I ONLY SPEAK ENGLISH

While I have taken classes
or been otherwise exposed to

English, Latin, Spanish, 
German, Hebrew, Yiddish,
Roman and Arabic numerals, 
Logic – Formal Reasoning,
Civil Procedure Before Trial,
and Adaptive PE

I just don’t seem to have
the brain power to
intelligently
converse in 
anything 
but 		English


And Latin is now all in 
past tense, anyway
isn’t it?

CHOICES, CHOICES

Each holiday season,
my late wife and I would
bring home a spiral-sliced ham

This year, I decided to try
something different, so I
sampled the Birming Ham
and the Got Ham

But again, the spiral-sliced
ham won the day for having 
meat we wanted to eat

I LOOK AWAY WHEN I COMB MY BEARD

Watch a lot of TV,
primarily news
shows that use 
close-ups of 
male and 
female
newscasters 
so one sees a 
nice smile despite 
abundant makeup

then they pan down
and show the 		neck
which makes one
think turtle as 
it betrays 
wrinkles 
that must 
be hundreds 
of years older			
than that smile

SHAPED BY THE PAST

My dearest
parents 
resisted
the keen
pressure
applied by
domineering
relatives
who never
had kids,
to help 
raise the
ones in
our
household,

these kin
would
approach
our doorstep
with the 
vivacity of
door-to-door 
salesmen
so the front 
door was
basically
kept 
bolted shut
to block out 
unwelcome
visitors

thus if it
seems like
my social
skills are
shallow, 
that’s 
because 
the brain
cells that
would hold
such 
experience
were left
dormant
in my
head

I 
could
be the
world’s
greatest 
host, but
I’d rather
		not
deal 
with
that

FOR LOVE OF BOOKS

There was a 
small
library branch
very near 
the elementary
school I 
attended.
I would
pop in there
almost daily
and check
out a book

cumulatively
I read all
their science 
fiction books
and all their
whaling adventure
books, and
elsewhere
bought paperback
editions of 
Tom Swift
Huckleberry Finn,
etc., etc.
then I matriculated
to junior and senior
high school,
which imposed
some very heavy
textbook 
assignments
 on 			different
subjects, all
of which was
required reading,
and this 
extinguished
the flame that
had inspired my
recreational
reading		until
I concluded college,
started earning
money
and finally had
the time and
wherewithal
to resume my
recreational 
reading
I bought a book
by a bestselling
author on preorder
read it cover to cover
in one sitting 
like I had used to
casually read those 
library books,
sitting in a park
while shucking
and nibbling
sunflower seeds;
more recently
I poured over a
couple books
of poetry  
hence my 
personal library
is once again
growing

A reminder: please check the computers belonging to your elderly-but-computer-using #relatives. Ensure there aren't digital nasties on there. And when I say "check", I mean look yourself, don't just ask the #relative about it.

With age, people tend to lose some of their mental #sharpness, but it's not just poor memory or fuzzy thinking. They seem to lose some critical #thinking skills, and become more #trusting than they should, or more naive. I think this is what makes older folk the favourite targets of #scammers.

Yesterday, a relative called me in a panic about their laptop. This is someone who was a very high-ranking federal police officer, in charge of investigations for a large swath of the country - not someone to be easily taken in by smooth-talkers, at least not in the past.

I went over today and asked him what happened. "Some kind of warning came up" -- i.e. the "oh noes, this is #Microsoft, your #Windows is #corrupted, please call us so we can fix it" one. I asked "Did you do anything they asked you to? Download any programs, or run any commands, or anything like that?"

"No, no, I just phoned them and after they started asking for my address I got suspicious, I didn't do anything they said."

Something which everyone knows, intellectually, but which is frequently difficult to put into practice, because the expectations are reinforced multiple different ways for your entire path to adulthood:

You are allowed to dislike your relatives.

You don't have to be nice to someone who doesn't treat you well, no matter how much other family members push you to ignore their disrespect, neglect, or abuse. Tell them they're full of shit. Tell them you're not going to listen to their crap. Walk away.

You don't have to politely listen to someone saying things that denigrate you, or deny you agency, or "other" you, or gaslight you, no matter who tries to make you remain silent. Argue with them. Or tell them they're wrong, and why, and walk away. Loudly point out to everyone else just how offensive their stated beliefs are, even if others want you to just "let it go so as not to start an argument".

You don't have to provide favours to people who just want to use you. Feel free to say "no" to requests, without arguing or justifying your decision. You just say "No" or "That doesn't work for me", and change the subject or walk away.

This is really difficult to process and put into action. It may take decades to become fully comfortable with it. But it is incredibly freeing once you get there.
