  6. Marsh Wrens prefer to be heard and not seen. With spring approaching it seems every one of these teeny little birds was belting out their hecking loud buzzy clicky calls, though I despaired of actually seeing one.

    But hey, sometimes you get lucky. These photos won't win any awards but with wrens one takes what one can get. Besides, there's a certain artsy quality to them, I think -- Reifel Bird Sanctuary, March 15

  7. Now this is special! What we're looking at is a Mallard / Pintail hybrid. I didn't even know that was a thing, but there you go.

    It's got the soft blue bill of a Pintail, and a mostly Mallardy head and body, though note the wash of brown on top of the head, the softer brown of the chest, smaller eyes, a curl to his white neck ring, and somewhat longer and straighter tail. Neat!
