There is something inordinately satisfying about reorganizing kinetic energy into electrochemical storage, instead of shedding it as heat.

Also the flip side of batteries adapted to high-rate charging is that regen is more efficient; hydraulic brakes kick in later. This car's battery (Bolt with "low" charge rate capacity) will sponge 80 kW or 107 HP.

And with EV batteries having amazingly low internal resistance, great round-trip efficiency. :-)

It seems like using a hub set up will add drag as well as extra vehicle mass, which is unfortunate if the brake isn't extending vehicle range.

I wonder if there's a way to mount the turbine shaft to a caliper that can engage against the wheel like a V-style rim brake, so the drag is only applied when a brake lever is engaged.

Usually the benefit of #RegenerativeBraking is that the power flows back into your battery and extends your range, and it is most valuable in that configuration, by far. Still, another benefit is that it doesn't require an ablative material that will need replacing. This is because the kinetic energy is turned into heat and electrical current.

@TonyStark Back in the 1970’s oil embargo, I recall going to an auto convention with my father and seeing a proposed #USPS vehicle with #RegenerativeBraking (ca. 1973). I’m very happy to see this FINALLY coming to fruition. As an aside, I own a #Nissan #Leaf - I can easily say it’s the best car I’ve ever owned (virtually zero maintenance and well over 100k miles and still no need to change the brake pads!).
