    Lest we forget:

    As historian AJP Taylor wryly remarked, the BBC’s first Director General [Baron John] Reith had "managed to preserve the technical independence of the BBC by suppressing news which the government did not want published. This set a pattern for the future: the vaunted independence of the #BBC was secure so long as it was NOT exercised."

    Not so @BBC5Live, @BBCRadio4, @BBCNews

  2. John Reith talks to Malcolm Muggeridge:
    He explains the thinking behind his decision to instruct BBC broadcasters to speak in the rather artificial manner - which became known as the #BBC accent' - as opposed to their own local dialects.

    'Anything wrong with that?'
    😂

    From Lord #Reith Looks Back, originally broadcast 30 November, 1967.

  3. The #Reith Lectures and the "Nine Things You Should Know About AI" is about as completely unimpressive as R2D2 doing the washing up. The challenge is not "future imagineering" but more trying to figure out what we want to achieve with technology and what is the criteria for success. Endless garment rending about the ethics of beating up cute baby robots doesn't help.

  4. Oh, A @thehertieschool student had a great q, is the goal of the state to make you FEEL safe? Ben focusses on actual crime rates, but IMO we need to think more about what it means to flourish, how much risk we need to take to be a functioning society, and the need to keep that communicated. #Reith I think it's the end now!

    @benwansell @bbc

  5. I still don't have a coherent question, but I do worry that people try to leverage "liberal democracy" and "like minded" somehow too much, which are not necessarily the same, maybe valuing transparency (of authorities, not citizens) and legitimacy is what really matters. #Reith

    @benwansell @bbc

  6. Oh wow, great question – the ongoing Israeli response to terrorism is similar to the American one after 11 September. How did both victimised countries wind up making security moves that are long-term likely to DECREASE their own security. #reith There's some discussion about whether Germany is unique in overreliance on US security; other's also were slacking, but DE needs to ensure its neighbours really trust it and show that it can't fall into tyrany again.

    @benwansell @bbc

  7. @StephanieMoore @benwansell Yes, it will be broadcast on one of the @bbc radio stations (which one?) on 6 December at 10am Berlin. #reith

  8. Weirdly, I have no questions. It was just beautiful and you should listen to it. #Reith

  9. .@benwansell so do we ban #faceRec, or do we risk information falling in the hand of an autocrat? Can we turn them on the power we want to ensure is not abused? Now he's talking about the US military being reliant on a capricious billionaire. Allegedly, Putin misunderstood the level of trust among western powers. It's not that NATO laws can be enforced. Real security comes not from interdependent trade, but from being allowed to let down our guard, which requires "like mindedness." #Reith

  10. I'm not sure how much of @benwansell 's talk to tweet, it's so amazing, I don't want to give things away. He is talking about police abuses, but also the necessity of police, they can't be entirely defunded. He's talking about the unimaginability of being locked down for COVID. He says tyranny is always arbitrary, whenever you set aside the rules some win and some lose. #reith. He also mentioned the hellaciousness of being required to surveil our students as a UK academic. Oh, he's on to AI now.

  11. . @benwansell just brought up Bear Braumoeller, whose amazing book "Only the Dead" I've only just taken back up reading since his death. joanna-bryson.blogspot.com/202 as Ben says we get reminded of our fragility, and this may lead us to not just autocracy, but over self binding [e.g. through AI #surveillance ] #reith

  12. #reith @benwansell is speaking beautifully about what security means, and how it feels if that is violated (he was unexpectedly assaulted in Manchester once.) We are fragile bags of water, yet we think nothing of walking down the street, getting into fast metal cans.

  13. The BBC is running the Reith Lecture tonight in "Europe" (besides the UK) for the first time, and they've chosen to do it at @thehertieschool . Mark @hallerberg starts out talking about 3 of the 4 big things that happened in Berlin on 9 November. I talk about all four here linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:l #reith will be broadcast 6 December at 9am London, 10am Berlin.

  14. Metaphorically hand in hand with Fiona Hill, the listener wandered, yet again, over the flatlands of current events, greened by tufts of well-worn phrases that expressed outrage, moral repugnance, western determination to triumph and suchlike. Nowhere poked even the merest shoot of deeper thought, something that might grow into a sturdy entity that signified the necessary examination of motivation and aspiration and the cold hard limits of achievable ambition. Ms Hill was liberal and unsparing in her use of the platitude; if there were a commonplace she could find, she did. No truism escaped notice. It wasn’t a #BBC #Reith Lecture, but a re-hashed op-ed, one of many written by an acknowledged Russia expert in the Trump years and after. rashmee.com/2022/12/21/what-do

  15. bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001fw1l On now #BBCRadio4+then #BBCSounds: Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, gives second of 2022 #reith #Lectures, discussing #faith and #liberty. In his lecture, he cites Lord Acton, the 19th Century thinker on #freedom who said that #religious freedom is the basis of all #political freedom. Only #bbc does this. Funded by <44p a day per household licence fee. Food for thought+discussion. Because we’re worth it.
