence for a sustained Christian revival in the United States — among members of Gen Z or anyone else."

As Sarah Jones says,
"Research has shown that millennials are less religious than their forebears, and Gen Z is less religious still. Now, headlines say otherwise. Young adults are rediscovering church and the value of faith in an unsettled world. Among them are young men who want families and masculine role models."

Though the mainstream media love to pander to right-wing political groups and their funders by pushing claims that religious revival follows in the wake of these groups, and though such claims are being advanced in both the UK and US now, there are increasing questions about the empirical evidence supporting media accounts of religious revival.

When fascist movements vie for attention and gain power, they claim that religious revival follows in their steps, a claim we're seeing now in both the US and UK. Astonishingly, even with Donald Trump as their icon, these movements will claim that they are sparking religious revival.

When fascist political parties — e.g., the Republicans — come to power, they inevitably claim that they're promoting religion. Such religion as they promote is, of course, highly selective, as we see in the Republican party's attack on Pope Leo, who arguably represents religion in a pre-eminent way as head of a worldwide religious body with millions of adherents.

"But YouGov, which carried out the research in 2024, said on Thursday that the data sample was flawed, with 'a number of respondents who we can now identify as fraudulent.'"

"A YouGov survey showing a significant rise in church attendance in parts of the UK has been withdrawn after some respondents were found to be fraudulent.
The poll was central to a Quiet Revival report, published by the Bible Society last year, which prompted news stories about an apparent resurgence in Christianity, particularly among young people."

"And academics and experts are warning that this episode should serve as a parable, not about a renaissance in religion, but of the false prophets of artificial intelligence.
Researchers have said online opt-in surveys are becoming increasingly infested with bogus data as respondents who are often paid for their participation use AI to fill in questionnaires at speed."

"Based on data collected by a YouGov survey, it claimed church attendance was increasing in England and Wales. The findings drove headlines, and the narrative was established.
There was just one problem – the survey turned out to be based on 'fraudulent' data and has been withdrawn."

"If you had been keeping tabs on the news about church attendance in Britain lately, you would be forgiven for thinking the country was in the midst of a Christian revival.
Stories of swelling congregations, filled with young people returning to the flock, spurred on by everything from social media to a rise in bible sales appeared to be confirmed by a 2024 report from the Bible Society."

"Without women, gaps in this social network make the church less 'sticky' for other believers."
The enthusiasm of mainstream media for the unsubstantiated meme of religious revival under Trump and after Charie Kirk's murder, and the claim that young men are spearheading this, has to be viewed within the frame of the media's servitude to Republicans and Trump — and to the "masculinity" movement.

"In fact, women’s withdrawal is one of the most important indicators for the church’s future. Traditionally, American Christian women are more religious than men. In most churches, even where women are not allowed to lead, they make up the backbone of church communities, offering free labor to maintain the sanctuary, teach, lead youth, serve children in church and other families in times of illness and difficulty."

"Last week, Pew Research Center released a report, noting Pew’s polls and no 'other high-quality surveys' Pew analyzed show clear evidence of a religious resurgence. Young adults, on average, are much less religious than older Americans. People in every age cohort (young and old) are getting less religious as they age."

"Recent reports claim surging interest in church with anecdotal stories of more young men attending. Christian Broadcasting Network reported churches 'overflowing' after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Talk of enthusiasm bred hope of revival. ...
But, broadly, it’s just not true."
