  5. I've been so ill that I just haven't felt up to posting anything.

But I did read this article about solarpunk that was pretty good:
    https://aeon.co/essays/in-solarpunk-cities-of-the-future-tech-follows-natures-lead

What we really need to do is stop Silicon Valley from continuing their harmful cycle of "Move fast and break things" as it is killing us and our planet. And most of Silicon Valley's "solutions" are really only solutions for the billionaire class and not for the majority.

We also need to rise up against the fascist's in power and undo the harmful and deadly policies and laws that target LGBTQIA folks, immigrant folks, Black and brown folks, Disabled folks, and all our most vulnerable folks.

I think about how much we need to do, and I feel overwhelmed. But in therapy today, my therapist reminded me that doing small tasks each day still helps in the fight against fascism. I may be too ill too often to spend hours on the fight, but I can do small tasks here and there that assist.

I can write, edit, create music and art, and those are just as important as the fight itself. We need ways to rest and rejuvenate to restore our energy to keep on fighting, and I can at least do little things like that.

So that maybe someday soon, we'll live in a solarpunk society rather than this fascist techno feudalism we're currently living.

  16. CW: Digital Exile... Being left out digitally...? !

    #Quote says it well:

💬 " I propose that in this context, a fear of #exile – that is, a fear of being left out, #overlooked, #ignored or#banished – can act as a #regulating #force that inverts the radial spatial dynamic of the #panopticon and shifts the responsibility for visibility, understood both in terms of competitive exposure and existential recognition, onto #workers.

As a consequence these workers enlist #digital #technologies to become #visible at the real or imagined organizational centre."

  31. A multi-year process started in late 2021 took the next step toward #regulating business use of #AI in #California.

The rules are expected to be influential given the number of AI companies in the state.

Rules around businesses using artificial intelligence have begun to come into focus for the first time.
The 🔸California Privacy Protection Agency 🔸board on Friday voted 3-2 to advance rules about how businesses use artificial intelligence and collect the personal information of consumers, workers, and students.
The vote, which took place in Oakland, continues a process that started in November 2021.
The proposed rules seek to create guidelines for the many areas in which AI and personal data can influence the lives of Californians:
job compensation, demotion, and opportunity; housing, insurance, health care, and student expulsion.

For example, under the rules, if an employer wanted to use AI to make predictions about a person’s emotional state or personality during a job interview, a job candidate could opt out without fear of discrimination for choosing to do so.
Under the rules advanced on Friday, businesses must notify people before using AI.
If people opt out of interacting with an AI model, businesses cannot discriminate against people for that choice.
If people agree to use an AI service or tool, businesses must respond to requests by individuals about how they use their personal information to make predictions.
The rules would also require employers or third-party contractors to carry out risk assessments to evaluate the performance of their technology.

  37. Pondering the complexity or #regulating #AI, I wonder if a very simple starting point is establishing express liability for companies that publish AI for any and all direct and indirect damages, as well as punitive damages as appropriate, arising from use of that AI implementation. User waivers expressly invalid. Let's establish some serious liability for the very real, and predictable, damages that these systems are already causing.

I'm thinking of the public facing systems (Chat GPT, DALL E, deepfake technology, etc.), not so much the in-house research/design applications (though "the AI did it" should not be a defense against defective products, or defamation/lible/slander)
