News from the @DORAssessment page:
Brief report about a project aimed to test the effectiveness of multimedia formats for educating researchers about scholarly metrics
https://sfdora.org/2025/04/07/introducing-two-educational-videos-on-the-h-index-the-pedagogical-potential-of-multimedia-for-teaching-about-scholarly-metrics/The team used multiple strategies to develop content and format of the videos. I found it an interesting brief read for the planning of educational resources.

It fascinated me during my time in #REF2021 how little attention this receives:
"England allocates about £2bn each year to [REF-based] funding – you may wish to compare this to £44bn of sector income (from all sources, public and private) each year, or to the £21bn higher education providers spend on employing staff. "
https://wonkhe.com/wonk-corner/do-you-really-have-to-sign-up-to-a-political-agenda-to-get-research-funding/Sure, it is about accountability.
It is about the ranking.
And everything else. But in the current crisis, this seems sobering to me.

My #OA book (from 2022) has now passed 10,000 downloads and has already been cited in a wide variety of contexts (many of them far outside my core discipline).
Clear evidence of the benefits of #openaccess to humanities publishing - and yet I've just learned that #REF2029 has backed away from imposing an #openaccess mandate on books and other long-form research outputs. Until next time, they say.

Michael Upshall critiques the commentary “Open excess: remove open access burden from REF”: https://www.consultmu.co.uk/is-open-access-open-excess/
This jumped out at me:
"The Oxford team claim it costs their university £20M to check 15,000 articles and other outputs [for OA status] – a cost of £1,333 to process each article."If that's true, I never again want to hear research managers complain about high publishing costs. Journals are massively efficient by comparison!

#OpenAccess isn’t mainly about compliance; it enhances research quality & impact. The #REF2029 OA policy can enable the greater open research @UniofOxford desires, says @sallyrumsey.

"Is it so outrageous, when awarding over a billion pounds of public funding, to insist that a mere 1.7% of it is spent to ensure the public can see the results? "
"...the REF awards public money. Denying any section of the public access to the outputs of that work is asking for funding without accountability."
wow, this is a superb essay from Stephen Curry, Dorothy Bishop and Martin Paul Eve

cOAlition S urges for a stronger #OpenAccess policy for #REF2029, with:
🔓 No embargoes on journal articles & proceedings
📘 Open licenses & deposits in repositories
✅ Recognizing peer-reviewed preprints
⬇️ 12-month max embargo for long-forms -
Whatever form #REF2029 OA policy takes, we hope it becomes a prompt for institutions to creatively explore local approaches to delivering a fairer, more #sustainable future for scholarly publishing 💡

TL:DR a summary of our initial thoughts on #REF2029 #OA policy 🤔🧵
We welcome the principle of #OpenAccess by default that the policy proposes 👍
It's an opportunity for the #HE sector to embrace more ethical, community-led forms of publishing in research & teaching
But action needs to be taken to encourage #OpenResearch cultures✊
