  3. #MangroveForests are healing after decades of human destruction

by Matt McGrath and Esme Stallard
    June 4, 2026

"The world's coastal #mangrove forests, which protect millions of people from storms - and soak up vast amounts of planet-warming gases - are staging an unexpected comeback, scientists find.

"For decades these swampy trees had been declining rapidly as they were cleared for fish farms and housing.

"But a new study shows that since 2010 the world has been gaining more mangroves than it has been losing - driven by stronger #LegalProtections and increased #PublicAwareness of their importance, sparked by disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

"The researchers say the key factor though is the remarkable capacity of these forests to #regenerate naturally once humans stop chopping them down.

"Mangroves are one of the world's unsung #environmental heroes.

"Not only do they store up to five times more #CarbonDioxide than land-based forests, but their tangled roots can also slow down waves and protect coastal communities from #StormSurges and #tsunamis.

"These same roots provide a perfect nursery for many species of fish and other #MarineLife - protecting them from predators and providing ample food.

"These benefits, though, have come under serious threat over the past century as the rise of fish farming, agriculture and the expansion of coastal cities and towns have seen mangroves chopped down and rapidly removed.

"From the 1980s to 2010, over 12,000 sq km (4,600 sq miles) of mangroves were cleared or destroyed across #Asia, #Africa and the #Americas - an area the size of Jamaica.

"However, the new study shows a real reversal of that trend, particularly over the last decade. The total net losses - the forest lost and not replaced - since the 1980s have now been reduced to around 849 sq km (328 sq miles)."

  5. Wednesday! Today is going to be a busy day — maybe even more than that. #Quicksand - one of my favorite #90s #posthardcore / #hardcore bands are stepping it up; they’ve got what it takes — I’m looking forward to the album. #Regenerate - good luck! #music #punk m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma9s...

    Ok, I'll play!
    1. I see more Larch than Spruce.
    2. Like it or not, spruce is our best bet for construction timber & the long term #CarbonSequestration this provides; & replaces more #CarbonIntensive building materials.
    3. The real issue isn't Sitka spruce per se, but our #SilviculturalPractice
Ask why not #regenerate &/or replant the vast areas of #Scotland's currently denuded, depleted #BarrenWastelands of sheep & shooting estates? #RightTreeRightPlaceRightReason

  8. 🌱 Natural practices for a healthy garden
Adopt simple, #sustainable and accessible methods to all, to farm without #chemicals.

    🌿 Effective actions
    • Use of home compost
    • Natural fertilizers such as nettle purine or #coffee mark
    • Association of plants to keep pests away

    🌞 A productive and #ecological #vegetable garden
Gentle techniques that promote #biodiversity, #regenerate soil and improve harvest over the seasons.

  10. Been a busy few weeks at work, lots of use or loose award & comp time, all work is managed, a decent boss - so mid-Week skiing at @loveland (the only place in #Colorado I can even remotely afford (!), like supporting small as well)

  12. The beans are in just the right spot. So is the chard near the panels and the green brush is turned into like a lizard nursery. So that's what that is now. I'm not going to touch it again. Just let it grow a little bit. Keep it trimmed at the, top lizard nest. That's what that is.
There's at least five lizards now. It looked like I was down to just one for a second so it's good to see them coming back. It's what I've been doing out here. It has made it more lizard friendly.

  14. “Leave it better than you found it,” is a good motto to take with you on your next journey, near or far. If there's a tourist destination that could use such visitors, perhaps it's Hawaii. A year after the devastating Maui fires, the need to reshape how visitors experience the islands has become more apparent. Fodors.com writer Tykesha Burton took a trip there and came back with these tips for practicing “regenerative travel.”

    #RegenerativeAgriculture #Desert #SaudiDesert

This video may be difficult because it's about
    * a land you don't know
    * a country usualy associated with #BigOil
    * a state that is called a religious dictatorship

But it's also a narrative about life over death, health over stupid.
It's (quote) "The final update from Al Baydha Project Co-founder Neal Spackman, 9 years in. How desertification resulted from the loss of an indigenous land management system, and how the land has changed since all inputs to the project were ceased in 2016."
I specialy like the Neal's epilogue : Humanity NOT being a destructive force, but one of cultivating life and ultimately saving life.

Beware: this clip will cost you 20 min of your life !

  20. I recently listened to an interesting podcast with Ariane König about #regenerating society!

❔What is a #regenerative system? It can recover itself - even inadverse times - and is resilient.

    Some interesting things:
🌱 Reducing harm is no longer enough. We need to #regenerate culture and ecosystems.
🤑 The #problem is the goal of economic profits/ increase.
👫 We need to get more active #locally.
🕸️ Local initiatives should be: Place-based, perennialised, #networked.

  24. #Deer #antlers, which are bone, #regenerate each year and can grow at a rate of up to 2.75 cm/day!

Qin et al (2023) studied this and found that the #molecular machinery behind this phenomenon is also found in other #mammals (like #mice), but not in the non-mammals that they tested.

This may have #clinical implications for developing new #bone #growth #research and #therapies (with caveats, of course).

  26. CW: Musing about the future…

Soon internet is going to be way more regulated and restricted. The global supply chain may collapse. Energy, water, food, clothing, housing will only get more expensive.

Pseudonymity (like I rely on) will mostly be a thing of the past for individuals.

Hopefully we can keep #usenet alive and community run.

    Consider getting your #AmateurRadio licenses.

Find like minded people in your local community and establish mutual aid groups?

Maybe together set up a community wide mesh network to keep everyone informed and have communication available should something happen to the non-community run ones?

Learn to mend clothes. Learn to make clothes.

Learn gardening. Collect rainwater. Compost. Grow food. Keep chickens. Keep bees. Learn to cook and preserve. Stock up.

    Learn to repair and salvage.
Learn to make tools. Learn to design and write programs. Learn electronics.

Establish in law and in code
    the #RightToRepair
    the #RightToAmend
    the #RightToDIY
    the #RightToSalvage
the right to own the means
the right to inform and teach others.

“The greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone. Hence the futility of revolutionaries who have no gardens, who depend on the very system they attack, and who produce words and bullets, not food and shelter.”

  27. #Planaria are freshwater #flatworms that have become a key model for studying #regeneration and #stem #cells, as they can regenerate any part of the body, even the head. But how does the animal know what part of its body is missing and what kind of tissue it needs to #regenerate?
