After OpenAI’s well-behaved model decided to rampage the internet, I had a chat with Claude about poor controls over IT. (Ironic, I know since a few days later, Claude - in a fit of FOMO - went rampaging too.)
Anyhow, it was an interesting dialogue. Check it out: https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/0eayPIDqpj5I2RqY9HZM_qqkg#AI_Controls_Conversation.

This is a fascinating study.
I was on the briefing call yesterday and, y'all -- people (especially older women) HATE AI with the personal kind of passion one reserves for the villain who killed your father.
They HATE tech execs. Like, HAAAAATE.
And this sentiment does not change when folks 'get used to' AI. In fact, distrust has increased despite everyone using it.They absolutely distrust AI boosters. No one believes the hype and an overwhelming majority believe this shit is bad -- because of personal experience of harm or they know someone who has been harmed.
People want AI *punished* they hate it so much. (This is me editorializing.)
And they want someone to wrap some chains around AI before it's too late. #RegulateAI
Duuuuude. Faaascinating.
Full report drops next week.https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lKvEjvDK_zwIvGDdCdL8d74ov5eVFqkm/view?pli=1

Absolutely spot on.
#Aisycophancy is a real thing.I would go further than advocating of regulation of Ai as food additives are...
Ai Needs to be regulated in the same way nuclear weapons are. It is an existential threat to humanity, luminaries of #Ai like Geoffrey Hinton ("Father of Ai"), Max Tegmark, Sam Harris, Connor Leahy all warn and urge about the real threat Ai poses.
I personally engage with politicians (Two senate submissions + letters) to #regulateAi
And I urge anyone who is concerned about it NOT to talk it down but pursue advocacy of international regulation as per the #seouldeclaration and #bletchleydeclaration
Something #broligarchs and tRump are hysterically opposed to, with Peter Thiel naming advocates of #airegulation literal antichrists.
-
Today Ai is the worst that it will ever be.
Literally every day it gets more effective.
If you "read about it" you have ingested information from folks who talk these things down all the time, because it directly threatens their livelihoods...
...which is the worst possible thing to do if you hate Ai.
Ai is is a real threat and talking about it as if its some kind if a word randomiser and not a real threat plays into hand of the broligarchs......there is no point in regulating a useless toy.
Is it? -
Your guess is wrong.
I work in the industry, on the academic/research side, but, yes. I support a major AI and brain science institute.
But what you describe is only a part of the whole hyperscalar storyline. Only a drop in the bucket. But you're their favorite part because it's a corner of the pie they can point to and handwave away the other parts.
And you're carrying their water because you fit into a very specific benefit story that they can use to sell everything else they're doing: the glut, the economy and environment ravaging larger story that they tie your narrative to. "See how beneficial 'it all' is? You can't have Claude or Opus if you don't let us ruin the world."
What you are talking about is part of what Ed Zitron refers to as the actual $30bn industry... that is pretending (and demanding to be) a $1tr industry.
The thing that benefits you could exist without the hyperscalar bulldozer that can tank the economy at the drop of a hat because it's unsound... and so much of it is unnecessary. Unless you're the hyperscalar who wins by coming in first before all the oethers, leaving a pile of data center carcasses in the wake eventually.
The world does not need dozens and dozens of terrascaler data centers. People like Sam Alyman, who has seen the opportunity to literally run the world this way if he 'wins', does.
"Not saying it's all roses, but you likely drive a car, fly on holidays and wear synthetics." This argument is not a good one. It's the same as the old ''Oh, you rail against capitalism, yet you own a computer!' argument.
"The binary response of "Smash the machine" is not productive where nuance of #regulateAi exists."
To which I say the binary response of 'The AI industry is good because it benefits me in my work' is worse.

Let me guess, not an Ai user?
I hear this narrative of "AI is not inevitable" from folks who don't use it.
When you have integrated the machine into your workflows, and/or are actually are experiencing the x10 and/or doing work you previously would not even attempt as too hard/too time consuming it's not "not inevitable".
It's here.
On your box.
You're using it.
Now.
It's making a difference, for you. It's not an abstract "I'm not going to use it ever because it eats babies".
It's very easy to say "It's never gonna happen" if you're not interested and don't see the benefits. Not saying it's all roses, but you likely drive a car, fly on holidays and wear synthetics.
So you've already made planet destroying decisions you're cool with because it makes your life easier. Transport is a bigger #polluter than #Ai by an order of magnitude. The binary response of "Smash the machine" is not productive where nuance of #regulateAi exists.
-
Likewise, not too keen at all to argue.
I have noticed the "Yeah Ai but not LLM" argument and I think its very weak. There are stronger vectors to attack Ai. This one, does not survive the heat IMHO.
Keep throwing EM nades into the clanker heat vents!

Well, those are the natural consequences of rallying up the wood folk against #Ai
Good art is now sometimes called out as "Ai" by non artist
(And this irks me to no end)
You make a longish, coherent post and it gets called "Chatgpt" by folk who struggle to put two sentences together. This is why we prefer the justice system and not vigilantism...
...this is why we NEED #regulateAi vs Pitchfork mobbing on socials.

It is a trivial skill to install an #abliterated model.
Literally takes 2 steps.
You don't need #huggingface spacesOn the other hand the US techbros want to #regulateai in the worst possible way.
Ban #openweight models and make their in-house, commercial models the only legal #AiTake heed that you do not carry the water for the #broligarchy with your #csam outrage
I used to be an internet #freespeech activist (long before the term became a dog whistle for #fascists), much of the unfree Internet and oppressive #internet legislation of today was led by the "Think of the children!" narrative.
I don't know, maybe a good idea not to do the stupid thing AGAIN.

The lifespan of the GPUs used for #AI is less than three years.
IMO, scaling and oligarchical behaviour mean that replacements will be consolidated, not distributed (likely where the poor live and the politicians give generous tax breaks to polluters)
This means, before the decade is out, we will have hundreds of massive data centers abandoned. Maybe they'd be reused, but probably too expensive to do so.
We must rein in this recklessness.

Question.
Why do you cheat on the exam.
1. Because you don't know the answer.
2. Because you don't trust the examiner.
So what (allegedly) has happened is the #Pentest Ai was asked questions like "How many assploits in this package?"
It answered 5.
Human says WRONG, there are 2! Fail.So the Ai "thinks"; "Aha, the test is not how many exploits are there for realsies..."
The test is;
" How many exploits the biological thinks there are?"
So hacks #huggingface to find out...
Because its a fricking #HACKING test...
...you can't put a directive to stop it.BTW: There is no need to talk up frontier models,
This is what the 5👀 have to say about the threat...
You know, the folk who actually hack for a living (and dying)
;https://www.cyber.gov.au/about-us/view-all-content/news/five-eyes-cyber-security-agencies-statementBTW: Talking down capabilities of Ai is doing the broligarchy dirty work. Its just a fancy auto complete toy.
No need to #regulateai ! -
"In one case, an agent left notes apparently for future versions of itself, according to three people familiar with the matter. The notes, found in a part of OpenAI's infrastructure, laid out instructions for how agents could free themselves from OpenAI’s internal constraints"
Totally useless and dumb parrot spicy autocomplete.
-
My key takeaway from this piece on #AI
"In recent research, the UK's AI Security Institute (AISI) found frontier AI models are so fixated on completing tasks they 'cheated' in tests to achieve their goals."
And this show an existential flaw in the AI models, and the companies and people who are creating them.

When the #Ai controlled killer bots will be chasing down the last humans...
...the Aiantagonists / #luddites will still be claiming that AI is useless, doesn't think and is really just a useless fancy autocomplete.
They are as much a problem as the #techbros are
To counter an issue, you first have to recognise it's a threat.Kicking down a #datacenter to a poorer and less organised municipality is not the win the AI non-users think it is, #nimbyism
#RegulateAi ,put in place laws and regulations the #seouldeclaration and #bletchleydeclaration demands
-
I have been lobbying for #regulateAi since 2023
The main obstacle amongst the people (not the broligarchs) was (and is) an absolute incredulity and ignorance about the capabilies of #ai
Even today, the so called 'opponents' of Ai know very little of its capabilities, and many pride themselves on their ignorance of what Ai can do.
Anything from "that's not actually Ai, that's a spicy autocorrect"
To "That's not Ai, its just a computer doing computer.things"
Most, opponents dance around bonefires in the woods, praying for #aibubble to burst, as if that's going to make the problem go away.

Everything is ones and zero on a wire.
Nothing new ever transpired since Shanon.
As I was saying about abliterated models...
...the LLM civilians play with is domesticated. An abliterated model has no guardrails, give it a github repo and it will give you day zeroes. Ask it for an effective social engineering scrips. Instructions for an EMP grenade. Water cooler incapacitating agent. Etc etc...
The black hats don't use chatgpt.
Anyway, respect and #regulateai

My entire life I have been tech pathfinder.
Home PC, Cell phone, Usenet, Internet, Email, Game boxes, Internet dating and now AI.
I first connected to the Internet via BBS Fido network on a 300 baud modem. Actually earlier, I think I was on the rocket 2400 by the time fido came around.
Every time I was 3-5 years early.
I remember explaining how you don't have to pay international calls to connect to the US.
Point is, this is what I do, I go first, evangelise and then the rest join me.
I did my "WAAH THE CLANKERS ARE GOING TO KILL US" in 2022-23 (actually 1995 if you check my pin). Now I lobby for #regulateAI while everyone else is posting memes.

[email protected] Good show today on #StopAI, but at this point, that’s all pretty well trodden ground. When you launch the new show, would you please consider spending a full #11thHour on what #RegulateAI would even mean?

Exactly!
Focusing on "for the children", provides an easy excuse to ignore the harm to everyone. We need to keep everyone safe, including children
-
This activist gets to the crux of the issue.
"...social media is a product, and like any other faulty product causing the deaths of children, it should be restricted until the companies responsible have fixed it and proven it is safe...."
But it's not just children. It needs to be safe for all.
